Metform

May I ask what the health benefits of cinnamon are? I wasn't aware that it was something other than yummy on toast! :lovestruc

Anyway, I have a big ol bottle of metformin and I keep looking at it and saying ... maybe tomorrow ... lol. I'm so afraid of the side effects!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please try it! many many people take it with little to no side effects. I have had GI issues for years before taking the metformin - so knew it was pretty much a given for me. I still choose to take the meformin and manage the side effects.

Typically it comes in 500 mg pills. Dosage can be anywhere from 1 to 4 pills a day. If your dosage is more than one a day - still start with 1. Give it a few days and then add a 2nd. Many times doctors will have you take 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening to overlap the doses. This is also gentler on your system.

1 pill once a day does not give my any problems. I take 2 pills twice a day so deal with the side effects.

Thanks for your encouragement! I ended up starting it about three days ago. I'm a baby about side effects, so I decided to start with a super-small dose and increase it from there.

I used a pillsplitter to split a 500 mg dose into quarters and then took one at breakfast and one at dinner the first day. Then that went fine, so I added a lunch dose as well. Tomorrow I will move up to thirds so I will be on the official starting dose of 500 mg/day and can increase more from there depending on what my dr. wants.

I've had minimal to no side effects. My stomach hurt a couple of times after taking a dose, and I did have one shaky episode I can only guess was a mild hypoglicemic episode -- I have these occasionally when I'm not controlling my diet well or I eat a lot, but it was sort of out of the blue that I had one the other day so I assume the metformin was the cause.

But otherwise doing great! :)

you should contact the pharmacist about splitting the pills - some shouldn't be split - there is a reason behind it that i can't remember but just make sure before you do it

Pills that are extended release can't be split, or crushed. Metformin can be split/crushed as long as it is not Metformin ER.

This is true. The pills are formulated so that a little medication is released at a time. When you break it, you get it all at once. This may have contributed to you feeling shaky, themarquis; normally that is unlikely to happen.

Oh, no, this was the regular kind of Metformin -- I'm pretty sure it's splittable and I think the doc actually told me to do it (she said to take 1/2 at each meal)

But I will double-check just to make sure :)

well i took it last night at dinner and was up until about 2am - not running to the w/c but i definitely am not constipated lol

had a slightly upset stomach this morning but i can't be sure if that was the meds or just my normal twinges i've been having lately. it's why i've gone through a bunch of the pg tests and all are negative.

we'll see how the next week or so go and if it eases up.

One of my coworkers is taking it and that is the reaction she has too. She has to run to the bathroom and not to pee. She is trying to get pregnant so that is why she is on it. She is very overweight too.
