Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 03/2009

No, we weren't in Prairieville for that DN's fair(she is DN5 now). I know- how can we keep up!! I have 10 nieces and nephews-2 of them nephews, the rest are girls!!

This is Gabbi(DN6) and her little bro, Gavin(DN5.5mos). Her fair was in River Ridge. It was an old fashiony fair- no rides, just games and food and raffles and kids entertaining.

The ones in Prairieville are DN5 and DN9mos(the one whose mom had a ruptured unterus during childbirth)-both girls. This is the brother and DN whom you know of. My brother who is anti-pictures online anywhere at any time due to his job status-juvenile detective and PT online predator catcher with the FBI.

Like I expect you to follow my family, but just so you know....

He is sleeping soundly for the 2nd time today. He woke up 2x last night!!!
It makes me feel really lucky that both my girls were sleeping through the night by 6 weeks old(like 11pm to 6am, but we helped that happen, I wasn't a total baby led schedule kinda new mom). Mom and dad(my Dsis and BIL) are on thier way home from Panama City Beach as I type.

It has been fun and I really hope to do this again. It sorta made me think about how much we'll enjoy grandparenthood.

Pray for my Dh , as I usually ask, esp. today. He is going NUTTY today. God is surely testing our patience as we thought we'd know already about the probable job in the works-not just the little bit of info we got last Thursday. It seems to be like this for us always-so maybe we need to learn patience huh!???! It is looking like home, Houston, or Orlando. You know where we prefer(home or Orlando) but so much is iffy and waiting on other people to accept positions or to move or to accept paycuts to keep a job. We'll see. he is going to call her at 4:15pm today if she hasn't called him first-just for an update, info, something!!

UG, we evacuated to Houston, and I HATED it. So much concrete. (Probably the fact that we were evacuated had alot to do with it, but I didn't much care for it when we were looking at colleges either. Plus we went to Atlanta for Gustav, and I didn't hate Atlanta :confused3 Well, except for the falcons part. :rolleyes1)

Home would be great, but if you HAD to move, Orlando would be the place. Who wouldn't want Mickey as their neighbor. :thumbsup2

I am feeling your frustration, though. Money is getting tighter and Tony is slacking on house work, so I'm about to get on his case big time about getting employed. I clean better than he does, but I refuse to do housework while I'm the only one working.

Hi Nola. :wave2:O my goodness it has been a long and tiring day. The Mother Daughter Camping trip this weekend was awesome. We canoed, rock climbed, vline & Vswang, played tennis, danced......Every muscle in my body is hurting. :rotfl::rotfl: We got home about 7:30 last night so I started to wash clothes and went to bed for about 10.

Hey y'all!

I missed a bunch here- have to catch up!

I've been feeling kind of bad- very tired and pains shooting up my lower back, hips and legs. I've been told this is pregnancy sciatica? Ugh, very unpleasant.

Mary- Lovely prom pic! And I agree, her dress is beautiful!

Tricia- Glad the party went well and the weather held up nicely for you!

Cara- Glad the you survived the camping trip! We're not camping people (I've never been). My idea of camping is being holed up in a hotel room!

Bethany- 92 degrees! :scared1: Well, it is just preparation for your arrival here...;)

Lori- I hope you get your news soon, and I think you've been beyond patient! I would be going nuts by now if I were you! I would also rather live here or Orlando- we also evacuated to Houston for K and lived there for six weeks. We hated it there! Now, the people were very nice and helpful to us, God bless them, but there was too much concrete! There wasn't enough green or parks and there were too many highways and so much traffic- it took forever to get anywhere. I've been told that the suburbs are much better than living in the city though.

Paul and I are soooo wanting it to be home or Orlando. When she called him the other day she asked him about going to Houston and he was all bummed. He feels if he has Houston under him, why can't he do that from here, b/c Louisiana and Texas are a district. Orlando is in another district-Florida, Georgia and some other state. I will confide that when we heard Orlando, the wheels started turning. The housing market is worse there than here and we could get a bigger house for the same $$. We even house-hunted to see what it was like. Plus like 20,000 other ideas-you can totally guess at least half of them!. We are waiting(we were told through the grapevine) on a person already in Orlando to stay and take that job, with a paycut, or for her to move to NYC and keep her exhorbitant(sp?) salary. I cannot see her moving if she has younger kids, but we will see. I am not sure this is the whole story though. But another peer of Paul's called to tell us they were interviewing for his district-she was in Florida- but this was before we heard about the other lady- and that there were a lot of good people there.

We have lived in Texas before, and it turned out suprisingly GOOD. Plus, homeschooling is easy in Texas, very easy. I am unsure about Florida, but I think we'd need to be under an umbrella program. I may ask on the homeschool Dis board. But I hesitate-as so many other things we thought may happen have not. I may just wait till we know.

Just so you know- we are VERY discouraged and blah right now. I mean, it is like waiting to see what will happen to your life... will we move? will we stay? if we move, where to? Can we sell our house? How long will that take? will they pay for housing in one place while we wait for a sale? Is the salary the same as before, less, or even abit more depending on if the cost of living is more? Leaving friends now that our kids are older will be HARD-but do we even have to worry about it at all??? We ARE starting to go nutty!

Sounds FUN!!!

The only good thing about Houston is that we have a cousin there-and all his immediate family are gone(passed on-mom , dad ,and brother), so it would be cool to give him some family and know them better. They also homeschool.
The other thing abotu Texas is homeschooling. You just show up and start. No letters, no nuthin'. In Louisiana, you have to write a letter to the DOE every year promising 180 days under some private school option/law. So here is very easy too. Some states require you to show curriculum and for your child to have an annual evaluation(more govt control over our kids-can you tell i disagree with govt control over my kids education??!!:rolleyes1) or you have to be under an "umbrella program" -I really do not understand about that though, but my cousin is under one in Tennessee.

Anyway- as said, we are starting to go batty! Our long weekend in Destin cannot come too soon.

Lori

Lori- I hear you on the waiting part. I read your earlier post but couldn't respond because I was underground (on the train). I can't imagine how nutty you are going. I know I was about to lose my mind and I was not waiting anywhere near as long as you!

Regarding Houston...my mom said I should go there because she knows somebody who could hire my dh. We both looked at pictures. All the photos of Houston I've seen are of concrete/highways! We just told her "we'd think about it." :lmao: Then somebody here at work told me I should apply to work in Houston because "there are a lot of jobs." I told her I didn't need a lot of jobs, I just needed ONE. And now I have it!

Oh homeschool laws in NY are a nightmare. Lots of paper pushing and stuff. This state has a lot of government. There has been a nonprofit volunteer organization here for years, they give you an orientation then line up volunteers to serve in small projects. One day only or long term, you can choose. Last week, the city got all excited because they just started the same thing and are promoting it as some new concept! If I worked for the nonprofit, it would feel like a slap in th face!

Lorie, yes...the weather is trying to get me ready to move. Do you think it could pack boxes for me?

I need to go...I stopped for dinner in Manhattan and I need to make a couple of stops on the way home.

Later! (this is from my phone, so my apologies if parts make no sense!)

Another one who can't stand Houston here.:scared:

Lori - Hugs and prayers for you and Paul, I can't imagine having this kind of patience.

Hey ya'll. Well, he called her and she is really thinking it is Houston:sad2:. There is a VERY small chance we could go to Orlando at this time but it would be a miracle-so I am asking you all to pray for a miracle to stay home or go to Orlando. Pleasepleaseplease!!! I have been in tears for the past 30 minutes-outside away from the kids. We will know tomorrow. Of course, every other time we were supposed to know "tomorrow" it has been much later than that. I have to keep my head up if we decide to take a job in Houston, b/c frankly, NOTHING excites me about Houston other than ease of homeschooling and a cousin or 2 we don't know well.

I just told Paul, where is that EASY button that is advertised on TV???

Lori

 I'm sorry. I'll pray for you that you can stay home or go to Orlando. Although if He puts you in Houston, there's probably a reason for it...

As for the Easy button, I think they were recalled...100% defective rate! :lmao:

They sell a button at WDW in the voice of Scar (from the Lion King) that says "I'm surrounded by idiots." I SO need that one!

cajunmommy - Our breaks are sort of similar. We get a lot of single days off scattered throughout the fall (Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day...) and we get the Thurs and Fri off for Thanksgiving. We get a week for Christmas; this year because of when it fell we actually got a week and a half. We usually will go to Dec 23 and then return on Jan 2 but this year we didn't go back until the 5th. We get a full week at President's Day (most of the Northeast does...skip WDW if it falls the same week as Mardi Gras - it will in 2010). We get Good Friday and the day before (Passover) off, and usually the week following Easter. Last year was weird though. Easter was so early that we had a week off in April but we had the day off for Good Friday that one day in March. We start the day after Labor Day and end "the weekday that has two weekdays after it at the end of June." So this year we end that Friday because there is a Monday and Tuesday after it.

After work I went and picked up my diploma, at at Quiznos, went to the World of Disney NYC, and stopped at Pathmark (supermarket). That's a LOT for me to do in one night after work!

Hey y'all,

I am way behind here and didn't have time to read back. The school fair was fun, A was off today because of it. Fair food took vengeance on me last night & today. But I'm feeling better now.

Lori, Prayers that good things come to your family. We don't know what's behind the door, but it will eventually all come together. I know it is so hard waiting, prayers to get y'all through it.

Lorie, I am sorry about the sciatica. I know too well how painful that is. Hopefully your little one will move around & the pain will pass.

Can I ask for more prayers for Angelina? She did get the job offer but the salary offer was much much lower than she expected. She had a good, honest meeting (again) with the GM & is waiting for him to meet with the owner. If this isn't meant to be, well than it just isn't, but please pray for her & her self esteem. This is hitting very hard on my independent, usually self-confident girl.

Good Morning NOLA.

I hope you all had a great weekend. Wow Bethany it's hotter in NY than in New Orleans right now.

Kendall's birthday party on Saturday was a hit. We had 28 kids which was really a good manageable number. The party was outside and it really wasn't too bad. A nice breeze was blowing. We had lots of tiki torches with citronella stuff in it so that helped some with the bugs and Off did the rest. I haven't fooled with my camera yet to upload the pictures but when I do I'll post a few.

Today I'll be bonding with my laundry room because I neglected the clothes all weekend. :laundy: Fun times playing catch up today.

:laundy: laudry takes over my life most weeks... but glad Kendall has a great party!

Home would be great, but if you HAD to move, Orlando would be the place. Who wouldn't want Mickey as their neighbor. :thumbsup2

.
Well... me.... but perhaps because I grew up with him as my neighbor:rotfl: and Minnie Mouse too... and that one quite literally since my next door neighbor was Minnie Mouse... and brought her costume home from time to time cause she had an event to go too... normally that is a big NO NO...

All in all though Lori... Orlando isn't that bad of a place to live. My mother homeschooled my brother... and he had to do a yearly test... but she only had to send a letter once. Granted this was 8 years ago (My brother is much younger than me) and she homeschooled me for summer school... but that was a disaster... a CPA has no business teaching her mathphobia child math... those books hurt:headache:

I hope that it doesn't last long! I feel your pain, I went through that with each pregnancy and I felt lucky that it lasted about a week a piece, but no fun at all! Just take it easy!

I like the hotel room better too, but I don't mind camping... providing the weather is nice like this past weekend. With my newfound fear of trees falling... when the wind blows at night I can't sleep and shake like a leaf. I grew up in a rural area and the woods were my playground... Sean was laughing at me cause I didn't mind the bugs... even held one or two that Spencer brought over to show me... but in the city I scream like a girl... oh.. wait a minute... I am a girl.. :rolleyes1

I pray that you have the strength to get through this process. I hate being in limbo for an hour so I am impressed with how you have done so far. I am also not a fan of Texas in general... and I pray you can stay home... but Houston or Orlando aren't terrible places to live.

Another one who can't stand Houston here.:scared:

Yeah, we here in LA know all about MG and Presidents day at WDW... ouch.. and they are pretty similar... but no Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah that I am aware of here...

Thank you and yes, I just said one after I read it. It IS a self esteem killer to take a paycut. We are concerned about that too.

here...

Ahhh! This is the reason I use a computer program for math. It does the lesson, shows the examples, then they do thier lesson and plug in thier answers. If they get it wrong, it shows them how to do it-step by step. And grades them daily! It may not be the BEST approach, but it prevents many tempers flaring. It is called Teaching Textbooks.

Bless you, having a CPA for a homeschool mom- that had to be fun(pun) for math:eek:.

I have lived in Plano, Texas and it turned out to be a blessing. Houston excited us both SOOOO much less, but we will see. Paul asked her and said he'd persist, should we not get Orlando, for him to work from home. It IS the same region.

We have many things in our heads for Orlando-like volunteering at GKTW, having an extra room for friends to crash for a vacation, the MILLIONS of field trip opportunities.(Disney has field trips galore, lots of behind the scenes things, meeting with artists and imaginears), the steady flow of visitor traffic we'd probably have(we'd love to be a blessing to some friends who cannot afford a Disney trip).... okay I'll stop.... till we know.

I'm glad you noticed this about Houston, too. My parents just thought I was being snotty, irritable, obnoxious, difficult, etc.

Regarding Houston...my mom said I should go there because she knows somebody who could hire my dh. We both looked at pictures. All the photos of Houston I've seen are of concrete/highways!

Again, someone with the same perception as me! I'll have to let my parents know that I MAY OCCASIONALLY have valid points from time to time.

We just told her "we'd think about it." :lmao: Then somebody here at work told me I should apply to work in Houston because "there are a lot of jobs." I told her I didn't need a lot of jobs, I just needed ONE. And now I have it!

Boy... not about Houston, but about Dallas-Fort Worth area... My dh's parents thought the same about me!!!!! With a capital O on the obnoxious... just because they chose to move there after Katrina. They even bought a giant house so "we could live upstairs"... ummmm, might have wanted to ask us first, huh? No way, no how... but we are married to the state of Louisiana as DH already has 11 years vested with the State now... and should we ever leave NOLA... I am moving north.. would love to experience the true 4 seasons... just will have to batten down the hatches since I am scared of the thought of driving in the snow...

Where did you get that Disney Rose Bush? I would love to get one... looks like I have a chance with that one

Glad you agree too. Um, YEAH, on the "live upstairs" thing. :scared1:  Not so much.

That bush came from Perino's on Veterans. It was $21.00, but you can see it was well worth it, and they guarantee their plants, which was important in case I killed it. They had plenty of them in March. Oh, and my white bush I bought from there too already gave me two white roses and has a dozen more buds on it as we speak. :goodvibes I love white roses.

That is a lot for after work! You got moving tonight!

:lmao: on the easy button... and the scar one too

Yeah, we here in LA know all about MG and Presidents day at WDW... ouch.. and they are pretty similar... but no Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah that I am aware of here...

Now you know why my favorite time to go is mid/late August. :headache: Beats the heck out of any of those other times in terms of crowds. Also, I went for a weekend in December and it was cold. I'd rather go in the summer than deal with a coat at WDW. There's something WRONG about doing WDW in a COAT.

WHERE did you see that button?? I certainly didn't see it because I SO would have bought it without a second thought! ME WANT!:lmao:

I saw it this past December in the stores in MGM, errrr, DHS, and I think in a few other places. (You know how they have the same stuff all over now...) I don't know why I didn't get it. If I ever were to see it again, I'd make sure to get it!

... and should we ever leave NOLA... I am moving north.. would love to experience the true 4 seasons... just will have to batten down the hatches since I am scared of the thought of driving in the snow...

:scared1: I won't do it anymore....kinda limited places where I was willing to move this time! Left me with California (i.e. The Shake and Bake State), Arizona (120?!? That's today's LOW!), and the southeast (at least you get 3 days warning...) :headache:

That bush came from Perino's on Veterans. It was $21.00, but you can see it was well worth it, and they guarantee their plants, which was important in case I killed it. They had plenty of them in March. Oh, and my white bush I bought from there too already gave me two white roses and has a dozen more buds on it as we speak. :goodvibes I love white roses.

That is well worth it! (This comes from the girl who saw regular honey for $14 in Manhattan a few months ago....my sense of "it's a good price" may be slightly skewed at this point!)

Thanks...I need my days brightened! Remind me again WHY I signed up to do this after school thing?!? At least it ends at the end of May, so in June I'll get out at 3 each day. That rose is gorgeous.

So we are supposed to get to 88 today but then drop down to 63 tomorrow. Not sure what is going to come through to make it drop almost 30 overnight! I am kind of glad because the a/c doesn't seem to be working so well. :scared:

Okay...I need to get going...have a good day!

I just told Paul, where is that EASY button that is advertised on TV???

Lori

On a lighter note Lori I think that would make a great tag for you. Where is that Tag Fairy when you need her? I hope Paul gets the news he is looking for today.

Bethany is the New York World of Disney store big like the one in Down Town Disney or just like any other Disney Store in the malls?

My niece is getting married in three weeks and she is making gift bags for all the out of town guests coming in for the wedding. I offered to make fleur de lis succors (white and dark chocolate) for her to add to the bags. Yesterday I made 80 white ones and today my back and neck are killing me. I guess I didn't realize how long I would be standing hunched over doing this. Today before I tackle the chocolate ones I'm taking some Ibuprofen.
