Hi-

We are still uncertain whether we will buy at SSR or just purchase points as needed from members.

I hear about member benefits that do not necessarily carry-over to renters but I am not clear what they are.

Could someone spell out the member-benefits and/or the renting disadvantages so we can finally make the decision whether to purchase or not? THANKS

if you go to WDW every year or more - then DVC is a good buy.

if you don't then rent it.

there are restuarant discount 10% to 20%, golf discounts, this year we got an annual pass discount, their is free valet parking at other DVC resorts only, tours discounts, etc.

tell me what type of discount you are looking at and I will see if DVC has one.

Buying locks in you point cost year after year. Dues go up, but don't tend to go up much. You remain in control of your contract and reservations. All arrangements are between you and Disney.

Renting points gives you flexibility - rent 60 points this year, 300 next year. But, unless you are a member and transfer points, the reservation remains in control of the owner. You'll need to find an owner each year to rent from. There is a private party in the middle between you and Disney. And while points have remained remarkably stable in cost - if they still rent for $10 per ten years from now, I'll be shocked! (For one thing, I expect my dues to be close to that ten years from now).

Perks are (IMO) not worth buying for. They are subject to change or be pulled completely at any time. Right now there is a nice discount on APs.

Do you have to rent points through a member or does Disney rent points as well?

you rent points from a DVC member because it is cheaper.

you can definitely rent a reservation from Disney (CRO). just call and ask - or go make a reservation on their website...

Disney kepts between 3% and 5% of all their resorts - so this can rented at any time the resort does not need maintence.... plus when a member uses their points to exchange to any place except II - CRO needs to rent the villa so Disney has the money to paid the hotel....

plus CRO as 60 days has the right to rent an unused villa to the general public..... so most DVC stays full.... (this is a good thing!!! the money goes to DVC general fund - after CRO takes their share for renting it)

Well, it depends on how you can finance it, but I bet you could buy and use and then sell if you wanted too, and end up having spent less than renting alone. Of course a greater amout of capital will be tied up, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! At least then you can't spend it on something you'd enjoy less!

I'd also expect over the years rental costs to drift upwards as rack rates on rooms no doubt increase.
