Meeting characters in DLR. (WDW vet.)

It depends on what you mean by weird...in some ways, it's no different than meeting Mickey or Minnie or any of the other characters. These characters just happen to be Cars. They're generally almost life-sized (Red is smaller than a typical fire engine, but he's bigger than the other cars in Carsland).

But I can’t hug them lol
Or I mean I could but...

I'll second Minnie's breakfast. we usually meet at least 8 characters, sometimes 10-12. And lots of less frequently seen ones like Rafiki, Max, a penguin from Mary Poppins, Pinocchio and Gepetto, Rabbit, Piglet, white Rabbit, Honest John and Gideon (not all of them at the same time, but we've met all of them at various times).
Critter country usually has Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore, sometimes Brer Fox and Brer Bear. Aladdin, Jasmine and Genie in Adventureland. Sometimes the Fairy Godmother is around the castle as well. Mary Poppins and Bert can be anywhere from the entrance, to main street, to wandering around Fantasyland.

Does DLR have pre-park opening breakfasts? I’d love to do Minnie and friends but I hate to take out touring time. We are going at a very busy time.

Yes and no...usually, on mornings when there is MM/EMH, the first breakfast ADR is for about 10 minutes after the start of EMH/MM (so about 50 minutes before regular park opening). On non-EMH/MM days, the first breakfast ADR is usually about 20 minutes before the park opens. This can vary, so check the days you're there to see that day's schedule.

Starlord and Gamorra do not officially meet after the Dance Off. They walk back slowly to a cast exit door after - they give kids high fives and that. If you are brave enough to ask for a selfie they seem to let you take one.
When I watched the dance off they stayed behind to take a group photo with the people who participated (and went "on stage"). They don't stay to do a one-on-one meet and greet.

No group photo when I went, and I saw it a couple of times.

This is the picture I got with Gamora when she walked in my direction and I asked her "Gamora, could we take a picture please?" You can tell I wasn't exactly prepared for her to stop. ;) But she did.

Is there any expert for DLR similar to Kenny the Pirate for WDW?

Kenny has some good information on DLR too. Also, Disneyland's app has character listings and where they will be. Note- it is not always accurate, you can't completely count on it, but it is helpful. Note- unlike at WDW, at DL the characters often roam around and they do not always stop to meet and greet in the same spot. If you go to the area where the app is showing a character is going to be and can't find the character- ask a CM around that area- they sometimes have a really good idea where that character likes to hang out. Also- we definitely have seen characters pop up that don't show up on the app.

Is there anything like Characterpalooza?

Not to my knowledge

Is it even possible to meet all the princesses (and one queen) in DLR on a typical visit?

In our experience, it has been pretty difficult to meet all the Princesses in one visit at DLR. Sleeping Beauty is surprisingly hard to find considering she actually has a castle at DL. Because of Pixar Pier- the one Princess Character meal- Ariel's Grotto just closed. That was the best place to pick up a variety of Princesses (I think that is the only place we have seen Mulan at DLR and we did run into Pochahontas there once). No word of whether they are going to put a new Princess meal somewhere. As popular as it was, I would certainly hope so. There is Princess Fantasy Faire, and usually a couple of Princesses rotate meets right outside of Fantasy Faire. Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff can usually be found at CA. We ran into Pochahontas by Frontierland last summer, but that was the only time we have seen her outside of Ariel's Grotto. Tiana can be hard to find but she sometimes hangs out around New Orleans Square.

On the bright side, we have seen Snow White's Evil Queen every trip for years! She is generally not hard to find!

Also- the lines typically aren't as bad as WDW- but I don't know what the Princess meal closure will do to that. We typically only wait 10 minutes for Princess Fantasy Faire in the afternoon in July (just don't go right as the Princess show just across from it is getting out because people go straight from there to the line. Last summer when we were there Moana's line was consistently insane. DD just had to meet her so we waited 60 minutes. Elena's was also consistently long, but I think we got out in 20 or 30 minutes. Like at WDW- you want to get there a little bit BEFORE the characters come out if they have sets. Seems like Moana and Elena were out all day and just taking breaks. We were able to hit all the Marvel characters without much of a wait with just a little planning ahead as they were meeting in sets and we found the posted times on the app or maybe Kenny's website- or found timing tips here on the boards.

Are there any characters that are easier to meet at DLR than WDW?

Yes!! Evil Queen; Cruella; Captain Hook; Bert; Mad Hatter; Oswald and recently some of the Marvel Characters (last summer it was Groot, Gamora Captain America, Spider Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye for meet and greet lines and you could see Starlord/Peter Quill at the dance party and Thor occasionally walked about- those have changed up some and probably will again before this summer).

The first time I saw Cruella out for a meet and greet which was on one of our first family DL trips and back before we had been to the WDW MNSSHP, I screamed and went running towards her like a 5 year old and I thought DH and DD were going to fall over they were laughing so hard.

Also- I would absolutely recommend Minnie's Breakfast. The minimum number of characters we have met there is 7 and we have met up to 12. They have some characters that you about always see there like Minnie, Captain Hook, Max (Goofy's son), Fairy Godmother, and you can run into Pooh,Tigger, Eeyore, Chip and/or Dale pretty regularly. Every time we have been there we have pretty much had a fun surprise character or two. Last summer it was Suzy and Perla (the mice from Cinderella), in past years we have seen Brer Fox, Penguin from Mary Poppins, Gepetto, Tweedle Dum (or was it Dee); Pinnochio; Mad Hatter and Alice, and I'm sure more that I'm I can't think of off the top of my head.

Also- back at Mickey's house- you never know how he is going to be dressed. It could be regular Mickey, or Sorcerer Robe mickey, or Bandleader Mickey or Steamboat Willie! Don't trust the wait time posted- we have seen the sign say 60 minutes when it was 5 or 10. Also, if you get in there and it is a really long line- leave and come back later- it really fluctuates and we have almost always been able to catch it at 15 minutes or less.

Hmmmm - are characters even as big a deal at DLR as they are at WDW?
Are they possibly a bigger deal?

They are a different deal, and can be more fun. We love that there are almost always surprises. Also, they have some structured meet and greets, but many are not as structured at WDW and they don't always have a CM handler with them. There are several characters that roam and play instead of doing formal meet and greets. For example- last summer we found where Peter Pan was going to be on the app and got there about 5 minutes before he was scheduled to come out. When he got there, in Peter Pan style he announced that he thought formal meetings were stuffy and boring and he didn't want to just stand there while picture took pictures of him, he wanted to play. He then proceeded to play Hide and Seek and Red Light/Green light with the kids in the area and any adults he could get to join in for half an hour. DD had an absolutely wonderful time, and towards the end he did sign some autographs and pose for a few pictures with the kids that had stuck around and played with him. Also, sometimes Mary Poppins and Bert simply stroll. If you stroll along with them they might sign a book or pause for a photo. Mad Hatter and Alice sometimes stop and hold "unbirthday parties" instead of formal meets. It can really often be a lot more fun than just standing in a long line for a quick picture and autograph, although you will find some characters around DLR with formal lines too. It is a good mix.

Who has FastPass/MaxPass options?

Haven't seen anyone with a FP option since Anna and Elsa were new. Can't speak to maxpass because it started in the middle of our last trip so we did not use it.

And most importantly! - Is Marie the Cat anywhere at DLR?[/QUOTE]

Sorry- but we have been at DLR every summer for the last 8 years and I don't think we have ever seen Marie there.

When are you going? If it is summer, it may not be as bad as you are expecting (unless you are going the last few days before the Socal pass summer blackout). Also, the first couple of hours in the morning are usually great. I don't think they usually do pre-park as the park usually opens at 8:00 am. with early hours at 7:00 a.m.- at least in the summer. I would recommend booking between 10: 00 a.m. and 10:45- that way you get a couple of hours of short lines first. Minnie'si is our favorite character meal from both WDW and DLR. It has more characters and it is not standardized so you still have surprises of who you might see!

It's probably one of those things that varies. There was a photo CM standing there waiting and ready, so maybe it depends of they have someone ready. Or maybe they just did it the day I was there and it didn't go well and they immediately stopped.

Also, around 2:30 or so the Mad Hatter and Alice play musical chairs with guests at the Coca Cola Refreshment Corner on Main Street. You can see Tinkerbell and the Fairies at Tink's area (going from Main Street to Tomorrowland), and sometimes you might find the Mad Hatter, Alice, and the Queen of Hearts playing trivia games with guests. I've also seen Mary Poppins and Bert do an impromptu visit in that area (leading to the Matterhorn from Main Street). Also, sometimes the princesses are by Snow White's wishing well or the bridge by the Fantasy Faire area.

Sometimes the band that travels with Mary Poppins rides the carousel with them while playing their instruments. We have also ridden the carousel with Beast and Belle riding directly behind us. Lots of great character interactions happen in Fantasyland. Peter Pan and Gaston are my favorites, they are hilarious!

This sounds so fun and so much different than at Disney world!

We are going to be there 6/11-6/20.
It looks like high crowds then, but we don’t have a lot of wiggle room.

Maybe I missed it in this thread but there is also Princess Fantasy Fair at DL where you can watch the princesses act out their story in a short play and also there is a formal M&G there. I have seen one story but have never done the M&G.

My kids were all boys and they never had much interest in M&Gs except for Star Wars. I have never done a character meal LOL! This June we will be there (same dates as the OP :) ) with our granddaughter on her first trip (she will be 3 and 1/2). She is over the top into Princesses (especially Anna and Elsa) as well as Minnie Mouse. I am just starting to educate myself on all of this.

We are already planning the Plaza Inn breakfast because that has Minnie. But this thread has been great!

Marie was in Toontown on Wednesday for Toontown’s birthday! Scrooge McDuck and the girl chipmunk and a bunch of rares were out.

But normally, no, you can’t find her.

Regarding Marvel, Thor and Loki are out within the next week or two, replaced by Black Panther and possibly one more. Spider-Man and Captain America are sticking around.

Wow
My thread led to helping out HydroGuy? I’m tickled. ;)
(And just don’t get too nervous if you see a family of 8 following you around everywhere because you are the expert...)

I try and tell that to my own family but for some reason they never seem very impressed. :scratchin

Hahaha!
After our last (highly successful) trip to WDW my then 14 yo son told a friend of the family he was sure that if his Mom had enough time she could take over the world.
Now we are trying the west coast... I’ve got a lot of pressure on me! :scared:

I enjoy following Casey at Disneyland Daily. She has a fun Facebook page or you can check out her website https://disneylanddaily.com/

Tom Bricker has the Disney Tourist Blog and covers both DLR and WDW. He also has a FB page and website. http://www.disneytouristblog.com/

My family has never been fans of character interactions, so I can’t help you there!:goodvibes

Check out disneyland daily, she’s at DLR about once a week. Her website has some great advice and touring plans. Also listen to some ( or a bunch) of the dis unplugged Disneyland podcast, lots of great info. I also appreciated hydro guys thread.

As far as characters go I had all boys with me. Launch bay was great, saw the storm troopers a few times. It was so relaxed at DLR compared to WDW. Now the best part for me during our trip: it was our last day my youngest wanted to meet Oswald. We were at Disneyland so we headed down Main to to go to DCA. My youngest spotted Pluto ( another favorite) and started walking towards him (Pluto was alone) some girls jumped in front of my son when he got close. Pluto put up his paw towards my son indicating he was next. After the girls were done Pluto took my son by his hand and walked him down Main Street, skipping and playing having a magical time. Then took my son to Daisy who danced with him until it was Minnie’s turn . It was so amazing and I’m sure that doesn’t happen everyday but WOW. I was smiling thru my tears.

Minnie waved bye after her interaction and we went to DCA and waited just a few minutes to meet Oswald.

Hope you find some similar magic!

I'm loving Disneyland Daily! Thank you for the information!!!!

One character no one has mentioned yet who's not in WDW is Kristoff In the Frozen meet for Anna and Elsa there's two rooms. First room is Olaf and Kristoff (not necessarily both of them though, sometimes neither one is there) and second one Anna and Elsa.

Dr. Facilier was roaming New Orleans Square in November, pretty much saw him every day. I was even lucky enough to run into Jack Sparrow near the rafts to Pirates Lair one morning.

Kristoff would be a lot of fun for my kids.

But I can’t hug them lol
Or I mean I could but...

We will most definitely hug them!!!! I love CARS and especially CARS 3 characters.

Marie was in Toontown on Wednesday for Toontown’s birthday! Scrooge McDuck and the girl chipmunk and a bunch of rares were out.

Black Widow and Hawkeye for meet and greet lines

We haven't seen Marie since 2011. Come on, Disney!!! Get with the program! She and Bolt are our favorites.

And Black Panther would be decidedly cool. My teen sons are so stoked for that movie. We love Marvel and when we first floated the idea of visiting DLR last week I had zero knowledge of meeting Marvel. And my DD 13's favorite character is Hawkeye and DD 12's favorite is Black Widow. While none are guaranteed, it will be a hoot to hunt for them.
