I was so excited today to find out that the dental assistant who'd been working on my root canal for the last hour is a new DVC member. But I was shocked to realize how little she knew about her purchase. She'd never heard of Beach Club Villas. And when I told her that DH's favorite place is Old Key West, she said "Oh, you mean down by Miami? We've been down there!" She didn't know it was a DVC resort at Disney. Is this normal that some people buy with so little knowledge? Or am I just more knowledgeable because of all this great info here. I just couldn't believe she'd never heard of BCV or OKW!

And everybody is worried that new SSR owners will flood the other resorts: not if they don't even know they exist! ;)

Did she buy at the World, or over the phone? I could see someone purchasing over the phone that wouldn't have a lot of knowledge about the other resorts. I don't think that the "other" resorts get talked about much because guides don't want people looking at resales. JMHO They probably are just casually mentioned on the tour. My guess is they talk more about trading out for the cruise,.... that type thing.

Simba'smom....

So....Was it before...after...or during your root canal that you asked these questions????  Hee-Hee

Simba's Mom....please forgive me...I just couldn't resist, sitting here, picturing you in the dentist's chair..desperately trying to talk!!!

She sounds like maybe she didn't really understand your questions..?zxcv !
I would hope the CM responsible for the sale would have explained all the opportunities available? Right??

Again...I apologize, Simba's Mom
Hope you are feeling better?? :flower1:

Hey, Senecabeach--I loved your pic of the castle w/ the fireworks behind it-Would you mind if I used it as a background on my desktop? I have been trying to get one of the pics from the other site, but they are all fuzzy--yours seems perfect! Wanted to see if it was OK! thanks, DJH

You know we bought in 2001 and the member books were much more detailed back then and gave more information about each resort (I think). After we bought, I read the book cover to cover many times and I think I learned alot from the book. The new book doesn't seem quite as informative as the old one - maybe that makes newer members a little less informed. Also, I think I really became a DVC expert from reading these boards. Someone I work with bought in last year and took their first DVC trip this past Oct. The other day she mentioned she was waiting for her 2005 use year to start so she could make her reservation for Oct. 2005. I asked if she was staying somewhere other than her home resort and she said no - she thought she must wait until her 2005 points were actually there to make a reservation. I explained about the 11 month home resort advantage and she said that she thought you could only use the 11 month advantage if you were going 11 months from your use year month. Anyway - I guess that just goes to show that many people are members, but don't quite understand all the ins and outs of DVC!

Actually she bought at WDW, she said that she happened to stop at one of the kiosks in MGM. And I do wish I could excuse her by saying she didn't understand me (mumble, mumble). However, this was right at the end of my appointment that it came out, when I said, "I hope this doesn't happen every time I go to WDW" and one thing led to another [initially my tooth had abcessed my last day at WDW]. But that's true-doesn't sound like we have to worry too much about SSR owners all wanting to stay elsewhere-if they don't even know where else there is!

Isn't it interesting :)? It does amaze me how many times we tell people we are going to WDW & staying at Old Key West & they think we are going to the Keys. Amazing!

Hope you are feeling better!

Believe it or not, some people are just quick to make purchases without really spending much time thinking through the specifics. A friend of mine happened to be taking a vacation to WDW shortly after I had joined the DVC. I never once pressured him to consider such an option for himself, so I was surprised when he returned from vacation and said he had joined the DVC. Of course, because he didn't spend much time thinking about the specifics, he forgot to bank his points on time last year when his family was not going to take a vacation due to his wife's pregnancy.

OK, I have a tendency to rush things, but I cannot believe that one! You would have to not look at any point charts to not know about the other resorts! (Quite honestly, I looked at layouts and point charts first, before the nitty gritty). I bought SSR, so the info that I received should have been similar. Sorry to disappoint you, but I know there are other DVC resorts. ;) Wow!

I didn't find this forum until after I had made the decision to buy and put down my deposit. However, I was aware of the other resorts and I have been educated more on the details of making a ressie, etc from this forum. I do know that when add on I will probably initially add more SSR points and then look at adding another resort to get another 11 month window. Since that may be difficult to do through Disney, I may do it resale. I wouldn't have known to look resale or about getting a second 'home' resort without these boards. BTW, my first trip 'home' at SSR isn't until Dec but I will be staying on points at OKW May/June and maybe/hopefully BWV/BCV in Oct(although SSR or OKW again would be fine too-I care more about the dates but it would be nice to be near Epcot).
