Meet this Kindergarten Teacher!

With respect, I don't agree that torn/sloppy clothing is the same as what he did. That's old school way of thinking; almost down to a T.

Of course an interviewer could still judge you and choose not to hire you but in today's age tattoos aren't just seen as "you don't care about your appearance do you" (the eye dying like I said is quite extreme still) like they used to be. though facial tattoos are on a more gradual acceptance here. I don't disagree that an employer may choose not to hire him and there's legally nothing wrong with that. But ethnically I think the tide is shifting. Snap judgements are snap judgements. We're becoming better at not making those, we've still got a few more generations I think before it really is prevalent though.

The "old school" way of thinking is not always bad. Also, not all tatoos are created equal - the same for clothing choices. I might not think too poorly of a guy who interviews and his tie clashes with his suit just a little versus a guy who is wearing torn up jeans. A few tatoos wouldn't affect my judgement as much as what this guy has done, and there is a difference. There are degrees to things and we don't have to accept everything outright. I am also not saying there is anything wrong with an employer who does want to hire him - it's entirely their decision.

I didn't say it was bad. It's just old school. We are becoming more progressive as a society in many ways. There will always be resistance, there will always be a line that still doesn't get blurred. But like it or not we don't assume that tattoos mean you don't care about your appearance, that's exactly what your torn/sloppy clothes comment was meant to do. And I very pointedly said facial tattoos and the eye dying are still extreme. On the other hand maybe we shouldn't try and discuss all things appearance by going into a discussion over a tie clashing, torn jeans and all. It's all just a game of "what ifs" that only serve to reflect how someone is making a snap judgement about someone's ability to do their job and discussing that based on their sense of fashion :rotfl: not sure that's about degrees/or being equal so much that maybe the interviewer is spending too much time on that and not enough about looking at the person's qualifications.

I'm going to bow out of this thread, so please don't take offense. I appreciate the discussion though! :) :)

How the person looks shouldn’t impact their ability to teach or influence. If this is really a problem, then you can argue that overweight teachers shouldn’t teach kids as it would lead to childhood obesity.

But it does, especially if the class is small children.
He chose to make himself look less human and more demon/monster/alien by completely covering his natural skin with ink and tattooing his eyes. For older kids not really an issue, but for small kids it could be pretty frightening.
That is not even close to a teacher being overweight, so no you can't argue that.

the dude seems motivated to teach children, which is a lovely step above many teachers I know of who are just surviving through their classes until they can retire. ;)
no offense meant to teachers who actively love their jobs (i haven't met enough of you)
i would want him in my school, to show diversity and inclusion and that your outside doesn't always match your inside. Tattoos are just decorative, it's not like the dude is spending hours writing anarchic manifestos and memes, and participating in a hate group. yet it's amazing how many non-tattooed people doing just that on facebook alone today, are flying under the radar for being racist, homophobic, hate-filled, poltically-partisan and divisive>!

Sure I can. What behaviors are you okay with your teacher providing to your kids? This teacher is saying it’s okay to be different. An overweight teacher is conveying it’s okay to overeat. The Chinese won’t let you adopt a kid if you’re overweight, so it’s definitely a problem.

This was in France not China, and I'm not talking about his behavior.

OMG, when I looked at the picture I found it to be shocking and yes I could very well see how students of any age would or could have problems with this person being their teacher. He looks like a demon or alien that you would see in a movie not someone you would meet in everyday life. I know a pp indicated this was an older persons view but WHY would he do this to himself and how could he NOT expect to get some negative reactions...if he's not happy about that he has no one but himself to blame.

And we're going to let China influence how we deal with adoption? Not sure how this is even relevant to the topic at hand.

As far as a person being obese, that could be caused for other reasons than overeating. You really seem to have a very negative point of view to persons who may be overweight. I thought you didn't think we should judge based on the way a person looks...guess I was wrong. You seem to have a problem with people who are overweight.

I wouldn't have a problem his tattooed face (looks stupid but hey whatever floats your boat). It's the eyes that bother me. Those are truly frightening.

When I really look at him I see a possible real issue for child development. Kindergarten can mean many ages... also infant and toddler for european countries.. When speech is not so developed one tends to focus on eye contact, mimics and facial expression. when I look at that face I am not sure what to read or what he is expressioning. KWIM?

If having that kind of appearance is what's important to this man, I wonder what else is wrong with him?

If you want a job, you have to adhere to certain requirements. Part of that includes projecting yourself as a professional.

I can respect and understand your viewpoint though I do not agree with the life decision part. Hopefully you can respect and understand that viewpoint as well :)
I see you walked away from the thread, which I understand. As for this post, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Facial tattoos are going to limit your job prospects in some industries. Visible tattoos anywhere are against our policies at work and many other places have similar policies. It is what it is.
Well, both King Edward VII, and Jennie Jerome (Lady Churchill) - Sir Winston Churchill's American mother - were tattooed.

And today grandmothers and granddaughters bond together with inking, and lots of people in the pews in the Bible Belt have it done confidently.

But the issue really is placement and visibility, and some ink is really so 'in your face' - literally....
