Message Board Rage

Recently I was in a store shopping. The radio was on the John Tesh Show I believe and he was talking about message board rage. This board was the first thought that came to my mind when he was discussing the issue.

I think this is a bad sign. I think perhaps when we are having a bad day we should all stay off the board and not terrorize people to bits. Perhaps take some medicine to make you feel calmer. Perhaps you need a bubble bath.

Things seem like they are getting more and more out of control lately.

I agree.:thumbsup2

And somewhat OT, but I love John Tesh. I used to listen to his program every night but since I moved I can't find a nearby station that carries it.

Since day 1 I have seen some not so polight responses to posts. I don't think it is new or getting worse. I think it is and always will be a risk you take that some Troll *someone who loves to provoke a fight* will respond to your thread or a post specifically to cause trouble

Maybe some people's lives are so boring they feel they need to be a Drama Queen

:rotfl2: I've never thought of it in that context before but that makes sense!

My opinion - The boards aren't changing any more than our society is.

It's a sign of the times?????

Hmmmm....I'm kinda lost.....
Since the election I haven't noticed too much hostility. I also don't go into the long threads that have been going on for a while either....maybe that's why i'm confused.

The other issue here is that we tend to have some very polarizing discussions. When you have a board that is made up of a very diverse group of people, you will find that people will have very different views on subject, and often feel strongly about those views. I think people are more comfortable defending their views in a non-threatening medium such as the internet. There's a natural tendency when others disagree with something we feel strongly about to overreact, and the situation just continues to snowball. Sometimes we just need to take a break and wait a few minutes before we respond.

Perhaps we should in that case use the same rules we do with our RL friends agree to disagree and never discuss the flaming issues of flamingness. :cool1:

I admit, there are some posters who I wouldn't respond to because I don't want to ruffle their feathers.

Huh? Maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but I'm having trouble deciphering the last part of your post.

I've noticed some Hot topics tend to be anything related to religion,To spank or not spank your child, Anything pet related, people talking on cell phones while attempting to drive (not me, of course).....Hmmm, can ya'll think of anymore? I have seen alot of message board rage around here. But all you have to do is step away from your computer. :rotfl:

Nah....all the mean posters are gone, remember? It's all Pixie Dust and Daisies now.

It actually was "better" at some point. The turning point was when WebTV and AOL gained access to the Internet. That changed the nature of things, and it didn't take long for the tenor of the place change, overall -- to just about what you see today, AFAIC. It hasn't changed much, over the last twenty years.

It's funny you posted that because just this morning on my way to work, I thought to myself, "I wonder if the people who write things on the Dis would actually say some of those things to people in real life?" Personally, I wouldn't write anything on these boards that I wouldn't feel comfortable saying to their faces in real life. That may just be me though.

Even if I'm having a bad day, just coming on the Dis can make it better! :)

Just a thought! :thumbsup2

Even though I hate to admit this I agree with this. It is nothing to go into any public place and have a total stranger try to pick a fight with you. It has happened to me several times lately.

I don't know if it is the rude comments or the OT remarks or both that trouble me. I am relatively new to the boards and when I first got on here the election was going on hot and heavy and I kind of got caught up in all of that....anyway I had enough of that real quick and tried to start new more positive threads and almost every time I do, I get attacked in some way by someone who disagrees or thinks my parenting skills are lacking. I have to agree with one poster who said it seems like some posters are just looking for an argument. Not saying that people can't have their own opinions but for crying out loud...stay on topic...answer the question and try not to judge so much.:flower3:

when it comes to "hot topics" I think some people take it too far. I also think some people tend to judge right away. Some people need to learn how to read first.

I really do find it amazing how some people don't read, they see certain hot topic words and start flaming. It always amazes me. I've learned certain words you just don't say. There is one word imparticular, it's just a word, but some posters see that word and just go to flaming and judging, it's almost funny. I actually feel sorry for them.

I think when that happens, it their real life that they are confusing with forums stuff, KWIM?
