Mickey Lamp Post?

I have a couple questions on the Mickey Lamp Post, I am finally getting mine, but I need to find out about the base, for I can not decide.
What type of base do you have on yours or do your recommend? Also, how do you transport it with out it breaking?

For our base, I used a 5 gal bucket from Home Depot and rigged some PVC pipe to create a holder for the post. For the regular 3" post (the metal one you use in the yard) you would use a 3" PVC pipe. It creates a snug fit. Cut the lid and back (for the cord to run through) and silicone it up. Fill it with 1 bag of paver sand for weight.

To transport it, I ussualy put the base in the bed of the truck and the post/head in the basement storage. I wrap it in my tire covers to prevent scratches and soften any blows it may take. Had it for 2 years now and no breakage yet.

The base is painted red now. We are adding the yellow buttons to look like Mickeys pants. I also use a green bulb.......

You have no problem taking the post out of the bucket when packing up? It goes in and out of the PVC pretty easy?

My lamp isn't as tall as some - maybe 4 feet. I used a PVC flange and then spray painted it to match the PVC pipe used for the pole. Since it doesn't have a heavy base, I lay it down on the bed while in transit.

I use a 5 gal bucket as well. However I bolted and sealed (silicone) a pipe cap inside the bottom for the post to slide into. I also cut a hole in the lid. I just fill the bucket with water when we get there. My cord comes out of the pole right above the lid.

Don't have to carry any extra weight that way.

I just used an old flower pot that was in the shed. I used that Fusion spray paint and did a coat of yellow, taped off 2 ovals, then sprayed 2 coats of red. The post is PVC painted with Fusion black.

Since we had a popup, it all had to come apart fairly easily. We stick the post into the pot when we get there and fill it with sand from the site. When we're done, we dump the sand back into the pad.

The cord comes out the bottom where the drain hole is.

For our base, my husband used a (very heavy) decorative patio umbrella base (like you would use under a patio table).

When we're traveling, the base sits by the inside of our camper door and the pole with Mickey's head attached rides resting on the top of our dining room table, next to the wall. (his head hangs over the booth into the space of the living room couch)

I wasn't so sure about transporting him that way (but was a good wife and kept my mouth shut ) ... and he's safely ridden from FL to Canada, and everywhere in between, for 5+ years now with no incidents.

We have a TT -- when we upgrade to a 5th-wheel, Mickey might have to make other traveling arrangements - like the underneath storage.

That pot had been sitting in the garage for maybe 2 years? Ever since DD won it at a gardening workshop as a door prize. I figured using it for something was better than just letting it sit

Someone on here made a Minnie and Mickey pair of light posts that are adorable!

The post fits snugly but not overly snug. It slides in/out easily for storage.

I used a 12" for the main head and 8" for the ears. It looks more propotionate that way, IMHO.

We use a heavy umbrella stand base which comes off and sits just inside our door. Also our Mickey attached to the post rides on our bed, cushioned between our pillows! Rides great so far!

You can see how I did mine in THIS ALBUM and since it breaks down I just store it in the back bedroom in some bags I made from an old blanket. Not so much to protect the lamp post, but to prevent any damage to the inside of the trailer.

Since ours took a not so graceful "header" onto the pavement at our site at FW last Xmas I have added some rope supports and springs along with some of the 12" lumber spikes you can get from Lowes/HD so I can have my Mickey Lamp Post and not suffer from only having a "MICKEY EAR" since the header broke one ear and the head and only left me with one "EAR" to use.

I wish I had taken a pic of just my "EAR" lamp post, but didn't.

Ditto . . . use an umbrella stand. I have one and I have also made several for friends. I have used a metal umbrella stand on all of them. They have been out through some wild storms and never upset yet! No guy wires, stakes or nails are needed!

The base weighs about 20 pounds and is much easier to stow away than a big pail.

The stand can be bought for about $20.00 at Walmart or Target. The post on the stand will have a nut welded to it where a retaining bolt holds the umbrella mast in place. All you need is a hammer and chisel to remove the nut and then your lamp post slides right over top. I drilled a few holes and hold it together with long bolts and wingnuts.

We also use a 5 gal. bucket that we fill at the campsite. Our Mickey head comes off and lies safe on the trailer floor. The post and bucket travel in the bed of the truck. My DH cut a square toilet flange to fit the circle of the bucket. He also put a light sensor on the pole so we don't have to turn it off and on.
