metal detectors at Vero Beach?

We have 3 nights booked in September at VB, and I thought it might be fun to rent a metal detector for walking the beach.

I remember years ago they had them available at the resort, but I haven't seen them lately. Does anyone know of a rental place near by that would rent them daily for a reasonable rate?

Also, am I correct that the beach is public property and I'm allowed to use a metal detector there?

I'm not sure about the rentals. I usually see people using them, but never know if they are rented or owned.

The beach is definitely public domain as are all coastal shores. That is, the area between the ebb and flow marks.

I don't remember if they rented them at Ebb & Flo's but I think they did at the little store up the street next to Orchid Island Pizzeria. (Boppy's I think is the name) They are right next to a public entrance onto the beach.

Don't skip away those flat /greenish /black rocks They could be a "piece of eight" Don't forgot to look closely at what looks like a green opaque pebble. It could be an Emerald from the 1715 fleet. There have been some nice ones found at/around the Resort beaches in recent years. No one gives out their "secret" spots after storms to hunt but a great place to start metal detecting is from the south end of the Resort heading south a mile or two. This is the site of Corrigan's Wreck one of the 1715 fleet ships and things are still being found today. It's a needle in a haystack but you never know. I also know for a fact a DVC tourist lost a $1200 gold/diamond bracelet a few years ago a few yards off the Disney Beach.

The reason I was given for the rentals at the Resort being discontinued years ago was the maintainence required after people were getting them wet. The coils were waterproof but not the boxes like the waterproof units we use for underwater hunting. Finders Keepers on the beach. Fill in your holes that you dig. Throw away the numerous beertabs and trash you will probably find. Please stay out of the water It's illegal and covered by admiralty law and have fun with the family searching for buried treasure!!!!!

Great info madcoco... are those all your finds in the picture? How long did it take you to build that collection? I can see those silver pieces would be easy to mistake for junk/nothing at first glance.

We'll be there mid September... maybe a little weather will stir up the beach a bit and we'll get lucky. At the very least, it's still a nice walk on the beach.

Thanks. Those were in two days after Hurricane Jeanne. Gold looks almost the same as when it went in the drink 100's of years ago Silver turns the color you see when it lays buried in the beaches to be uncovered by storms. When they are found out in the water they are almost coal black and encrusted. Almost every year someone finds that needle in a haystack and usually makes a significant artifact find even as close as a few steps from the Resort's Beach access. Up until the early 90's Hundreds of objects use to wash up on the beaches. Corrigan's Wreck near the resort is named for Hugh Corrigan who owned a beachhouse and his house was a mini museum full of artifacts he found walking the beaches. The Green Cabin Wreck(not to be confused with the Cabin wreck up near Sebastian Inlet.That's a whole other treasure loaded Galleon) for which the lounge is named after, is from 1618. The copy of the astrolabe you see in the lounge is one of only a few of it's type in existance. The real one goes back in forth between our museum up the street in Sebastian and KeyWest. It was found right off the Disney beach in a few feet of water by one of the late MelFisher's sons.

Just an update here for you treasure fans. From my friend Capt Greg's boat The Goldhound. This is the first find of the year just off the beach at the South end of the resort. Less than 15ft of water. Doesn't look like much but it is gold,rubies and diamonds.

Wow, very cool. Any chance you could plant some of those items in the dunes for us to find in mid September?

Kidding of course.... but we look forward to giving it a try on vacation.

No problem You just never know. People bring in stuff frequently to the museum to check out and you would be surprised at how many times it is something from one of the numerous wrecks and not just beach trash. As someone mentioned earlier Boppy's Beachside Market right next to the Resort has them
$10/hr $20/day. + deposit until return.

OT but Boppy's now has many new food items including Burritos, BBQ and Grilled fish for B,L and D. It's another alternative when you are looking to grab a bite to eat.

For the beachcombers. One of those precious little green "rocks" found in Feb this year on the Disney Resort area beaches. No detector. Possibly the 1618 Green cabin Wreck or probably the 1715 fleet. It is partially encrusted in wormrock Found in one of those piles of broken seashells/debris you see on the sand walking along.
