Hello to all. Hope everyone's little ones (and you all too) are all feeling better soon. I can't believe that little Erik is not a newborn anymore.
Today is the first day in 3 1/2 months that I don't have to do anything!
I have been reading this thread and have said more than a few prayers for my friends here. I even started a post a week ago - but somehow lost it.
As you know I got my father moved into the retirement home in late July. I've been spending quite a bit of time with him and even eating meals with him several times a week so he would not feel abandoned. The food is actually good - not New Orleans good - but very good. They have a "chef" not just a cook and all of the meals are prepared from scratch on site. No frozen and reheated institutional food. The homemade rolls are to die for. Dad loves the food and hasn't missed one meal (3x day) yet.
When I eat with Dad I've been trying to have us sit with different people so he can meet more of the other residents. He is beginning to interface with others. I am so glad that he is having more social interaction than just sitting home watching TV. This motivates him to get dressed, comb his hair, etc.
My sister and I drove to New Orleans last week so I could clean out the frig and get things off the balcony in case of a hurricane (which we are NOT going to have). We arrived just in time for 8/29 of all days. My sister and I have not been able to be out of town at the same time (because of Dad) for a long, long time.
Cindy worked at the original Whole Foods back in the 80s. She got to go to a party some friends were having (Summer Mardi Gras) and saw old friends she had not seen in 25 years.
I may have mentioned that she has lost 100 pounds. Under a plan through the medical school that involved pre-packaged meals. She was a pretty strict vegetarian for decades before that - but now has added shrimp back into her diet. Boy did we have some good meals! She loved being able to eat shrimp again! And what better place than nola.
I am now in Orlando! But it's going to involve work. I am the treasurer for a national organization that is having its biennial meeting starting tomorrow. We will be having elections of new officers - boy do these women campaign! It's like they are running for governor or something. Lots of parties - and I will get to see many friends from around the country.
My term is up in January, but I am not running for national office as I was elected president of the Arkansas federation in April. Holding the two offices and dealing with my dad has been hard.
My brother came into town in late August. He immediately put the house on the market (he owns it) - so I've been trying to clear out some of the stuff that I have plus I've been looking for a place to move into.
I don't think I have to worry about moving right away as he has way over priced the house - by at least $50,000. He lives in California and does not understand Arkansas housing prices.
Plus I have a funny but very embarrassing tale about the house sale. I was out with the realtor looking at a condo when we got a call that an agent (from a very large agency) wanted to preview the house immediately, but the dogs needed to be removed first .
I rushed back home grabbed the leashes and took a trip to the drive-thru Starbucks. When I got home I found that the dogs had decided to "mark" two places in my absence which I did not see (way back room that is usually closed off). So I can only imagine the review this agent have her firm when she got back!
Plus the garage is really a mess. It has been for years as my dad allowed my late uncle to put a bunch of stuff there years ago plus it has all of my dad's tools. (okay - and a bunch of my stuff too). I've taken countless loads of stuff to Goodwill and community garage sales. I had it in pretty good shape until I had the movers (for Dad's furn to his new place) unload the attic. They brought it all down, but just put it any old place. Some of that stuff in the attic was left by previous owners - it truly looks like a junk yard.
The realtor and I both thought we should wait until the house was cleaned out more before listing it. But my brother was adamant that it be listed that very day when he was here. First impressions with realtors are very important, and it looks like a mess right now. We moved a good bit of furniture to Dad's new place and have been using the back room (where the dogs went) as a place to store stuff that will go into an estate sale.
I am at Old Key West all by myself in a 2 BR. It feels really weird to have all of this room for ONE person - but several others are arriving tomorrow. I did not want to have to move my stuff again - took SIX trips from the car to unload everything (including groceries that I bought before checking in). Plus my DVC points were going to expire 10/1 anyway.
I'm going to stay a few days after the conference is over - and yes I am moving out of this 2BR into a smaller place over at SSR.
The people flying in tomorrow have never been to Orlando. Tried to convince them to come earlier or stay later to really see Disney - but they seem to think an afternoon or a day will be enough.
One of the women lives in very rural Arkansas and has never been on a plane. Our organization collected money to bring a member who has never been to convention and who probably would never be able to afford it. It's a good feeling to help someone like that who works so hard.
Sorry this is so long but I had a lot of catching up to do.
