Hey everyone. My DD was just given a new prescription and I was wondering if anyone knows what would be needed to bring it across the border and on the flight. We are flying SW down & JB back and flying out of BUF if that makes any difference. TIA. :)

Is it liquid? You should be able to take it on in your carry on as long as its under the 100 ml and its in a clear baggie labelled from the pharmacy. If its tablets you can take it in your carry on same as you would your regular medications.

Yep! Just make sure that you have the original label and it is in the original packaging and you are good to go!

So no doctors note needed? Also does that go for any kind of medication? (Ex antidepressant & birth control)

No dr note needed but you should bring a copy of your prescription in case of loss of medication while away. And it doesnt matter unless it's a narcotic medication then you need a note i believe.

I've been concerned about this too until an airport security person at MCO said,"Honey, we are the TSA, not the DEA." We laugh about it now. Do as the others say re: packaging and labels and whether it's liquid and you'll be fine. :)

Narcotics are the only ones you need to worry about with customs, but any medications need to be in their origional package with your name on them.

If it is a prescription liquid medication, you do not need to worry about the size of the container...it must however be in the bottle from the pharmacy, with the prescription label on it. It must also be packaged separate from your 3-1-1 liquid bag and declared to TSA. I had prescription cough medication, which was a narcotic and I advised the TSA agent that I had the medication and he just took the clear baggie I had put my medication bottle in and checked it over and gave it back to me after our other bags had been x-rayed.

TSA isn't the problem with narcotics, CBP/DHS is where there may be an issue. Crossing the border with them requires a Dr's note.

I have never been asked at the border if I was bringing any narcotic medication into the US (or when returning to Canada). At the airport in Buffalo, I was never asked for a doctor's note for my prescription cough medicine which was a narcotic...I do know the TSA agent asked to see my ID and compared it to the name on the prescription bottle. Other than that, I had no problems but the medicine which was in the original container with the prescription label on it.

I have a prescription narcotic for anxiety, and I've never been asked about it or had a doctors note for it. I've always included it in the "medication" bag that I show at customs (along with birth control, tylenol, gravol, etc) and I've never had an issue. So long as its in the original prescription bottle, I'm not sure why they would question it.

Ok thank you. Yes I believe it's considered a narcotic, it's Prozac. I will definitely make sure it's in it's original bottle with label.

Prozac is an SSRI antidepressant. It is not a narcotic. Narcotics are addictive drugs that are opiods or opiod-like drugs that relieve pain and can alter mood and perception through inducing stupor or sleep. Examples include Morphine, Oxycontin, Codeine, as well as the benzadrines like Ativan, Valium etc.

I usually have to carry codeine and ativan when I travel and have never, ever been questioned by TSA or customs. I just make sure they are in their original bottles.
