Meijer gift card question!

With all the speculation on Target's 20% off coupon being available for use with Disney gift cards, I thought I would check out the Meijer ad. Turns out, they are offering $20 Meijer custom coupons with every $100 in gift cards purchased between November 28-30.

Last year, I bought all our Disney gift cards at Meijer because I get 4% cashback automatically on all grocery store purchases, and also because you can buy Disney gift cards in $500 denominations so it was WAY easier than buying $4000 in $50 cards from Target. And this year I need $8000 worth.

SO - does anyone know if I can cycle these (ie - buy a card, get the $20 coupon, then use the coupon to buy another card, etc) OR if I can use multiple $20 coupons at one time in subsequent trips? The fine print says one coupon per customer, but I assumed that meant you'd only be issued one at a time (ie - buy a $200 gift card and you'll still only get one coupon instead of two) and didn't know if it affected how you could redeem them.

Thanks! pixiedust:

Oops, check the fine print! Coupons are only valid December 1-7th. So I can't cycle them. But I could buy a stack between the 28-30th and then use the coupons to buy the rest of them December 1-7th... Cuts the discount down to 10% from 20% - but still not bad with my extra 4% cashback!

Last year I used this same deal.....I bought $200 worth of VISA gift cards to purchase a Kindle, and that gave me coupons for $40 off my next shopping trip. So...the question is, could we buy VISA gift cards (to get the coupon), and then turn around and use THOSE to pay for the Disney gift cards, with the coupon??? On December 1st of course, when it becomes active. Thoughts??

Are you meaning to use those Visa cards to go to Target and buy them with the coupon on the first? My husband was just thinking that! Then if the Target coupon does not work on the gift cards, at least you just saved 20% at Meijer :)

So, at the best case scenario...

Buy $100 Visa gift card for $106 OOP(I think fee is $6), get $20 coupon
Use 20% off coupon along with gift cards
Buy $100 gift card for $80 of the Visa gift cards.

For the original $106 OOP, you now have $100 in Disney gift cards, $20 to Meijer, and $20 left on the Visa GC.

Savings = $34, or 32%.

REALLY good for me, as I do all of our grocery shopping at Meijer anyway, AND I was planning on Target BF, so I would not lose anything if it doesn't work.

I am going to try it with 4 x $100 Visa GC, for $424. Get $80 for Meijer and $500 for Disney.

Oooh, I'm liking this deal!! I need $2500 for my trip. Tell me how this looks:
I'm thinking I buy 25 $100 visa GCs and get 25 20$ coupons. Purchase $100 GC using coupon and $80 from Visa card. Do this 25x end with $2500 in Disney GCs and $500 to spend on anything else. So basically, $2000 for $2500 in GC or 20% off.
Target would still be a better deal with the red card but this would be a decent alternative.

I like this too...tell me if I am thinking correctly (and my math is appropriate) :)
I go to Meijer and buy $1300 in Visa gift cards, getting $260 back in Meijer coupons.
I take the $1300 Visa cards to Target with the coupon and buy $1600 Disney cards with the Visas and coupon.
I then use the $250 cash I would spend in grocery at Meijer on Disney gift cards, seeing as I have the Meijer coupons in place of it.
I then get about $1850 in Disney cards for $1300! Seems to good to be true...my math must be off!

We have a similar deal going on at Acme here in Philly. Here are some of the possible "flaws" I see in the above scheme:
  • 1.) It assumes that the 20%-off discount coupon that Target will be giving out on Black Friday will be usable for purchasing Disney GCs. That is something has is still to be seen. The wording on the coupon excludes "gift cards". Yes, I know that the Disney GCs are coded as "entertainment cards", but there have been recent coupons with similar language that have not worked for Disney GCs.
  • 2.) It doesn't take into consideration the activation fee for the Visa cards. You will pay around $6 per card to activate them. $1300 in Visa cards might require you to buy as many as 13-$100 cards, which would cost you $70 in activation fees.
  • 3.) The $20 coupon at Acme will expire within a week of being generated. Unless you plan to do a HUGE grocery shopping trip, some of those coupons may expire before you spend them all.
  • 4.) The Acme deal states that only one $20 coupon will be generated per GC purchase transaction. That means that if you purchase a $500 GC, you would only get one $20 coupon, not 5.
  • 5.) The Acme $20 coupons cannot be stacked, meaning that you cannot use more than one in a single transaction. This makes it difficult to spend large quantities of them before they expire.
Of course, Acme and Meijer do not have the same parent company, so the rules surround their deals may differ widely. However, when you're planning to spend such large amounts to take advantage of a deal, it's a good idea to make sure that you understand the rules completely. Please make sure that you read the fine print in the circular and on the $20 coupon. You don't want any surprises!

Yes, the $20 coupon expires one week after it is printed. It is valid from Dec 1-7th only.

The other consideration is that it will only print one $20 coupon at a time, so if you want to buy $2500 in GCs, you'll need to make 25 transactions. But I still think it's worth it and I'm going to go for it! :)

I havent seen the coupon...can you use the $20 without purchasing a certain amount? Can I go buy a $20 disney gift card with it?

Just checked out our local Meijer ad, it states selected gift cards and gives Panera, Chili's, Tim Horton and Domino's as examples. If they ran this same promotion last year, what gift cards were included?

You would need to read the fine print on the coupon. The Acme coupons specifically exclude gift card purchases.

Grr, Any way of finding out the whole list of gift cards it excludes??
Also, could I buy gift cards to get the $20??

I was thinking about buying gift cards too. Then I could turn around and buy one large visa card, taking away so many activation fees

You HAVE to buy gift cards to get the $20. It is not for all purchases of $100, it is specifically gift card purchases only. I do not think Meijer gift cards count, only the third-party cards, although I have not seen a list from last year or this year which says who is included. I *suspect* it would be all their third-party cards, honestly, given how the displays are set up in store and at the registers.

And yes, you can use that $20 coupon to buy another gift card. Meijer treats them just like any other form of payment.

Oh, I see what you are saying here. Buying multiple Meijer gift cards to purchase one large VISA gift card. I don't think that will work. :( But you never know! Fingers crossed...

Did anyone do this?? I put all my faith in the Target deal so didn't bother. Meier is still offering this same deal, only with $15 coupons instead - but they're good for the next 2 weeks. The coupon specifies that it cannot be used to buy more gift cards.

I am going to go today and buy $6000 worth and get $900 worth of coupons. I will use those coupons over the next couple weeks for groceries and things we would need anyway.

Just wondering if anyone tried it on BF and had any insight or tips to share?
