Can anyone tell me what they've been prescribed and used in the past... and what if any side effects they had? Much Appreciated!

I can't remember the names of any of the meds I have taken, but I did take something with sulfa in it that made me feel really, really bad. Not deathly ill, just tired and feeling bad. So now I make sure nothing has sulfa in it and I am fine.

My 3 month old puppy is taking amoxicillan right now for a bladder infection. ;)

I hate them. I used to get one or two a year, I started taking cranberry tablets and haven't had one in quite a while. I don't know if that was what helped.

If you live in the south, Publix grocery store has (or used to ) several antibiotics for free. Worth a try if your script is on the list.

Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

I just take Antibiotic & this purple pill that turns your pee orange, ok not just orange but ORANGE. Just drink alot of water.

sulfa
keflex

Usually if I have a problem it is nausea
It is not uncommon for people to be allergic to sulfa drugs

I've been prescribed anti-bacterial medications..ie..bactrum or amoxicillian. Those medications will get rid of the infection. In the meantime you can go to the drug store and buy a product that helps with the discomfort..I can't remember the name but you can ask the Pharmacist.

Also drink LOTS of water and cranberry juice!! Hope that helps!! :thumbsup2

Isn't that the one where you can not have any alcohol? I have heard it makes you feel like crap.

Are you insinuating that I drink??!!:lmao:

That could be the reason it made me feel bad..I don't remember if I "partook" while I was on it...so funny, I made myself sick...:rotfl:

I am allergic to both pennicilan (sp?) and sulfa drugs... and a host of others.
My doc wrote me a scrip today and the name was SO FAMILIAR that I came home to research it a little. I figured I had an old bottle with my scribble notes on it or something, but nope. I went online and a TON of people say macrobid and cipro are both horrible. (Why oh why do I look these things up???):rotfl:
Then, I recall watching an Oprah (must have been 10 plus years ago because I never watch it anymroe) where she talked about some horrid antibiotic that almost killed a bunch of people but never got pulled. then I starting thinking, OH NO! What if that's what I'm remembering!
Crud.

I have taken Macrobid, Bactrim and Levaquin for UTI's. I will not ever take Levaquin again! Well, that is unless I'm dying and there isn't another option. ;)

Feel better soon! :goodvibes

I get so many bladder infections that I take Cipro once a week to make sure I dont get as many.

Quinolone antibiotics have had some controversy since they were introduced in the 80's. In reality they are usually well tolerated by most. I remember this class being associated with tendon issues. Oprah did do a segment on them.

All drugs have side effects and looking them up can certainly be scary. If you feel strongly about not taking Cipro call and discuss it with your Doctor. There is likely a suitable substitute even with your allergies. Sometimes we are just prescribed the flavor of the week.

I hope you start feeling better soon and get yourself on something so you can! :)

Pyridium is the one that turns your pee orange. Also, make sure you take out your contacts while you take it - your tears will be orange too.

Usually I end up with Bactrim or Cipro.

I've taken all of those at one time or another for UTI's. Never had a problem with any of them.

Peridium (sp?) is the little pill that turns your pee orange and numbs things. It's one of the best things ever invented. Uristat is the name of an OTC that does the same thing.

Stay away from any and all sugar drinks. This includes Cranberry juice. As the sugar in them makes your kidneys worse.

Cranberry juice is a good prevention, but BAD once you have it.

really :confused3 under a doctor's orders? I've heard that if you take an antibotic not to it's full course you will end up with a body that is immune to that drug (and or others too) seems like a strange way to keep an infection at bay to me. ;) :confused3

Good to know! :thumbsup2

I buy Azo Standard at the drug store that turns the urine orange too. It helps till you can get to the dr.

My doctor finally put me on macrodantin a few years ago after repeated infections. I stayed on it about 3 months with no problem. I've not had another one since.

That is true BUT in cases of recurring infections like UTIs (yes some women are extremely prone to them) and some forms of acne a doctor will prescribe ongoing antiobiotics. For people like this it is the only way to keep the problem under control. Let me stress that this is pretty rare. But yes it is correct that antibiotics and ALL medications should be taken exactly as prescribed.
