Mexico-Suggestions?

Good evening fellow DVC members,

Thinking about taking a family vacation to Mexico, any recommendations on the resorts we can use our points at? Your help is always appreciated.

We visited the Royal Caribbean resort in Cancun earlier this year using our DVC points. We had a great time there and are planning a return trip next year. Any of the Royal resorts (Royal Caribbean, Royal Islander, Royal Mayan-oldest, Royal Sands - newest) available to DVC members would be a good choice. At the resorts, guests can arrange tours with Thomas More Travel which has many trips available to the ruins, neighboring islands (Cozumel, Isla de Mujeres) or water parks. All of the Royal resorts are on the Caribbean which is really spectacular. Also, while staying at the Royals, they have free rental available of snorkeling equipment, golf clubs, bikes, games, etc. I'd be glad to give you any other specifics if you are interested in these resorts.

The Royals sans VCI in Cancun and Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta are the ones I'd recommend. I don't know that much about Cabo but it appears none there are up to DVC standards.

Our friends stayed at the Royal Sands in Cancun in Dec 04 and loved it. No washer and dryer in the room though. They are Marriot timeshare owners and traded through II for this resort. They said it was not quite as nice as the Marriots they have stayed in, but still really nice. Hope that helps a little!

Does anyone know what the season would be considered for the Royal Resorts in Cancun for January or February? Low, Mid, or High.

Anyone ever been there in June? We typically vacation in June and might like to celebrate our 20th anniversary there in a few years? Anyone think a trade at that time of the year is doable?

Is Cancun too much of a "party" atmosphere for kids? My kids are not toddlers, but still young enough that I don't want them in the middle of a "college kids gone wild" video.

We are going to the Royal Sands in July! We were on a waiting list for about a month before they called and told us. I expect it will be insanely hot, but as Floridians we can take it!

The Royals have a laundry room where they charge you by the load. It's usually only open till around 5 pm and I don't think it was open on weekends.

Definitely high season just like the Caribbean.

Went in early July 2000 and it was hot but workable. We stayed at the older Royal (VCI) which is nice but not up to DVC standards. This was for our 20th Anniversary. VCI will likely be gone by then as it ends in 2007.

For spring break it's a problem, but I don't think so the rest of the time as long as you stay out of the bars.

We own 3 weeks at the Royal Sands in Cancun, (24, 25 & 26). We have been vacationing there for 8 years since our youngest was just under 2. It is a wonderful family resort, very safe with lots for the kids to do.

There is a laundry room open, Monday - Saturday, 7am - 9pm. It costs about $3 per load to wash and dry, with a nice tip, Olivia will even fold everything for you.

It is usuall in the 90's in June, but we don't seem to notice it as we are usually in the pool or on the beach all day long.

My father owns in Fairfield and gave us a trip to Mazatlan using his points. We stayed in the El Cid Towers, which was a hotel/resort complex - partnered with Fairfield. One of the associated resorts was the vacation home resort Marina El Cid. It is about a mile north of the main complex and thus a little bit out of the major beach and tourist desinations. So it has it's own private feel but there is a resort shuttle as well as taxis that provide very good access everywhere else. We did a sales-pitch tour of Marina El Cid and thought it was very nice! Beautiful rooms, nice restaurant, private beach (nachos, margaritas and Corona's !!!) If we go back to Mazatlan, this is where we will stay.

We enjoyed Mazatlan very much, but I don't think it is where I would like to take the kid's. We're not real big cosmopolitan traveler's, a bit weary in foreign lands. But the Federales that pulled over our taxi on our way back to the airport kind of made us think the kid's were much better off at Disneyland with the Grandparent's. DW didn't like having the drawn and cocked .45 just outside her window while the driver and officer were arguing. Guess this could happen anywhere in Mexico though.
