Metadate CD for kids diagnosed with ADHD.

As a teacher, I knew my daughter had ADHD whe she was 18 months old. She was very, very different from the other kids and has always been labeled "hyper" by her preschool teachers. I waited until her Kindergarten teacher mentioned it, and I immediately had her tested by our school psychologist. I then took those results to her doctor.

She recommended Intuniv for her, a nonstimulant. The first week she was very sleepy, but after that we have been great!

I will add that putting her on meds was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made. Good luck to you and the journey you are beginning!

DS has had no side effects from Metadate.

We have tried and tried to teach him how to swallow pills, but he still can't. We smear a tiny bit of peanut butter on a Ritz cracker, then open the pill and put the contents on it, then add more peanut butter.

He gets this cracker right before he eats his breakfast, around 7am. The effect lasts until around 3pm.

Thank you to everyone who answered. For those of you that give your child an ADHD med, do you do it before or after they eat in the morning?

One of DS's issues is he can't sit still for class or dinner, but can sit for HOURS while playing Legos! I have to constantly tell him to sit back down. Did you start at a high dose and come down or vice versa?

What side effects have you dealt with if any?

We give the meds to our son in the morning right before breakfast. The meds take about 30-40 min to kick in so we try to get him to eat as much as he can to make up for the little bit of lunch he might eat. Once it kicks in, he loses his appetite.

The doctor will always start the child on the lowest does for their height/weight and then work up. Only the first time did we notice that "spaced out" look in his eyes and the doctor had to go even lower.

My son couldn't even sit still to play video games or play anything w/o the meds. He'd run wild from toy to toy. YOu can just see how scattered his mind is when you watch him try to do anything. Even his handwriting will change once the meds kick in. It goes from scribble to legible. Just amazing.

DS's school just called and said DS says his legs feel tingly. I know the meds can give them that effect. Have you guys ever dealt with that? I have a call in to the doctor and am waiting to see what they say. I'm assuming that the tingling is due to the 2nd part of the meds are kicking in right now. I gave him 15mg on a spoonful of applesauce this morning at 6:45 before he ate his breakfast.
