Merged Random Questions 10/17

FOOD 😥 If I save anything from a dinner it usually just sits in the fridge and goes bad. We are not leftover people!👎

Also, Milk, even if I buy a quart, I end up throwing some away. I usually buy FF or 1% and have it past it's buy dates...it's always good for a few days after. Hubby and I sometimes skip breakfast and wait until lunch to eat, the reason why I never finish it.

Freeze them.

things like chili if not enough to feed entire family I freeze in individual containers and we take for work lunches.

If enough for all of us I freeze and put on meal plan for a week away.

Easy peasy. No need to waste food.

I have frozen. Some things I freeze, like spaghetti sauce and soup, I get away with. Most of the time everyone says they can taste "freezer," whatever the heck that means. I live with...I don't even know what to call them. It's frustrating.

I really hate to throw away cooked food/left overs. I was a little more wasteful years ago. Kids were never really into left overs - come to think of it, even DH.

If we can't have the meal we prepared for whatever reason, or have left over food/don't want to have it more than once, I freeze it. Some things freeze better than others. Some does get thrown out. Not enough for another meal, not enough to freeze, etc. If we have enough and we are not sure how well it will freeze, we can always throw it out after. It is usually not enough - maybe in addition to something else/lunch.

The stores sell frozen prepared meals, so I can freeze my own fresh cooked frozen left overs.

We have also intentionally prepared extra to freeze - pizza, sauce, broccoli rabi (on sale) and baked ziti

I find it sad and just hate throwing it out. Why?

Need to take time out to shop
Cost money/everything is so expensive (I have become more frugal as I get older/not sure why)
Takes time to prepare
Time to cook
Time to clean up everything involved

It only takes a second to throw it away - we have a busy schedule, our time is precious - having something handy in an emergency is priceless.

Back to the question - I am not sure what we waste - maybe water? coffee? bananas? ( I am sure there must be one or two more)

I don't batch-cook because I only have the freezer on my fridge and there's never much space in there. The ice maker, two things of ice cream, a few frozen pizzas and a bunch of frozen fruit and vegetables and it's full.

I'm fanatical about portion size; most of our waste comes from food that gets purchased and not cooked before it spoils. The best laid plans... :(
Finishing school in 2+ years. That and keeping my family safe and happy.
What is "What Are You Thinking About Right Now". :goodvibes This could actually be fun if we do it right. Can't wait to hear whether or not I guessed the correct question. :wave2:

Thoughts today are hoping that there is no traffic jam as I head to a Important Scan I have at 3pm.

r.e. bold -- DW likes some milk at 8pm and since I no longer drink it due to dairy not the best for PCa (Prostate Cancer) I will open a new Half Gallon of FF and freeze 16oz. in a glass container with lid. Let it thaw in fridge as the HG gets low and it's good to go without a flavor change.

I have found that eliminating air in container when freezing leftovers by using clear plastic touching the product helps prevent the freezer burn taste. DW loves Publix Carrot Bar Cake but only has about a 1/2" slice at a time. I put the container in the freezer immediately to harden the icing then remove and place the clear plastic over the entire surface. Time for a slice just pull off plastic, cut and replace plastic. She had a piece last night on the cake that has a sell by 7/1/2021 date on the label and it tasted as fresh.
