Memory Card Questions?

So excited, just got a D7100

I leave for WDW in 10 days and am ordering memory cards for the trip. Should I go with
two SanDisk Extreme Pro 16 GB SDHC UHS-1 Flash Memory Card 45MB/s? $40 each

or one SanDisk Extreme Pro 8 GB SDHC UHS-1 95MB/s and one 16 GB SHC UHS-1 95MB/s $60 for both

I shoot Jpeg and RAW and I'll have my laptop. I don't want to have to download each night. I'll be out very late every night.

I worry about how long it takes to download each card and also lag time when shooting. I'll have my D200 as a backup with lots of CF cards.

i think you need atleast the two 16gb cards. I shoot in Raw+ Jpeg also and with 16gb cards i get about 450 shots.

The 7100 should produce bigger files then my t2i so i would think less shots per card.

I also shoot JPEG and RAW with a 16mp camera and use 16mb cards. I get 376 shots with each card. This is just a guess but I don't think you will get more than 250 shots on a 16gb card with a 24mp camera. You may want to take a look at 32gb cards. I'm not a fan of Sandisk, so I use Transcend. I have had too many physical card breakages (never lost any data) with Sandisk. It really depends on how many shots you take a day. Have fun with the new camera.

It's so hard to judge what I'll need. My D200 files aren't as big and from what I've read the 95MB/s is the way to go for fps.

Two Extreme Pro 16GB 95MB/s is what I'll get and then download at night.

Now I have to figure out a remote....

Thank you! Hmm, maybe I should get another 16gb just in case. I shoot a lot but never really kept track as each trip is so different. I have quite a collection of SanDisk, Lexar, Kingston, PNY and Trancend CF cards. Never had a problem with any of them. I'll keep your SanDisk thoughts in mind and look for a Transcend in addition.
This is what I call an "almost solo" trip with just one son for F&G and SWW. My guess is I'll be shooting more than usual while testing out my new toy.

I wish I could find a 16 GB SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 95MB/s locally.

I'm using dual 64GB 80/40 MB/s SD cards in my D600. According to the counter on the camera, I will get barely over 900 shutters shooting RAW+FINE jpeg. I carry a 1TB USB3.0 Harddrive with me though, so I can get the cards dumped fairly quickly, and have never filled both. I keep some 32GB and 16GB cards in the bag just in case.

Canon user, here, so I'm not very familiar with the D7100. Looks like several others have given you opinions on the number and size of cards. I just wanted to make a comment on speed. I see you're planning to get the Extreme Pros, which are about twice the price of the Extreme. Is the D7100 able to take advantage of the 95 MB/s of the Extreme Pro over the 45 MB/s of the Extreme?

I probably couldn't find it again if you paid me, but I remember reading something about memory cards that spoke to the fact that most cameras can't take advantage of the ultra-fast memory cards that are now on the market, and that the only real advantage of those cards is in the speed of the upload to the computer. Even the computer can only take advantage of it if you have a USB 3.0 reader (or something else that supports that level of transfer speed). The D7100 can certainly use the Extreme Pro cards, but my question is whether they provide any actual increased performance over the Extremes in that camera.

I'm not sure if anyone could point you specifically to a test that compared burst capacity in the D7100 using 95 MB/s vice 45 MB/s, but for the price differential it would be worth a quick Google or two.

The 7100 can write at roughly 100MB/s, so yes, it could fully optimize a ultra-high speed card.

Suppose the price differential will indeed depend on the intended use of it though and whether it is worth the cost/benefit to the user.

Thanks, really good point. I was just reading about the difference this morning.
I found two reviewers that said the 95MB/s was a perfect match for the D7100. That it took care of the buffer lag time so many were complaining about. I do like to shoot in bursts at races so I think it might be worth it to go with the 95MB/s. Even though the price difference is.

I also have a D600, upgraded from the D7000. The D7100 and D600 are both 24MP, so file sizes are roughly similar, but obviously the D600 will be slightly higher. I use 64GB and a 32GB in the other slot, with another set in the bag. I shoot RAW+Basic JPG, as I don't really use the JPG as much anymore. And saving RAW to one card and JPG to the other. With that setup, I was around ~1,000 photos. Though, I found Nikon's counter to be on the conservative side.

So, for a full day, I would recommend at least 32GB cards. I did 4 parks in one day, and filled the 64+32GB. (extreme case, I know). You will have to download every night. That is so you are sure you have enough space for the next day.

(I don't delete any photos until after the trip. So, that does take up needed space. Don't want to miss the moment, while you are browsing on your camera.)

Great ideas! Lowering the Jpeg to basic will help. I normally use fine but it does require more memory. I should bring my extra harddrive too. It's a lot to carry. We're flying. Heck, I have my sherpa.. I mean son with me. He's young, he can carry some of this stuff.
