Wondering if anyone has any experience with catching a taxi in Juneau to the Glacier? Are they readily available at the cruise port? Will it be easy to get one from the Glacier back to the boat as well? I just saw on one taxi company's website that they recommended pre-booking a taxi and wondering how necessary that really is?

In '03 we took the big blue bus. And in a 2014 article online (travelbluebook.com) I see it mentioned still.

"If you want to take the bus there from downtown Juneau, just walk along the waterfront until you see the bus terminal across the street. The bus will be called the Mendenhall or Glacier bus and it will be in big letters on the front of the bus. For about $2 each way, you’ll get dropped off about 1 mile from the visitors center, although it will be obvious which way to head.

"You can also take the Mendenhall Express blue bus for about $16 round trip. It’s right down on the pier and is a very obvious big, blue bus."

There are tours that you can book right off the dock as well as the blue bus. We booked a GREAT TOUR. It took us past the governor's mansion, to The Shrine of Saint Theresa. The guide was so informative. She took us to Mendenhall Glacier. We had an hour and a half there. In my opinion, better than the blue bus... Just google Juneau Tours.

When over, she dropped us back by the dock. We walked around a bit... past the old hotel, and there is the HUGE sundries store by the dock as well. Great for T-shirts and trinkets... I think it was the Great Alaska T shirt company (not sure).

We had our Whale Watching tour driver drop us at Mendenhall after our excursion. Then when we were done at the glacier, we just walked to the bus stop across from the visitors center and jumped on the first bus that came. There are two buses, the blue bus and the white bus. One runs on the hour and the other on the 1/2 hour. Luckily the white bus was arriving just as we were ready to leave. It was $10 per person for the ride back into town and we just paid the driver.

We were going to do it on our own, as well as the Mt. Roberts Tramway but it was pouring down rain and quite chilly when we arrived. So, I went to the excursion desk after breakfast and booked the Mendenhall Glacier tour. The price was very reasonable and they even handed out free Disney ponchos for all on the our. We had about 1.5 hours at the Glacier, which was plenty enough to hike to the base of the glacier next to the waterfalls and come back. The visitors center was a madhouse, packed to the gills (probably because the rain) so that was a no-go for us.

On the day we were there, the tramway was not visible because of such low cloud level (only very close to the bottom). We didn't go on.... one of my regrets!!! Oh well, a reason to go back.
