i am pretty new to this digital photo thing. should i carry the dig camera with me or pack it in checked luggage? if i carry it will i have to remove the memory card? should the entire thing go thru the scanner or should i request that they not do that and then have them hand inspect it if necessary? if i check it, will it get banged around and damaged?

Yikes! NEVER put anything valuable in your checked luggage.

You can put a digital camera and memory card through the x ray scanner with no problems. It won't be damaged.

I might bring my digital camera and my 35mm. What do I do with the 35mm and film?

Never put anything valuable in your luggage. Take the 35 mm with you in your carry on. For the film it depends what speed you are using but the xray can damage it. I would have it in a ziploc bag to hand to the screener. When you finish a roll of film send it off for developing. The effects of the xray are cumulative so be careful.

I agree with the above posts...never put anything of value in your checked luggage. I'm not that knowledgeable about film but you may want to mail it your home before returning to avoid the x-ray at the airport and maybe mail it to the resort a few days before you depart...not sure how costly that would be.

Good Luck!!

1) Never put fragile items like cameras in your checked bags.

2) The x-ray scanners will not harm digital cameras, cell phones, PDAs, memory cards, or other digital devices.

3) X-ray scanners used on checked bags will completely ruin film of any speed - NEVER PACK FILM OR DISPOSABLE CAMERAS IN CHECKED BAGS! X-ray scanners used on carry-ons can damage film. For complete info on how they can damage film, and how to easily prevent it, see my web page on the subject:
