Can he teach? Is he considered a successful one? Sounds like he was teaching for a while and at a private school to boot (first tattoo at 27, let go from a different school at age 35). It doesn't mention if other kids over time had issues, wouldn't you think if that was the case it would have been mentioned? Unless he just got facial tattoos. But the article said the complaint occurred from a family whose child he didn't even teach, so really we're going on appearances only? Hmm I don't really agree with the ultimate decision. From the article it said "All of my students and their parents were always cool with me because basically they knew me" I do understand how an appearance such as his could startle or frighten someone but it sounds like the families he actually taught didn't have an issue with that. Bless them for seemingly being able to see past an appearance. Would be lovely if more could do that :)

I feel like he doesn't make sound life choices.
In the article is "he hoped to show his pupils that they should accept people who are different from the norm. "Maybe when they are adults they will be less racist and less homophobic and more open-minded," he said."

I guess his hope is lost on some people.

(I did the underlying)

I mean thats a great statement and all but I assume he's an intelligent person who fully understood what would happen if he tattooed his entire face(and eyeballs) while teaching young children. Theres a huge difference between being open minded and understanding the consequences of one's actions. Even if the actions aren't "wrong" they may still have impact. A truly open minded statement would be a statement from him saying "I understand why I lost my job but thats okay because this is something I wanted to do for myself."

Glad you posted this OP. I saw this article and was really hoping someone started a thread on it on the Disboards!

I wasn't talking about the guy and his choice. I was talking about your very pointed comment of
I feel like he doesn't make sound life choices.

You made that based on his appearance. Goodness me, I thought we were well beyond that point in making these sorts of assumptions about people such that you did. Not liking something and saying someone isn't making sound life choices are two ends of a spectrum.

I'm just wondering if the kids saw him and said "Sacre bleu!", because they're French. Tattoos, teachers, the rest is incidental.

Uhhh . . . call me Judgy McJudgerson on this one. Nope, just a big no from me on teaching. (FWIW, my 12 year old dd just said he should not even be teaching high school. She was freaked out.)

He certainly could be a lovely individual, and I would like to look past his appearance, and I possibly could if he wasn't teaching. To me (and you can say I am wrong, that is cool, but I have a right to my opinion) teachers are role models setting an example for our youth. Having a face covered in tattoos and surgically blackened eyeballs is not my idea of a role model. :confused3 IDK, that is just me.

He has every right to do what he wants with his body -- but his employer has the right to do what they see fit. He was scaring children, and likely some adults too.

To his statement on being open-minded ... personally, this isn't close to the same category as racism, homophobia, or disability. Those are traits someone has no control over. Full face tattoos and blackened eyes you make a conscious choice to do. Not the same, imho.

Maybe in time people will look past it, but for me it is a no.

We actually went through a situation like this personally when my DS was small. He has Asperger's; he is on the Autism spectrum, but is very high-functioning. (He's a college graduate now.) This incident happened when he was 4.

In our case the person whose appearance terrified him was a hairdresser. He didn't love getting haircuts in the first place, but we had to sever a relationship with a shop that we had successfully been going to for 2 years at that point. They hired a new stylist who had a large number of facial piercings and tattoos, and though I'm sure she was a nice young lady, her appearance, especially the piercings, absolutely terrified DS. The first time he saw her, he jumped out of the styling chair he was in, then ran screaming into the back room of the shop and hid under the sink, where he wrapped himself around the drainpipe. It took me 20 minutes to pry him out of there and carry him out of the shop, still screaming. After the second time we encountered her, he flat refused to ever enter the premises again. (I actually had to ask her NOT to try to calm him down; she didn't realize that she was "the monster" he was scared of, and kept trying to ask him what was wrong, which, of course, just made it all that much worse.) It was easy enough to find a new hair salon, but if it was an assigned public school I'm not sure what we would have been able to do.

I'm all for inclusion, but when you alter your body in such as way as to make yourself look somewhat nonhuman, working directly with small children and/or the developmentally disabled is probably going to no longer be a realistic occupational option. They often just don't have the capacity to easily stay calm whilst learning to get past the idea of "scary" things. Stinks, but actions can have consequences that all the goodwill in the world can't prevent.

Unstable. He had the whites of his eyes surgically turned black, along with the face tattoos?

And he is intentionally trying to appear sinister in that picture in a story that is supposed to defend his actions. I am sorry. He just seems like someone I wouldn't want to be alone with my children.

I feel he really needs attention in an immature kind of way. Just something off with him. I would need to follow my gut.

Here is a different picture of him. In my opinion, he is saying: "Look at me! Please give me attention." Just not a good fit to lead children of any age.

I never like to judge anyone because it happens to me all the time, with that being said he made the decision to look like that himself, so he can't be too surprised by their decision. I understand his message of acceptance, but covering your face with tattoo's, and making your eyes look like a vampire or demon isn't the correct or sane way to go about it. Especially if you teach children! And there's nothing wrong about having tattoo's and being a teacher, but when you cover your face and head, then I feel that's a problem and doens't need to be around children. Granted he could have a heart of gold, and be one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but first impressions are important, and you'll never be taken seriously with that appearance. I couldn't even imagine my daughters having him as a teacher, I mean parent teacher conferences would sure be interesting! 🤣
