On our upcoming trip, we are only eating at restaurants to which we have never visited. I am really excited.

Jiko is one of the restaurants we will be visiting. The menu is intriguing, and I was wondering if anyone has specific items we simply "can't miss"?

By the way, is there such a thing as wine pairing options at Jiko??

I'm doing the same thing!!! Only eating at places I've never eaten before and Jiko is one of them.

I've decided that I'm having the filet with the macroni and cheese. I keep thinking here I am at an upscale African themed restaurant and I'm eating mac and cheese?!?!?! But everyone seems to love it so I'm going to give it a try.

Ask the waiter--they know the menu best! :thumbsup2 Here you'll get answers all over the map.

Where else have you chosen to eat? Other than a few resort restaurants, we are close to having eaten at every restaurant after this trip! In addition to Jiko, we are doing 1900 Park Fare, Flying Fish, Coral Reef, Boatwrights, and Raglan Road.

We ate there last November Myself, my sister 4 "kids" 16-24. The 3 guys all had some combo of the short ribs & the filet, they switched around the potatoes & the mac 'n cheese. the meat was extremely tender & they all loved what they had. I had the scallops & hated them. My daughter who is a vegetarian & the reason we picked Jiko in the 1st place had 3 different vegetarian appetizers as her 1st course & entree(which they were happy to do) didn't really like any of them. My sister had some kind of fish which she loved. Our waiter disappeared & after we had been there for 3 hours we asked some other waiter to get our desserts to go so we were limited by what wd travel well. I was very disappointed by our experience here, but as I said, the more American steaks & ribs & potatoes & mac 'n cheese were excellent.

I'm doing Bistro de Paris, Jiko, The Plaza, California Grill, Kimonos, The Beirgarten, Yorkshire County Fish Shop, Backlot Express(I think that's the one back near the backstage tour), Beaches and Cream and a few other lunch type spots as needed. AK is going to be tough since there are so few places to eat but I'm sure I'll find something for lunch.

It's going to be an adventure for me trying to stay away from spots I've already eaten at. I'm going with all new places including counter service.

It is kind of cool though finding new places to eat. I'm even going to ride some old rides I usually pass by and I'm staying at a new resort for me...plus this is my fist solo trip.

It looks like you've got some good choices there. I love Raglan Road, especially when the entertainment is happening. Have a great trip! :thumbsup2

Here is my review with pictures from September... it was amazing!

Jiko - Wednesday September 6th

We stayed at the AKL in February and fell in love with this resort. We came back for more yummy food at Jiko!

We started with the Lamb "Patis", wich was pulled lamb rolled in phyllo, onion salad, and mint-cilantro chutney:

WOW, was this good! I wasn't expecting it to be so tasty, and I admit I was a little afraid of the sauce. But, it was very good! :teeth:

Next, I had the Wood-Grilled Filet Mignon with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce:

I had this in February, and I had it again this time. It was amazing. I recommend the beef cooked medium. The red wine sauce is so tasty, and I don't even like wine!

My Mom had the Pan-Roasted and Maize-crusted Halibut with vegetables of the moment, tomato butter sauce, and crispy sweet potatoes:

She LOVED it! I don't love fish, but I really liked it too. The sauce was very good with the fish.

We finished off with the Flourless Chocolate Mocha Cake:

We don't like coffee or mocha, but our waiter assured us that it would only taste of chocolate. He was right. It was quite yummy, and tasted more like chocolate brownies than cake.

Overall, the evening was great. The service was really good, and the food was fantastic!

You can't go wrong with the beef filet and mac & cheese at Jiko. It is my favorite meal in the world! I get it every time we go to Jiko.

You have to try the Kenyan Coffee Barbecued Chicken Flatbread! Yummmmmmmmy! It was sooo good! I also agree, the Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon - with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce is delicious, too! I had the Pistachio Creme Brulee for dessert. It was a great meal! :thumbsup2

I had the flatbread too. It was great!

The filet was EXCELLENT. I loved it.

The pistachio creme brulee was the best dessert I had all week - yummy!

I asked my waiter for a wine recommendation based on what I planned to order. He hit the nail on the head - it was delicious.

Our family is going to Jiko for the first time in June. I am NOT a fan of cheese, can I get the filet on just macaroni, no cheese???

We have been to Jiko twice now. Our son had the filet with mac & chees both times. He was very happy with his choice. I had the filet with mac & chees the 1st time (loved it) and the Durban Shrimp Curry the 2nd time (meal was good. shrimp were ok) Can't for the life of me remember what my wife had the 1st time, and she had the Tamarind Braised Beef Short Rib which was FANTASTIC.

The appetizers we have tried are;Kenyan Coffee Barbecued Chicken Flatbread and Taste of Africa. Both quite good.

Desserts; the only one I can really remember is the Pistachio Creme Brulee which was delicious.

My two favorite appetizers are:

Maize and Sweet Potato "Tamales"
Kenyan Coffee Barbecued Chicken Flatbread

Both of the above are excellent. I have had both a couple of times and they were equally wonderful each time.

My two favorite entrees are:

Wood-Grilled Pork Tenderloin
Tamarind Braised Beef Short Rib

I can't say enough good things about either of these. The flavour of both were wonderful, and both were extremely tender.

I have had the Filet Mignon w/ mac & cheese, and while this was a good dish it wasn't any better than any other well prepared filet. I have also had the Chermoula Roasted, Tanglewood Chicken, but didn't love it...

I really miss the chocolate purse dessert they used to do. But I have never had a bad dessert here.

I hope all of you trying it out enjoy it as much as we have. It is our favorite fine dining experience at WDW. :goodvibes

If a Jiko server was walking up to me right now (oh, how I'd love that!), I'd order:

Kenyan Coffee BBQ flatbread

Lamb shank

chocolate cake - with a wonderful pressed pot of Kenyan coffee

(DH would argue that the chicken is better than the lamb!).

I would also like to point out that if you are a wine drinker, there are several very nice African wines that you can try. Sorry, I don't have any names offhand, but I have never been disappointed. Something to consider... they used to have a wine flight... don't know if they do anymore... ? Does anyone know?

This thread is making me rethink my October ADR's and add Jiko back in! I was keeping the evenings open for Food & Wine dinners! Hmmmmm....

Forget the pistachio creme brulee (although I'll admit it's quite good)-- I adore the Green Apple Mascarpone Trifle. Mmm... so good... And yummy flatbreads, too...

One of the nice things about ordering wine here is that a really high percentage of the wait staff are also Sommeliers. So you can expect good recommendations according to your tastes and what you order. It helps a lot when they have a load of African Wines you won't have tasted because you can't get them anywhere else.
