Hi,

We're thinking of settling down in the Memphis area in a couple of years (approximately in late 2006). Can anyone give me info about schools, housing, taxes, jobs, etc.? Thanks in advance!

Thanks...I haven't seen that website yet!

Well, I grew up in the Germantown area, right outside of Memphis so I can tell you about Germantown High and Germantown middle if you're going to be there. I don't know about Memphis as well, but my mom might be able to help you. I do know the malls and other stores pretty well though. :)

I live in Memphis and would be glad to answer any questions you may have.

As far as schools it can get pretty complicated. There are the Memphis city schools and Shelby county schools. They are always on the verge of consolidation. Some people like to move out to the county (suburbs) and send their kids to school because they feel they will get a better education.

However, the city schools have optional programs that your child can get into (if you do not live in the school district that you want your child to go to.) The optional programs are really honors type classrooms or art programs.

Some of the best schools are Grahamwood Elem., White Station Middle, and White Station High school. Colonial Junior High is a great arts school. The link below will give you info on all the city schools.

Our sales tax is 9.25% . We do not have a state income tax.
Right now the job market is down as I am sure much of the rest of the country is.
I'm not sure what to say about housing. There are a lot of great suburbs if you do not want to live in the city. Some of the better suburbs are Germantown, Cordova, Collierville, or Bartlett. There are a lot of newer homes in those areas. If you like older homes then Midtown area, Cooper-Young, or Central Gardens are all great areas inside the city that have very nice older homes. Not sure what your price range may be but there are also a lot of great middle class areas inside the city as well.

Let me know if you have anything else I can help you out with. :)

Hi DisneyRoys,
I'll e-mail you later...I have some errands to run that will take a couple of hours. Thanks for all your help.

I also live in the Memphis area, Collierville to be exact. It is about 15 minutes out of the city limits and is easily accessible by a fairly new freeway linking Collierville to the city. The schools in Collierville are great, my daughter happens to be starting in kindergarten at one of them. I know alot about Memphis and the surrounding area, so if you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi tigerfanrob,
I just got back...I'll be e-mailing you also! Thanks!

I lived there 31 years. IT SUCKS!!! Crime is high....property taxes are out of sight.....School system is one of the worst in the country. City government is awful......Unemployment is high...

I'm trying to talk the rest of the family into leaving that place. I think they are all about ready to bolt out of there.

They have a great winery about 45 min north of Memphis!!!! :D

My cousin moved to Covington almost 2 years ago and they like it. They both work at the Navy base in Brighton (I think that's where or something like that). They don't like Memphis either but they like the area they live in and work near.
