'Tis the season for Saratoga Springs
As you prepare for the holidays, construction of Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, the newest Disney Vacation Club Resort is moving right along. Around the property, things are becoming noticeably greener as landscaping takes shape. High Rock Spring Pool is nearing completion, and construction of the bus shelters is under way. Inside The Carriage House (the main building), interiors are being painted, and installations at The Artist Palette have begun.

With so much to offer, Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is sure to become a family favorite. In fact, now is a perfect time to continue your family's Disney vacation tradition. Take advantage of our Saratoga Savings and give your loved ones a unique holiday gift they'll enjoy for years to come—a home away from home at this grand lakeside community. For more information, visit the Add to the Magic section of dvcmember.com and contact your Vacation Club Guide for more details.

Yuletide traditions
Just as Disney Vacation Club has a reputation for creating legendary holiday memories, the town of Saratoga Springs, New York—our new resort's namesake—celebrates the season in several special ways.

First, there's the Peppermint Pig™, a pink hard candy similar in taste to the candy cane, but shaped like a pig. In the Victorian era, the pig was honored as a symbol of good health, happiness, and prosperity. After the holiday dinner, Peppermint Pigs are broken and shared by all in hope of good fortune for the coming year. The tradition dates back to the 1880s, with the Frasier and Curtis candy store receiving credit for the festive confection. Today, Peppermint Pigs are made by Saratoga Sweets only during the holiday season and only in upstate New York. To learn more, visit Saratoga Sweets online.

What would the season be without a twinkling winter wonderland for all to see? During the month of December, a drive through Saratoga Spa State Park becomes a merry must-do. With more than 1 million lights in 100 beautiful displays, the Holiday Light Spectacular begins at dusk each evening and has become a treasured tradition in Saratoga Springs.

Two other Saratoga seasonal treats are unwrapped within the first week of December. First, there's the weeklong Festival of Trees at Saratoga Springs City Center, with almost 200 decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces available for purchase. Second, the Victorian Streetwalk takes place, recapturing a bit of Christmas past. Held along Broadway (the main street in Saratoga Springs), this one-day event features strolling musicians and carolers in Victorian costumes, horse-drawn trolley rides, open houses in downtown stores, refreshments, and more magical holiday fun.

On December 31, residents ring in the New Year with First Night Saratoga. Hosted by the YMCA of Saratoga Springs, the annual First Night event is a family-oriented New Year's Eve celebration of the arts. First Night began in Boston in 1976, providing the public with an alternative way of ushering in the New Year. Its mission is to broaden and increase a community's appreciation for the visual and performing arts.

For First Night Saratoga, over 30 buildings, churches, and storefronts become stages for musicians, actors, dancers, and artists. There's certainly something for everyone—from cooking demonstrations and art installations to musical performances and interactive storytelling—even a 5K race and marriage vow renewals! The evening is capped off with fireworks at midnight.

In May, Member families from all over the world will begin a new Saratoga-inspired tradition, as we welcome them home to Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. Whether it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other wintertime holiday or festival you celebrate, we wish you and your family a safe and joyful season.

Around the Neighborhood
Home sweet home
During the holidays, much time is spent baking tasty treats for family and friends. In that tradition, pastry chefs at the Walt Disney World Resort have been busy mixing, rolling, cutting, and shaping delicious displays packed with pounds of yuletide cheer. So even though you may be miles away from your kitchen, you'll be awestruck by what our ovens have offered.

Over at Disney's Contemporary Resort, a gingerbread village has taken up residence in the Main Building on the fourth floor by the Concourse Steakhouse. Kids are also invited to the Food and Fun Center for holiday cookie decorating, December 15-20.

To gaze at gingerbread on a 'grand' scale, hop on the monorail and motor over to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The life-size gingerbread house is 16 feet high and 17 feet wide. Over 400 hours were spent baking more than 10,000 pieces of gingerbread and 160 hours were spent decorating the spectacular structure. Perfect for gift giving, Santa lollipops, stolen (a German bread), and gingerbread houses, cookies, and ornaments may be purchased here.

Reverse your route with a stop at Epcot®. Inside Liberty Inn at The American Adventure, you'll find Santa's Bakeshop. Containing over 800 pounds of sugar and more than 1,000 eggs, Santa's Gingerbread House will enchant kids from 1 to 92. To satisfy your sweet tooth, Christmas cookies and hot and cold beverages will be sold.

Walk over to Disney's Beach Club Resort and take a lingering look at the life-size gingerbread carousel in the lobby. Ponder its 10 pounds of spices, 50 pounds of dark chocolate, and 100 pounds of icing as you explore the creation, searching for its three Hidden Mickeys. Miniature gingerbread houses, chocolate fudge, and stolen can be purchased in the merchandise shops.

On the other side of Crescent Lake, Disney's BoardWalk Resort also features a holiday display in its lobby. Using chocolate, sugar, and gingerbread, the folks at BoardWalk Bakery have set up a sweet scene that includes a five-foot-tall Ferris wheel, carousel, water slide, beach, and buildings.

The next stop on our seasonal safari is Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. A miniature African village made out of chocolate, gingerbread, and sugar has settled near the waterfall at Boma - Flavors of Africa. Architecture from all over the African continent is reflected in the houses and buildings on display.

And if you're heading south for the winter, Disney's Vero Beach Resort celebrates the centennial of Pelican Island with a tribute to America's first protected wildlife refuge. This special display, featuring both historical and environmental themes, is 100 years in the 'baking.'

Through the woods we go!
Enjoy a leisurely 30-minute carriage ride through the Walt Disney World backwoods through December 30. All rides depart from the Porte Cochere in front of Disney's Wilderness Lodge and will return to the same location every half hour between 5:30 pm and 10:00 pm (December 24 hours are 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm). Cost is $30 per carriage (tax included). Each carriage can seat up to four adults or three adults and two children.

For reservations, call (407) WDW-PLAY (939-7529). For same-day bookings, call (407) 824-2832. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to ride time. A $30 fee will be charged for no-shows or for cancellations within 24 hours. You will not be charged for trips that are cancelled and rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Ring in the New Year
Celebrating New Year's Eve at the Walt Disney World Resort? Here are some ways to honor the arrival of 2004.

Disney's BoardWalk Resort hosts a free, all-ages New Year's Eve bash out on the Village Green. Enjoy party favors and a live DJ from 7:00 pm to 1:00 am, weather permitting. Down at Atlantic Dance Hall, say hello to 2004 with a memorable evening of food, champagne, party favors, and entertainment. From 8:00 pm to 2:00 am, dance 2003 away with music provided by both a DJ and The Big Idea band. Tickets go on sale December 31 at noon, and may be purchased at the door. Just $30 per person, not a penny more! You must be over 21 to join the party.

During this kinetic street party, every Guest is treated to salty snacks, delicious desserts, and exciting music from Blondie, Sugar Hill Gang, and Jeff Kashiwa, plus a champagne toast and special fireworks spectacular when the clock strikes twelve.
