My DH has a heavy beard so has never used one because he was not sure how good of a shave he would get, but would like to try it. I was thinking about getting one for him for Christmas, but was hoping I could get some suggestions on brands, models, etc. from anyone with experience.

Thanks!!

My DH has a heavy beard and has found that the expensive Norelco ones are the only ones that can really work well for him. He has tried the cheaper models and other brands, but he always goes back to the Norelco. No idea what the model number is, but I got it at Walmart and paid around $125 for it.

I've been using an electric forever and have tried different brands and styles. In my experience the shave is not as close as a razor but it's not as rough on my face. You can use a preshave lotion that does get a closer shave. The last couple of shavers I've used have been Panasonic with the linear motor. It's wet or dry. When this on needs replacing I think I might switch back to the rotary type. The one thing to remember with electrics is you need to replace the blade and foil every so often. And clean them.

I've used a couple of Norelco's successfully. I have to use it everyday. If I skip a day, I've got to use a razor to shave it down to what the electric can handle.

40+ years using different electric razors and for the past 10 I have been using Norelco. Very quiet and close enough for me.

Many blade users never get to like the electric. It takes time to get use to the electric. Rotary is better IMO.

Okay I think I need a lesson....what does rotary mean???

The blades spin as opposed to vibrate side to side.

I have used Norelcos exclusively for 30+ years. They do a good job and last forever. The one that I'm presently using still has a cord!

I use battery operated ones. The batteries, which cannot be replaced, eventually wear out. I think my last unit lasted about 10 years. It still worked, but a charge was only good for one shave.

I've also worn out the blades on mine and bought replacements.

I hate electrics, my dad bought me one for my first razor, it was ok when I didn't need to shave every day, but when I started having to shave every day I went to a blade.

My thoughts...

Yes, rotary is better... (the circular rotating blades)
I once bought my DH a Braun (they are all the blade that vibrates side-to-side) The Braun is a good razor, but it is much louder, and the thing will vibrate your hand off!!!

Yes, Norelco has always been the best... (key word - BEEN)
My FIL and my DH have never used anything else.

However, a caveat... Norelco is now Philips... I hope that maybe the top of the line razors are still the best.... but they make some low-priced trash...

My husband bought one last year, it didn't work worth a darn.. took it back... He checked the reviews online, and found out that model has a lot of bad reviews. (This model runs less than $100.00 at most any store like Walmart.. it is the one that says larger shaving area - therefore faster shave... It didn't work at all...)

The one he has works fine, but is not as powerful, and the rechargable battery doesn't last as long as compared to the old true Norelco that was only like $30.00 when he bought it years ago. :confused3

Bottom line, unless anybody else has more input... If you want a good electric razor, you may want to shell out some money for one of the better models.
