Medicine taking (or not taking) five year old

Can you try letting her suck on a popsicle just before she takes her meds? Sometimes the cold freezes the taste buds so the meds won't taste so "icky". I did that with my 2 DS and it worked!

DS5 had one ear infection after another this past winter. One particular antibiotic was very nasty tasting. He also has a pretty strong gag reflex, so even a smidgen of medicine would make him sick. Finally, the Ped. looked up a pharmacist who could make the medicine in suppository form. It's an expensive solution, and not many pharmacists are trained to do that.

Funny I posted on this thread this morning and my daughter just got back form the Dr and has to take Zithromax....She picked chocolate flavor but it wasn't compatible with this medicine so she went with apple this time! Its only like 2.50 or so extra.

I tried to offer syrup snd her response was, "mom, that just sounds gross". I will try the popsicle tonight. Two more doses left today! I think she can take them together, so I will freeze her tastebuds and then give both if it works.

About the suppository thing, add to the list of hospital trauma a hesitant nurse and a suppository- "Let's just do it while you are standing then you can go on your walk, nevermind the bed is two steps away." In case you all wanted to know, her rear end muscles are very stong, she is no fool!

:scared1: :faint:
Oh, dear!

Poor baby, it sounds like she has been through a lot. :(

We used to give a spoonful of vanilla ICE CREAM after any particularly obnoxious meds (the prednisone type meds just taste NASTY) and that would work. Whatever treat is her favorite is what I would offer after each dose...candy, ice cream, cookies, etc. The poor thing has been through a pretty traumatic experience at her age and I personally would be extra accommodating in helping her get through the meds.

Good luck, and I hope your little one feels better soon! :)

My youngest dd had a problem too. We talked about it and she decided she'd rather take the pills than swallow the liquids. She didn't like the chewables either.

But, I'm all for bribery, or anything that works with medicine they need.
