Has anyone given tjeir child a dose of medicine before seeing the dr. My daughter has an ear infection but I cant see the dr until tom, Iam debating giving her a dise of amoxicillan which she always gets with an ear infection. Anyone done this>
Tara

I wouldn't, it might alter the test results.

But if she is in extreme agony, and it's going to be a while before seeing the MD, then I'd go ahead and give it.

I wouldn't....that is why antibotics are becoming less effective...incorrect usage! Antibotics will not decrease pain. Tylenol or Advil/Motrin will help with discomfort.

Don't self medicate her with antibiotics, esp if you're already planning on seeing the doc. They won't make her feel better overnight, anyways. Plus, if she doesnt have an ear infection, you'll just be making her more resistent to the antibiotics.

I'd just give her something for the pain.

I am curious why you have amoxicillin available. Aren't you supposed to finish the prescription when you get it?

we have it because we the dr gave us a sample a few months ago in case a strep test was positive, it wasn't so we didnt use it. I only gave her motrin and she is sleeping now., but I know it is an ear infection because it was bleeding.

I was wondering the same thing! My sil is a doctor and it drives her mad when people do save and then self medicate with antibotics...don't they know they are just making their children & themselves resistant to antibotics??? In the long run you or your child will become more prone to illness and the medications will not work as well. Plus one mediciation given for one aliment may not be the best thing for another...

Not the the OP is doing that! Sorry to hear about her ear...such a shame. Hope she gets better soon!

Not trying to be difficult...but I have had an eardrum burst-and that is the only reason you should be seeing blood..it is definitely one of those times to take them to the ER asap.It is VERY painful, and you shouldn't mess around..honest

Now I am extremely worried. WHen I called my dr to tell her, how come she didnt tell me to go to the ER. Guess I better call her back . What happens if it did burst, do they do treat it differently. Thanks
Tara

Actually, a ruptured ear drum isn't too big of a deal. She'll just get antibiotics. I wouldn't go to the ER for it. My ear drums used to rupture all the time when I was growing up.

After the rupture the pain is gone, no more pressure. Bleeding is a sign of a rupture. She will be fine, give her some advil or tylenol if needed and go to your appointment in tomorrow.
