Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 03/2009

Hello to all. Hope everyone's little ones (and you all too) are all feeling better soon. I can't believe that little Erik is not a newborn anymore.

Today is the first day in 3 1/2 months that I don't have to do anything!

I have been reading this thread and have said more than a few prayers for my friends here. I even started a post a week ago - but somehow lost it.

As you know I got my father moved into the retirement home in late July. I've been spending quite a bit of time with him and even eating meals with him several times a week so he would not feel abandoned. The food is actually good - not New Orleans good - but very good. They have a "chef" not just a cook and all of the meals are prepared from scratch on site. No frozen and reheated institutional food. The homemade rolls are to die for. Dad loves the food and hasn't missed one meal (3x day) yet.

When I eat with Dad I've been trying to have us sit with different people so he can meet more of the other residents. He is beginning to interface with others. I am so glad that he is having more social interaction than just sitting home watching TV. This motivates him to get dressed, comb his hair, etc.

My sister and I drove to New Orleans last week so I could clean out the frig and get things off the balcony in case of a hurricane (which we are NOT going to have). We arrived just in time for 8/29 of all days. My sister and I have not been able to be out of town at the same time (because of Dad) for a long, long time.

Cindy worked at the original Whole Foods back in the 80s. She got to go to a party some friends were having (Summer Mardi Gras) and saw old friends she had not seen in 25 years.

I may have mentioned that she has lost 100 pounds. Under a plan through the medical school that involved pre-packaged meals. She was a pretty strict vegetarian for decades before that - but now has added shrimp back into her diet. Boy did we have some good meals! She loved being able to eat shrimp again! And what better place than nola.

I am now in Orlando! But it's going to involve work. I am the treasurer for a national organization that is having its biennial meeting starting tomorrow. We will be having elections of new officers - boy do these women campaign! It's like they are running for governor or something. Lots of parties - and I will get to see many friends from around the country.

My term is up in January, but I am not running for national office as I was elected president of the Arkansas federation in April. Holding the two offices and dealing with my dad has been hard.

My brother came into town in late August. He immediately put the house on the market (he owns it) - so I've been trying to clear out some of the stuff that I have plus I've been looking for a place to move into.

I don't think I have to worry about moving right away as he has way over priced the house - by at least $50,000. He lives in California and does not understand Arkansas housing prices.

Plus I have a funny but very embarrassing tale about the house sale. I was out with the realtor looking at a condo when we got a call that an agent (from a very large agency) wanted to preview the house immediately, but the dogs needed to be removed first .

I rushed back home grabbed the leashes and took a trip to the drive-thru Starbucks. When I got home I found that the dogs had decided to "mark" two places in my absence which I did not see (way back room that is usually closed off). So I can only imagine the review this agent have her firm when she got back!

Plus the garage is really a mess. It has been for years as my dad allowed my late uncle to put a bunch of stuff there years ago plus it has all of my dad's tools. (okay - and a bunch of my stuff too). I've taken countless loads of stuff to Goodwill and community garage sales. I had it in pretty good shape until I had the movers (for Dad's furn to his new place) unload the attic. They brought it all down, but just put it any old place. Some of that stuff in the attic was left by previous owners - it truly looks like a junk yard.

The realtor and I both thought we should wait until the house was cleaned out more before listing it. But my brother was adamant that it be listed that very day when he was here. First impressions with realtors are very important, and it looks like a mess right now. We moved a good bit of furniture to Dad's new place and have been using the back room (where the dogs went) as a place to store stuff that will go into an estate sale.

I am at Old Key West all by myself in a 2 BR. It feels really weird to have all of this room for ONE person - but several others are arriving tomorrow. I did not want to have to move my stuff again - took SIX trips from the car to unload everything (including groceries that I bought before checking in). Plus my DVC points were going to expire 10/1 anyway.

I'm going to stay a few days after the conference is over - and yes I am moving out of this 2BR into a smaller place over at SSR.

The people flying in tomorrow have never been to Orlando. Tried to convince them to come earlier or stay later to really see Disney - but they seem to think an afternoon or a day will be enough.:) One of the women lives in very rural Arkansas and has never been on a plane. Our organization collected money to bring a member who has never been to convention and who probably would never be able to afford it. It's a good feeling to help someone like that who works so hard.

Sorry this is so long but I had a lot of catching up to do.

Sheryl- Alexis is more beautiful in person! Even though we didn't get to see her awake, she was angelic sleeping soundly. I look forward to more video of her dancing and singing in the future! Chris was very sweet too! My heart goes out to her. Had NO plans to actually meet them, b/c we planned to be quiet about it. The goodies were from all of us NOLA gals.

Then I went to my moms house to feed the cats(ugh, long story), which I am doing 3-4 times this week on top of the other things that are starting this week with schooling and finishing up packing! I am at the point that I am not sure I care if we are done packing- lets just GO!

Lori

Hey Y'all, I'm sorry she wasn't awake for y'all to meet her! Unfortunately she woke around 11:00 & starting crying in pain again. . Alexis had a rough night & morning. She complained of pain all night & they ended up having to give her morphine again. The dr came in this morning & ordered a suppository, she hasn't gotten that yet. She is going to be so mad. They needed to take blood & I guess she is doing better because it took the the dr., 2 nurses & Chris to hold her down to get the blood! If the blood work looks okay & the supp. works they may let her go today. We'll see.

The Child Life specialist popped her head into Alexis' room & told her the New Orleans Saints will be in the Child Life Room this morning! Chris said she got a big smile across her face & said "Wait til I tell Uncle Josh! He is going to be so jealous!" I've got news for her, Nana's jealous too!

I'm heading over there now. A big thanks to all of you for the gift! That was way too sweet! Y'all are just the best friends! I feel so blessed to have found y'all.
Chris thought you were all very sweet too, she said none of you seemed like ax murderers at all! She couldn't believe that you all went to so much trouble for her girl. She said to tell you she appreciates it from the bottome of her heart!!! :grouphug:

Sheryl I am SO sorry she is going through all of this. I had a similar situation when my gallbladder was removed. Must be even worse for a child.

Plus they cut an artery in my neck, and I could have bled to death in the six hours it took to get someone to come fix it with emergency surgery in my room. Who expects to get their neck slashed when having a gallbladder out? And it was a doctor (not an ax murderer) who did it.:)

Hi Tricia, thanks for the prayers!!! You're in mine too as is your dad. Wow, great weight loss for your sister!!! Congratulate her for me.

Your brother living in Cali has no idea what houses sell for here. He really should have listened to you. When you watch HGTV and see what houses sell for there:scared1:. I agree that you won't have to move for awhile.

Poor little sugar! I hope she gets to go home today AFTER seeing the Saints.

Thank-you. The only disappointment was nothing available for the Sci Fi. That's Rie's favorite but I'll make triple sure we get it for April.
I've had very good results with getting in SciFi without advanced ADR if I go sort of mid-afternoon. That might not mesh with your plans though but might be worth a try. It's one of my favorites too.

A lot of people say the food isn't good, but I always get a burger, and they are pretty good. I just love the atmosphere and the "movies" - maybe because I am old enough to even remember some of them.

Thanks for the haunted tree.

Sheryl, I have been thinking about Alexis and your family a lot. I hope the little angel/diva gets some relief soon:hug:

Tricia, it is so nice to hear from you. I'll bet you had a BIG gasp when you saw the "spots" the dogs left. I hope your time is Orlando is great!:goodvibes

I got an early Christmas present today: outdoor furniture. It is from the "Disney Resort" Animal Kingdom Lodge collection. It is so pretty, I hate to put it outside. :lmao:

I was thinking about trying a walk-in. Thanks for posting about your success!
Rie loves the burgers too. My favorite is the shrimp penne.

You're very welcome for the haunted tree!

Any pictures of the furniture? It sounds great!!!

Oh, don't get me started on my brother!

He is incredibly wealthy - has two homes (next to each other) on the beach in Malibu (next door neighbors are Dick Clark and Diana Ross) plus an estate in Australia and two homes in Amsterdam.

But he refuses to contribute a PENNY to our dad. He bought the house when Mother was still alive. We grew up very, very poor and his excuse is "Dad never did anything for him". Well Dad did everything he could - he didn't leave us. We all got a college education even if it was with working, loans and scholarships.

I've been supporting Dad totally plus paying for all the maintenance on Doug's house for almost 10 years (including upgrading the bathrooms and replacing the flooring). Dad's income from SS and small pension ($140 quarterly!) doesn't come close to paying for his new place.

Can you tell that I really don't like my brother? I really don't mean to sound bitter. He is actually a very unhappy person in spite of his wealth.

I am comfortable but not "wealthy". I was unfortunate to lose everything in the Houston bust in the 80s, but fortunate to sell a condo in the San Francisco area when I moved back to Little Rock. But my father will be taken care of - even if I have to postpone Disney trips!

Julie, I missed your earlier post about Rie. Have ya'll tried cranberry juice? I hope she feels better.

I will take some pictures of the furniture in a little while. There's some nice pictures of it on this website: www.agio-usa.com/furniture

Tricia, your brother does sound very bitter. God bless you for taking care of your dad.

When I go to pick up her meds in a bit, I'll get some cranberry juice too. Thanks!!!

 for A, Rie, and arminnie

Flora - that sounds awesome, I'd like to see pics too

Guys, if you have time, can you do me a favor and go vote on my poll?
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2278772
I'm really torn about what to do. :guilty:

Rie says thanks for the hug! I voted in your poll.

Tricia - I've missed you!!!!!!! I'm so happy that your Dad is settling in and doing well.:goodvibes Your brother.....:headache: to put it mildly. Enjoy your time in WDW!!:cool1:

Sheryl - Hoping Alexis was released today!

Mary - Can't wait to see the pics!

Jaime - I voted in your poll, good luck with your decision.

Julie - How is Rie feeling this afternoon? The cranberry juice works wonders.

Hey y'all, Still at the hospital. Doesn't look like she is going to get out, her w. blood cell count is still too high. She needs more antibiotics & her vein is inflammed, so they'll have to put another one in the other hand. :sad1:

She likes her gifts a lot, she actually smiled over the build a bear. Not much is getting her to smile right now.

Julie,I hope Rie starts to feel better soon!

Tricia, I'm glad your Dad is doing well.

Mary, That is too pretty to put outside!

ps. She might be on the news with the Saints tonight. Fox 8 we think.

She's lying down. Tim will pick up some juice for her. Walgreens didn't have any and then Rie started feeling unwell, so we came home.

 I hope Alexis gets out soon. Do they know where she's still having infection or is the blood count high because of the surgery?

Thank-you! The doctor told us today that it was probably a brewing bladder infection that has kept Rie sick for the last month. They called it a massive infection. :scared1:
At least we know why she's been unable to get well. From now on, if she gets sick, I'm asking them to do a urinalysis. She used to get them when she was in 1st, 2nd,4rd grade and hasn't had one since.

Awe poor Rie! I absolutely HATE those dang things. :headache:

Seriously, Ms. Alexis must be so uncomfortable and unhappy. I hope the gifts help her escape the pain for a while. Wow the Saints!

Well the doctor told us today that Aly's lab results indicated she did indeed have the H1N1 virus. Her ear is much better but he wants us to continue with the drops for the rest of the week.

Man now Kodi is having issues! My lovely DH :rolleyes1 has been giving her table food so Sunday he gave her sausage and ever since Sunday night she has been having loose poop or diarhea. I have been giving her pedialyte and water mixed and broiled rice and chicken. Now how in the heck will I get her back to eating table food.:confused3

I know I hate them too!

Wow, I'm glad Aly did ok with the flu!!!

Poor Kodi!!

Guess what? I was just checking the Disney site to see if a deluxe room had become available for an AP discount at the WL for our dates. It didn't BUT when I looked at the total, it was $816.00 cheaper than the price I was quoted yesterday. So, I hurried and called Disney and the CM I spoke to said, " Yes, the quote today is correct!" :yay::yay::yay:

That almost covers 3 of the 4 plane tickets!!!

Julie - I suffer with UTI's a lot and know how horrid they are. Hugs for Rie.

Serena - I'm glad Aly came out OK with the flu, it's not easy watching your kid feel so bad.....and the dog as well. I was told by my vet years ago that pork products are really bad for them. Sammie gets some table food but not too much. If it were up to me she'd get none but DH just loves to sneak her stuff.:rolleyes1

Sheryl - Hugs to all of you.:grouphug: The poor child has been through so much already.:sad1:

Hey all,

Julie, I am glad the it seems Rie is finally figured out. I hope that she is back to feeling better in no time. Bladder infections stink so please tell Rie my prayers for a speedy recovery is with her.

Sheryl, Sorry Alexis couldn't get out today either. I hope that her night tonight is better and tomorrow is a better day for her, but lucky her to meet a Saint.

Mary, LOVE your new furniture.. just beautiful.
