I am so scatterbrained, I can't find the thread where people were talking about melatonin for sleep. I bought a bottle of 3 mg today...please wish me luck. Insomnia is horrible.

My doc says 3mg for the babies and 6mg for the grownups!

Sleep well!

funny- I bought some for my 14 yo DS and he will try it tonight for the first time also. I hope it works for both of you

I started the other thread...Two nights using 3 mg. I have had the best sleep in months. I felt so much better yesterday and today-well rested and alert. I didn't even require my second cup of coffee mid morning.

Good Luck:hug:Sleep well

ETA--My doc said to start w/ 3 and move up to 6 in a week or so.

I am worried it won't work...I don't know if you remember on the other thread but I was up to 6 Tylenol PMs and it stopped working. I will post results tomorrow...hopefully it's sweet dreams tonight!:faint:

I started taking 3mg this week. So far it's not working. After a week I'll try the 6mg. Thanks for that tip. For years I've had problems sleeping and it's just gotten worse. For awhile I was taking over the counter Tylenol PM or Unisom but now I'm on Tamoxifen and can't take that stuff - so here's hoping Melatonin works.

Thanks for this thread. I didn't know I could take two pills a night.

My dd takes 3 mg and it works wonderful!!! Shes 14 and can never fall asleep~I'm the same way but didn't want to give her any sleeping pills so the doctor recommended melatonin. She is a different person!!! Grades are back up. I didn't realize how sleep deprived she really was, I just thought if she didn't sleep good that night the next night would be better but never was. Glad she recommended it.

My husband takes 3 mg of melatonin and swears by it. I have tried several times to take it, but one of the side effects of it is to cause extremely vivid dreams. Oh, boy! They were outrageously vivid! I had to stop taking it. Even when I cut the 3mg pill in half it still happened.
Sleep deprivation can certainly interfere with your life. Good luck with It. I hope it works well for you.

My DD14 started the 3mg three days ago, and for the past couple days she's been a LOT easier to deal with in the morning! This tells me that her sleep must be better :thumbsup2 She'll keep taking it, at LEAST 'til school's over and I don't have to worry about what time she's up, LOL!

Update: It worked. It took about an hour, but I went to bed when I started yawning. I was lying in bed and I could feel a sort of sedative feeling begin. I may have been awake for about 15 min more, which for me, is nothing short of a miracle. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the people who recommended this. I hope it continues to help. I am so thankful to have a good night sleep withOUT waking up at 2 and 3 in the morning.

ETA: I had no dreams that I can remember. Maybe it's a hit or miss thing with the vivid dreams, or maybe it has to do with what kind of day you have.
I was on Ambien for about 3 days or so and could not tolerate it because of the nightmares.

Another troubled sleeper here! Actually most everyone I know has trouble sleeping. I think it's our ages....mid 40's. Waking up at 2 or 3 for the day is not fun!

Wondering if anyone knows about any risks with taking Melatonin?

Thanks! And Sweet Dreams!;)

I started giving my son this a little over a week ago. He is sleeping great for the first time in his life. I have been telling the doctor for ages that he doesn't sleep well. He is only 6 but has never slept through the night. He now heads off to bed with out a fight and is asleep soon after. Why didn't the doctor suggest this to me? I found out about it from a friend and then saw people here talking about it.

it did not work for my son last night but he has a cold and was coughing. so I will try again next week.glad it worked for you california

If he is coughing a lot when he is lying down, trying to sleep, I have to share my favorite home remedy with you. I read it on here months ago. My DD had a horrible cough and it was way worse at night. No cough medicine helped. Even prescription meds didn't do anything. She coughed so much she couldn't catch a breath. Someone on here recommended putting Vicks on her feet and putting socks over it (so it wouldn't stain the sheets). I kinda dismissed this because it just sounded so "out there". I still remember that night. She could not stop. I felt so bad I was willing to try anything. I got the Vicks, made her sit up and told her what I was going to do. Her, being a teenager, resisted and did not want to do it because she thought it was "gross". I told her she had no choice, we were trying this. She almost started crying because she did not want to do this. I slathered the vicks on both feet, put socks on her and told her to lie down. She coughed ONE more time. By the time I washed my hands, she did not cough again the rest of the night. I was amazed. And it was not a placebo effect because she thought it was stupid. When she woke up the next morning, she was a believer. So, give it a try. It cannot hurt. I don't know why or how it works, but I swear, it did. Good luck. :goodvibes

Duplicate post...got an error message the first time, didn't think it posted!

Ok, what is up? It said I had a duplicate post, I went to the thread and sure enough, there was a duplicate post. So I erased this one. I saved it and then the original post was gone! I'm gonna try this again.

Ok, I'm going to try this again!

Hi Heather C. I'm a Heather C. also!

Here's a good article from the Mayo Clinic about side effects with Melatonin.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/melatonin-side-effects/AN01717

I did not have any of these...I know everyone is different. But I think practically anything you take has potential side effects. I would not let this info keep me from trying. I had amazing sleep and that just does not happen for me. I have had insomnia for years. Give it a try. I'm so glad I did!:cloud9:

Awesome thread. :goodvibes

Wow on the Melatonin. There are more times than not that I have trouble sleeping at night ... going to try this! :thumbsup2
