Looks like the only store in the Volunteer State will be closing forever on May 3. Wanna get your Swedish meatballs? Start eating them now…

IKEA’s sustainable future will NOT include the state of Tennessee.

I saw this the other day, and I have to say, it sucks. My husband and I used to shop at IKEA when we lived in California over 20 years ago, and we were excited when they finally opened here in Tennessee about a decade ago. We’ve been shopping there a few times a year for a variety of things. But now, after their recent remodel, they’ve downsized the store and removed the larger restaurant. It’s definitely a letdown.

Ikea has always been a great place for brainstorming ideas for room remodels as our kids have grown, and for stocking dorms too. The affordability is a big plus. We’ve also hosted Scout meetings there. When the girls were in Girl Scouts, we completed the Room Makeover badge at Ikea, learning how to budget, price, and measure items for fictional remodels. In Scouts BSA, we’ve used it for navigating (lol) and even for scavenger hunts.

IKEA certainly fixed what wasn’t broke when it came to the store layout.

I have never figured out why or how in the world IKEA got so big in America but people seem to like their furniture and it seems that they want to become big in America but for some reason IKEA has exploded itself in popular furniture store chains next to Ashley Homestore. Mom and I first saw an IKEA distribution center when we would drive to Disneyland and we wondered what IKEA was. And it was when we saw commercials that IKEA was a furniture store and I never knew that they were huge in America. I think IKEA wants to be like Wayfair and they try hard but I think people pay the big mega prices for their furniture because it's unique

Ikea makes affordable, quality build-it-yourself furniture at a decent price. My Ashley couch didn't even last 3 years.

Ikea has been around since the 1940's, WayFair has only been around since the 2000's and Ikea's prices are hardly 'mega'.

Wayfair is now branching into IRL… they opened a scattered number of Allmodern stores… as well as their other specialty brands.

IKEA has been around for decades. Wayfair is relatively new in comparison. They’re not in all markets, which is why you maybe unfamiliar with them. What’s nice about ikea is that they sell affordable build it yourself furniture and accessories. I don’t mind assembling my own furniture if it’s a quality piece or if it saves me enough money.

You never went into Ikea, did you? They don't have "big mega prices." They've always been known for their lower prices and built-it-yourself motto with simple styles. Their prices have definitely gone up, but they're still one of the cheaper options.

I'm a huge Ikea fan and used to live very close to one, now I don't have one in my state. I miss it. They have really great prices on simple household items, like dish towels, vases, serving dishes... I used to get a lot of that stuff there, as well as furniture.

Not to mention… those delicious meatballs…

Yeah, I'll miss it - not that I shopped there all that often, but it was fun to look around. I usually would only buy werid Sweedish candy and such, and the odd kitchen item. My friends would buy these glass display shelves there, and lighting kits for collectibles. The meatballs were overrated, but it is a blow to the local area for sure.
