You are correct in your assessment about how threads are ordered by default. The "Important" ones will always be at the top. Then they are ordered by the threads with the most recent posts.
You can change things though. If you want to see all of the posts by a particular poster, just click on "Thread Starter" at the top of the column. All of the posts will be listed alphabetically by Thread Starter name.
If you click on the column titles, each will order the posts differently.
Also, if you click on the number of posts in the thread, it will give you a list of those who have responded to that thread and how many times they have responded.
Also, if you go to User CP (control panel) listed at the top of the page, click on User Options, it will give you a few choices on how to view these boards. Lots of neat tools in this message board software.
