Mel's Unflashy June 2008 TR: Funnel cakes have fewer calories in FL. Updated 12/2!!

So glad your ds is doing better; anxiety is a beeotch and that's putting it mildly! I can't believe Vero Beach is like that, that just sounds sad. Wonder why Disney put a resort there--cheap land? We're going to Cocoa Beach for the day, so I hope their public areas aren't too bad.

On with the evening festivities!:dance3:

Mel Great pictures and wonderful, honest review of the resort! I have always wondered about this place. Now I know!

Despite all, it looks like you all did enjoy yourselves!

I'm with you, Mel. I was expecting something more exclusive looking, KWIM? :confused3 Looks like a typical beach resort. Personally I'm not a fan of the ocean or sharks! :scared:

I did enjoy your honest opinions on this place. Your boys look like they are having a fabulous time and BTW, you look just fine in your swim suit. ;)

Great update!! nice little twist for us!! :thumbsup2 I dont even remember you mentioning you were going to Vero Beach. I`m glad you got to check it out before you booked a whole week! I get creeped out from dirty tables and floors! :scared: I cant believe you had to rent a chair? shouldnt they be included? :confused3 you pay 20 grand for a DVC and you still have to rent your beach chair!!! dont get it....I dont understand the key card entry thing for the pool and the beach either....the slide looked pretty cool though!! :thumbsup2

This area, near Vero, was AWFUL. Frankly, I was completely disappointed. Vero was a virtual oasis of nice in a sea of BLECH.
Very interesting. I know a couple people who live/work in Vero and when I've asked them about it, they never had much to say. Now I know why!
The dunes prevent you from actually seeing the ocean from this point
I looove dunes! We don't have them here. :sad1:

100_1339.jpg
:rotfl2: OMG, if I saw that body board floating around in the water, I'd FREAK! :scared1:

There is NO way I’d spend a whole week here. There aren’t any other things TO DO there, besides the beach, pool and sharks. I would die of boredom here inside of 3 days. I didn’t care for the staff. I hated the keys to go IN AND OUT and I like the ocean fine but not if I have to go through that to get ONTO it! Thank goodness we visited this resort before booking it. I won’t be booking an entire week here if it’s up to me.
Okay, I have a solution for you: next time, come over here to the West coast for a couple days! We have over 30 miles of beach, made up of 11 municipalities, each with its own personality, ranging from quiet and residential to family-oriented touristy, to Spring Break-style F U N! Gorgeous white-ish sand beaches, calm, usually clear-ish water, lots of other activities and fantastic accommodations. Which, FYI, are at their lowest cost in summer, since that's our off-season. :thumbsup2

LAND SHARKS:lmao: :lmao:
Knock knock.
(In my best Gilda Radner voice) Who is it?
Candygram.
Oh no, you're that Land Shark I heard about on the radio!
No ma'am. Just a harmless dolphin.

:lmao:

WELCOME! What can I call you? Where in Worcester did you grow up!? I know the city really really well.....I practically grew up in Tatnuck Sq. My cousins lived on Wrentham Rd.MEL:banana:

Hello, my name is Kris and I love everything Disney!!
I grew up behind Holy Cross College.

Hey MEl, I finally am getting caught up. SOrry that Vero was such a disapppointment. Maybe you not getting booked there was a sign ::yes::

Wow, interesting report on VB. I have never been there so it is interesting to read your impression. I will need to think a bit about whether I want to visit VB. I am not a sit on the beach person. So, I think that I would get very bored.

hmmmmmmm................. i luv the beach , but thought vero beach would be more disney like!! it sounds like you did too.

Katt greeted me and I delivered Jo’s gift (a hug!) and my own.
Thanks for giving Katt my hug :goodvibes

Sara shot some pics of me and Katt for the Fockers! Here you go!
100_1293.jpg
Lovely photo you 2, I so didn't recognise you though Mel with your hair down :rotfl2:

Uh, no, Bob!! I am watching the bellhop giving this guy the eye! The bellhop approached him just as I said (loudly), NO THANKS. Bob was wondering why I had stopped moving forward. I hissed to him to stop pushing me, that the guy was NOT a taxi, GOD only knows where he was going to take us!!!
OMG, scary

Vero beach sounded like a huge disappointment, the card system sounds really annoying, especially if you're there for a week or more :headache: Also as Carrie said you had to rent chairs????

Love the pictures Mel.

Not up to your Disney Standards..
Ha ha.. If I was caught in a Swimsuit.. I would probably have done a distortion and show only my head...
Scott is the same way.. he loves me for who I am It's me that hates ME

Thanks! Eh...I don't care what I look like in the suit really. I'm far too old to be that self-concious. It's all about the inside, baby.

I loved the pictures Mel, it at least looked nice even if what you saw was not. The beach access does sound very annoying.
Thanks Lessa! It was pretty and the ocean was GORGEOUS. I guess a good way to describe it would be to say that it's "outside" was nice and it's "inside" was ugly...
The key card thing got old FAST.

Hi there! :wave2: Cocoa Beach is nice, I've heard. I think if you were in a traditional "beach area" it would be fine with more amenities etc. However, the resort was really the ONLY thing here... Thanks for the well wishes for SD. He's great now.

Mel Great pictures and wonderful, honest review of the resort! I have always wondered about this place. Now I know!

Despite all, it looks like you all did enjoy yourselves!
Jen, we did have fun! It was nice but I am simply trying to be as honest (IMHO) as possible so that people are prepared! I liked it, I just would NOT spend a whole week here.

I'm with you, Mel. I was expecting something more exclusive looking, KWIM? :confused3 Looks like a typical beach resort. Personally I'm not a fan of the ocean or sharks! :scared:

T, glad you enjoyed my honesty! YIKES SHARKS! I hate them!
Thanks, as I told Katt, I'm not that worried about how I look, I just hate this suit! I'm happy and fairly well-adjusted. Being a good person is WAY more important to me...Not that I'd mind being a few pounds lighter...:lmao:

Great update!! nice little twist for us!! :thumbsup2 I dont even remember you mentioning you were going to Vero Beach. I`m glad you got to check it out before you booked a whole week! Ok, how sad that I NEVER considered that we shouldn't have to rent chairs because we're members!!! You are absolutely correct though! That is annoying!
The key card thing was SUCH a PITA! I was really P.O'd about it!!!! But, it was more of a fact finding mission....now we know.

I loved the pics. I liked seeing Bob just bobbing.:rotfl:
Bob likes to Bob. He's funny. He was mad about me posting the pic of him and I. He said he looks fat. OMG. Not.

Very interesting. I know a couple people who live/work in Vero and when I've asked them about it, they never had much to say. Now I know why!

I had totally forgotten what was on those boards! We bought them in Gloucester, MA on our summer vacay last year. Obviously, excepting JAWS, you don't really have to worry bout sharks in MA....:rotfl2:
Well, you should have seen my face when Bob got those out of the van when we arrived at VERO!! :scared1: OMG. I almost had an apoplexy right there.
I think we will try the gulf next time. We honeymooned on Sanibel Island 17 years ago. I loved it! My IL's live about 20 mins. from Tampa so we've been out that way recently.

Hello, my name is Kris and I love everything Disney!!
I grew up behind Holy Cross College.
Ah, Southbridge St. area? My mom works over on James St. right near Webster Sq. and we rented an apartment on Airport Hill for a year (94-95).
I have to tell you that the thing I miss most in this life is Roast Beef Grinders from Ted's Pizza near the old Worcester Fair. I have them on speed dial in my cell phone in case I'm ever "home." What do you miss?
Papa Gino's is my second miss....:sad2:

Well...lesson learned...right???
Yep. Glad we went though....

Hey MEl, I finally am getting caught up. SOrry that Vero was such a disapppointment. Maybe you not getting booked there was a sign ::yes::
Could be, Janet! I'm so glad you're reading my TR!

Wow, interesting report on VB. I have never been there so it is interesting to read your impression. I will need to think a bit about whether I want to visit VB. I am not a sit on the beach person. So, I think that I would get very bored.
To be fair to Vero, we didn't do much except the beach and pool. Maybe there was ALOT and we missed it? I do know that they have daily activities for the kids you can sign up for, but we arrived late so they were full. (Though they seemed for younger kids than mine and it cost$$$$) I don't like the nickel and diming to death!!!

hmmmmmmm................. i luv the beach , but thought vero beach would be more disney like!! it sounds like you did too.
Me too, Rach! How you doing!?

Thanks for giving Katt my hug :goodvibes

Everyone keeps saying that. Don't worry, I'll wear it up when we see each other in a week or so....
Yes, I think I'll have to drop a line to Disney and ask WHY we had to pay 25 dollars for chair rentals....

Hi former Worcesterites! I actually grew up in Webster but spent a lot of time in Worcester since my father worked in the city and both my grandmothers lived in Worcester. They both lived in the Grafton St area. I went to WPI so I actually only lived in Worcester for 4 years. Mel, my sister lives in the Webster Sq. area.

How about an update where we drink alot? Ok. I can do that.

After our 2 hour return trip to the BWV’s we all managed to get showered and cleaned up. The boys had plans to play video games and maybe go rent a movie at the Community building. They ended up watching TWO. I think they watched National Treasure 2, but can’t recall the other.

I think I’ve neglected to talk about the C.B. It’s pretty cool for the kids. They are a smallish building out by the “quiet” pool. They rent pool noodles, board games, hula hoops, jump ropes, dvds and other things. They have video games to play there and also table tennis and air hockey games. The boys enjoyed hanging out there and it was literally right outside our door. The entire trip we pretty much let them go there and back without us because it was so safe. SD just had instructions to call us if he was leaving the room and then when they got back. It worked out great. :thumbsup2

Bob and I got gussied up and decided that our first stop would be the Bellevue room (which is a bar) located near the lobby. We have to pass this spot to go to the Boardwalk area so it’s not a big detour. The bar is sort of tucked off to the side. You can sit at the bar or at the tables and chairs scattered through the area. The only downside I can think of to this spot is that it seems to attract families with children. Now, I realize it’s Disney. I realize that people are here with their kids. I know, I know! But, that doesn’t mean that you have to bring them to the bar! But, sadly, people do. :sad2:

Bob and I ordered our first drinks. A raspberry champagne for Mel. And a delicious 12 year Oban (Scotch) Whiskey. The bartender, Allen, was really sweet and told us about how he’s worked for Disney for 20+ years!

100_1372.jpg

100_1373.jpg

We sat and enjoyed our first cocktails and talked about what we would do the next day. Our schedule included two days at Vero, though not consecutive days. We discussed not returning to Vero and offering the kids a visit to Blizzard Beach or back to Typhoon Lagoon instead. Though Bob enjoyed Vero more than I did, he still agreed that we didn’t need to go back!

The next round of drinks was a delicious Reisling for Mel and an icy beer for Bob!

100_1375.jpg

100_1376.jpg

We had to explain to Allen why we were taking photos of our drinks. He was shocked to hear that there was an entire group of people online who do Trip Reports and take photos of their food and drinks! I couldn’t believe no one else had ever mentioned this to Allen! I told him to look up the Disboards and search for his name or Bellevue Room. He’d be surprised!!

It was getting late so we decided to take a walk out to the Boardwalk to see what was going on. I think it was around 10 pm because I recall stopping at the surrey bike rental place and they said the last rental was at 10 pm. No dice for us! This evening was SO humid and hot. I think that it was the most uncomfortable weather of the whole trip. We meandered down the boardwalk and people watched for a bit.

Since the loud music, loud people and cigarette smoke coming from Jellyrolls didn’t appeal to us, we decided to try to find some food over in Epcot. The fish and chip stand in the UK is probably my favorite counter service in THE WORLD so I was pretty happy.
100_1377.jpg

Bob does NOT like fish and chips. He was sweet enough to watch me eat mine. While I munched on my yummy food, he made a trip inside to the bar for drinks.

100_1378.jpg

He returned with a Bass Ale for himself and a Strongbow Cider for me. YUMMY!!!

100_1379.jpg

When Bob returned with the drinks, there was something GLOWING on the cup! I didn’t know immediately what it was, but as he came closer I could see. That’s Tinkerbell!!!!! The ladies at the table next to us were so jealous! One girl said to her husband, “Why didn’t you BUY me ONE of those!?” Poor Guy! He didn’t know Bob!

Bob had been looking for this Tinkerbell ALL week for me. He knows I love her. He went inside to the bar at the Rose and Crown for his drinks and happened to spy some little girl with one on her glass. He asked the bartender for one but she put up a fight. She said that you have to order a kid’s glow drink. Bob said, I’ll pay whatever you want me to, but I need one for a very special lady. Awwwww, Bob. He is the most romantic husband ever. I heart Bob. Here is Tink in all her glowy (and non-glowy) glory.

101_0039.jpg

101_0043.jpg

Fearing that the ladies next to us might try to STEAL Bob or Tink from me, I told Bob we should go find him some food. We grabbed our drinks (this would be the NEXT round that Bob had purchased) and made our way back towards the gate (to BWV) And, of course, we remembered as we came down to the gate that they DON’T LIKE YOU TO TAKE BOOZE THROUGH THE GATE.

So, I broke the law again. Luckily I had a sweater over my arm. This is getting to be a habit....:tiptoe:

This was HS’s late EMH night so we walked back to the dock on the Boardwalk and took the boat across to the Studios. We rode with a sweet teenaged couple. The boy was so polite and he asked us what our favorite park was and other questions. They were going back to HS to ride ToT. They had ridden it over 20 times so far that day! Crazy kids! They were SO cute. Reminded me of us when we first started dating.... :love2:

So, we exited the boat and made it into the park to find it COMPLETELY packed! I’m talking shoulder to shoulder crowds. Really, the WORST I’ve ever seen it. Bob was starving by this time and I remembered a trick I’d heard someone mention on the DIS once. They said that if the lines were skeeery long at the CS places and you didn’t have an ADR for any TS places, you could walk into the 50’s Prime Time and sit at the bar and eat the same food as in the restaurant!!! Bob was all for it! :yay:

Our bartender was named Mario. He was very nice. I had already had my dinner in the UK, but Bob was nice enough to order onion rings for me. Yum. I didn’t order a drink here, the others were catching up to me....
Bob had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a cold beer. He wasn’t impressed with the food but the service was AWESOME. We’ll definitely remember this next time and just get drinks and appetizers. :thumbsup2

On the way out of here we noticed this:
100_1380.jpg

That is a ceramic poodle. It’s quite possibly the UGLIEST thing I’ve ever seen but here’s the funny part. Bob’s mom has one EXACTLY like it. NO kidding!! If I’m lying, I’m dying. ::yes::

We got a good laugh out of that. We decided to try for some rides. This is where the evening becomes less fun. I don’t know if it was just that it was getting late, or the crowds or the extreme heat and humidity but we both just pooped out. We got grumpy. And we could NOT get on a single ride. We went and waited for almost an hour for TSM. The line didn’t move in the whole hour. It was awful. Then we tried RnRC. Nope. Over a hour wait on the sign but you know that for some reason, when it says that at RnRC, it’s WAY more. So, we ended up on ToT. The wait there was for only 45 mins. I have never ridden this in the dark. It is way more scary in the dark. I loved it. After our one ride on ToT, we decided that was enough fun for tonight and went to wait for the boat back to BWV.
Shot this as we left...
100_1381.jpg

We left the park at 11:45 pm. We arrived back at our room at 1 am. The boats are SLOW....:boat:

We tucked in and slept like babies. Well, babies who snore and get up to pee alot.

Tomorrow Bob is taking SD to do the Segway tour at Epcot. And you guys are SO lucky because BOB is typing the update for that one, not me! So, you may have to be patient for a few days because Bob is very busy lately. He promises that you’ll have your update though.

Love Bob's romantic tinkerbelll! That is so sweet.

I liked the ugly poodle.

I did not know they did Segway tours!! Looking forward to your guest trip report writer :woohoo:

:creak,creak:

What a fun date night!

"babies who snore and get up to pee a lot" :rotfl2:

I think the Segway would be really fun; I'd worry I might fall over though, I'm not the most graceful thing....

Oh all the lovely drinks!!!! So what does the strongbow cider taste like? I am excited to eat at R&C but need to find my drink there too. ;) What a sweetie bob is!!! You 2 must be so adorable together...I guess I'll see in a few short weeks!!! Great update!

Bob could give 'How to be the best DH' lessons. I'll sign mine up right now. You are a lucky lady!!
