Member Getaway Question

I am sure this has been asked before, but I have been searching the board and can not find enough info.

DH and I are considering buying into SSR - we are not DVC members yet. We are considering buying into Disney because we love Disney and plan to use most of the time for Disney. With that said I am also interested to know what types of places people have used their points outside the Disney Family Resorts.
How many points are usually needed? Is it greater than what you would use for a week at Disney (during the same time of year)? Is there a link somewhere so I can get more information? DVC is sending me member information and we will be touring the SSR model in October during our vacation, but right now I can't get enough information (I am addicted to Disney and DIS boards - it could be worse)

Any info about Member Getaway would be appreciated.

When we bought into DVC, it was with the understanding we could trade out. It may not be the best use of the points but we do it anyway. We have stayed at a couple of the Marriott timeshares- one in CA and one in SC. We have stayed at the Plaza in NY and the hotel in Washington, DC. The name escapes me. I have friends who have stayed at other locations. We like staying in a 4 or 5 star location and we know Disney has done the investigation. We know they only pick the best for exchanges.
We try and go to WDW for one vacation a year and trade out the other. I think we will try for Virginia next year. You can't go wrong joining DVC. It is the best way to vacation if you like staying in really nice places.
