Within the next week or two we will be upgrading to a new version of our board software. If you would like to get a preview of the new boards I have already upgraded www.dreamsboards.com
Alex

Looks good! Also doesn't look much different! Out of curiousity, what is better about it? Less bugs? Less tempermental! Just wondering.

I think it's a *much* different format. We'll now have to click on replies and view them one at a time, rather than having them all on the page at the same time, as they are now.

I can see where clicking on, and seeing, only 1 reply at a time would save bandwidth and speed up the boards

At any rate, thanks to the webmasters for the work they're putting into this :)

SeaSpray, I don't see any difference in how you see the replies. It looks the same on my computer as the way we see them now.

When you go to a thread (on the board that Alex linked to, above) and click on it, you don't see, at the top, a "waterfall" (for lack of a better word. lol or maybe they're called branches or something?? LOL), which shows the replies to the original question, and that we have to click on the replies one by one?

Make sure you click on an actual thread, and then view the replies. When you click on the reply, you are only seeing that 1 reply at that point. You no longer are seeing the original post, or any other subsequent replies. You have to click through the replies, one by one, to see them. I can imagine that some of the more popular threads will end up with a lot of branches on their trees. lol

P.S. Just called my tech support person, DH ;) He said they're called "trees". Ok, I was close calling them branches. Anyway, this *is* a different format. You don't see the difference until you get into an actual thread though. This new format will make the boards seem quicker, especially for people on dial-up (people still have dial-up??) because you are no longer downloading an entire page of replies at one time.

I clicked on a topic and saw the replies listed below it. So I am not sure again if we are doing the same thing with different results or what is the difference.

I belong to other boards that use that same format so I may already have checked something to display the replies that way.

Yes that must be it, I just found this on the new board's FAQ section. You apparently have yours set at Linear or Hybrid Mode, which is what I'll choose, once the change is made here to the DIS board. At least the mystery is now solved :magnify: LOL

What are the various thread display options?

When viewing a thread, you will be able to view the thread from a choice of four modes.

Linear Mode (Oldest First) - In this mode, posts are displayed chronologically from oldest to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously.
Linear Mode (Newest First) - This is the same as the above mode, except that posts are ordered in an opposite way (newest first).
Threaded Mode - In this mode, a tree is shown along with every post. This tree allows you to see the relationship each post has to others, in terms of who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time.
Hybrid Mode - This mode is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed like in the threaded mode, but multiple posts are displayed simultaneously like in the linear modes.

P.S. I should've checked this out first; DH told me the difference was probably a user setting. :earboy2:

There are choices under "Display Mode". Selecting Linear mode displays the replies one after another.

Oops, you had already put in this info while I was typing - you have to be fast around here ;)

Do you have to log in to find the place to change the display mode? I can't find it and it says it doesn't recognize my name or password.

While it may be quicker for dial-up, it's much more difficult for me to operate. I have a pinched nerve in my neck, arthritis in my shoulder and carpal tunnel syndrome. (Getting older isn't fun.) Using the mouse is something I avoid whenever possible because of the pain. I have my display options set to "Hybrid", but I still have to click on each reply to see it. I will probably have to stop being an active participant in these boards (unless I have something set incorrectly) because of having to click on each reply.

This new format is definitely NOT friendly to the disabled (or even slightly handicapped like me), unless there is some display setting that I've missed. :sad1:
