I saw my Uncle and Cousin over the weekend who were in Orlando recently during Memorial Day weekend. Their fourth visit. They said during that weekend, there were "hundreds" of gangs hanging out all day and night along I-Drive. Police were there watching but massively out numbered. He said some of the gangs members were quite aggressive and some intimated families trying to pass by. Wet & Wild was rammed solid with them. Now, my relations are pretty level headed and not ones to make a Daily Star type headline report! By Monday evening they had all moved on and I-Drive was quite again.

I have never heard about this 'gang convention' before. Anyone know if this was a one off or do they meet same time every year? It has put me off going around that time, even if I wasn't staying on I-Drive.

Just curious, but how did your relatives know that all of the people belonged to gangs?

What else would you call lots of groups of male youths hanging out in groups up and down I-Drive?

I'm not saying Bloods and Crips type gang's as I doubt they would know how to identify them even with watching a few seasons of The Shield.

Our second visit to Florida we spent 11 days in Cocoa beach, whilst there was a Harley Davidson and bikers convention ~ it was dreadful and instead of trying to keep them in one area of the Hotel they were all over the place, driving up and down pathways and taking bikes to bits on the walkways outside the rooms, when we complained we were told that there was nothing that they could do the hotel was full and they could not move us. It was very intimidating walking around the hotel etc., it did mar our holiday and we have never been back to Cocoa beach again since (13 years since).

Unfortunatly our DS was taken ill and rushed to hospital by ambulance, as they would only take me in the ambulance and DH does not drive the hotel mini bus took him to the hospital and when DS was discharged they were kind enough to send it to collect us, on our return to the hotel they had moved us to an upgraded room in a quieter area so that he would not be disturbed.

I don't recall anything in the news about "gangs" being in Orlando over the Memorial Day weekend.

"Bike Week" in February and "Biketoberfest" in October bring lots of bikers (motorcyclists) to Daytona Beach with spillover to Orlando. But nothing over Memorial Day weekend that I'm aware of.

I was at Wet N Wild on Memorial Day.

The park itself got very busy in the afternoon and there were lots of groups (gangs) of teenagers around. I also saw a couple of police officers moving through wet n wild as if looking for somebody. I didn't see any problems though.
I left wet n wild about 3 pm and there were about 12 police cruisers outside. There were also a lot of 'fancy' motors going up and down I Drive.
We went for something to eat at Golden Coral and again there were loads of police about and a police helicopter flying about.
I asked the driver on the I-ride trolley what this was about. He said that it happens regularly on Memorial Day and that someone had let off a couple of shots into the air. He said that the police now know that it is going to happen and turn up in force to prevent any trouble.
If this bothers you then I would just say stay clear of I-Drive on memorial day.
