Mexican fiesta!!!

Hi everyone!! My husband & I love Mexican & want to know which one to pick. I love the ambiance of the San Angel but have seen nothing but bad reviews on it. Does anyone like it? Well either way, what is the best place to get Mex?? I personally like a taco salads. My husband likes chimmy wha-cha-ma-call 'ems?? So what do u think? What should we try?



Oh & if there is a dish that stands out fill me in! Thanx!! =)

San Angel Inn use to have really great Mexican food. They use to feature a good mix of familiar Mexican dishes such as nachos and tacos as well as more non-traditional dishes, but now they only serve things like Mahi Mahi over rice and Beef Tips. They still have a taco salad but that's about it as far as what you might find at a typical Mexican restaurant. Last time I was there, I walked out because nothing on the menu appealed to me. When they opened La Hacienda de San Angel, I had high hopes the menu would feature some of the more familiar items like tacos, enchiladas, etc....but it was just more flank steak, tilapia, Roasted pork loin, etc.

Believe me, I'm not looking for Taco Bell, I appreciate that they are servings Mexican food for a more "distinguished" palate. I know there is more to Mexican cuisine than just tacos, but I miss the mix of traditional and non-traditional dishes on the menu.

I don't know if I really answered your question, but at least you have an idea of the type of food they serve at each place.

If you are looking for tacos, empanadas, or nachos there is always La Cantina de San Angel but it's counter service.

You aren't going to find Don Pablos style Mexican at either of Disney's Mexican table service, and I think that's the reason for some of the poor reviews. If you walk in looking for the familiar taco salad, chimichanga, enchilada, taco type dishes you'll be disappointed.

The best place to start is to take a look at the menus for both and see if either appeals to you. San Angel's lunch menu is probably the closest you'll find to typical American Mexican restaurant fare.

If TexMex style food is what you're after, you'd do better at a restaurant in your hometown the night before you leave. I have eaten at San Angel (a long time ago) and to me it was worth it for the atmosphere. The food however was "meh" at best. I can't get anyone in my house to return there.
Maybe the rennovated CS place by the water is better now.

We ate at San Angel Inn in October and thought it was actually pretty good & didn't deserve the bad reviews. We each had an order of the beef filet w/ the peppers & it was spicy, but we loved it.

Also, we used to live in TX, so we do know what TexMex vs. Mexican food is like. I would say that San Angel is more Mexican than tex mex for sure.

Definitely more "Mex" and no "Tex" -- which is fine by me. I think they make a fantastic mole poblano. I never eat any other dish there, but I always enjoy the heck out of my meals and the ambiance.

I do not think you should be scared off by reviews here of the San Angel Inn. There are good reviews also. However, it is not the style of Mexican food that many Americans are used to (tacos, nachos, chimichangas, burritos, etc). None of the Mexican restaurants in Epcot serve this, not even the counter service. They have tacos, but it's soft tortillas and grilled meat, when many are looking for crisp corn tortillas and ground beef.

I'm still not sure about any of this. I'm down to try new mex. But u'd think being so close to Mexico there would be some awesome choices! When I think of Mex I def don't think of a big chunk of beef. Not for me.

My experience was that the opening of La Hacienda caused the Inn to up their game - my meal there last September, just a few days after La Hacienda opened, was the best I have ever had there.

So I suspect the old bad reviews aren't indicative of how it is now.

And if you decide to try La Hacienda instead - well, I absolutely loved my one meal there. Besides very good food, the service was wonderful, and very personal.

We have been to SAI a few times and the food is always great, been to La Hacienda once and it was terrible

we did margaritas, salsa, chips, and crab tostada appetizers for lunch at la cava. the tequilla bar inside the mexican pavillion. the drinks were most certainly not watered down and the tapas type foods were really good. that's been the best place we've eaten mexican food at wdw. i've eaten at san angel inn, the quick service place in epcot, and paridiso. paridiso was hit or miss depending on what was ordered for us. i don't like the other two if that's any help for making a comparison.

It is not chain-restaurant tex-mex nor is it any version of 'Merican Mexican. You will not get tacos, burritos, etc. like Taco Bell!

If you like it "hot", ask your waiter for suggestions at either restaurant...they are very good at steering patrons to the right dishes (I'm a wimp, need it very mild. Hubby prefers the hotter stuff.)

Both places have nice ambiance, though the tables are too close together at both (but that's the story at every Disney restaurant...even the signature places are ridiculously close together.)

not soccermom, but just an FYI...Disney World, in Orlando, Fl is nowhere close to Mexico (there's a very large Gulf out there) Disney World is actually more than 1000 miles away from the closest point of Mexico. NOT close by most people's standards.

Maybe you're thinking of Disneyland? That's just over 100 miles from Mexico.

But there is no San Angel Inn or La Hacienda there...these restaurants are only at Epcot in Florida.
