Medication for bladder infection

I buy Azo Standard at the drug store that turns the urine orange too. It helps till you can get to the dr.

The problem with Azo is that it can mask your symptoms. You might believe you are feeling better and that the problem has gone away. It can also invalidate the results of a urine test. So it is best just to take a regular pain reliever and get to a doctor ASAP.

I am allergic to both pennicilan (sp?) and sulfa drugs... and a host of others.
My doc wrote me a scrip today and the name was SO FAMILIAR that I came home to research it a little. I figured I had an old bottle with my scribble notes on it or something, but nope. I went online and a TON of people say macrobid and cipro are both horrible. (Why oh why do I look these things up???):rotfl:
Then, I recall watching an Oprah (must have been 10 plus years ago because I never watch it anymroe) where she talked about some horrid antibiotic that almost killed a bunch of people but never got pulled. then I starting thinking, OH NO! What if that's what I'm remembering!
Crud.

I'm allergic to both of the drugs you mentioned, so there should be something out there for you to use. I honestly can't remember what I was prescribed, but I never had any adverse side effects.

Stay away from any and all sugar drinks. This includes Cranberry juice. As the sugar in them makes your kidneys worse.

Cranberry juice is a good prevention, but BAD once you have it.

That's weird. Mine have always gotten better from drinking cranberry juice and lots of water. Once when I had to wait overnight to go to the doctor, I loaded up on the cranberry juice and my UTI was almost gone by the next morning.

Cipro for me. I ask for it by name as the macrobid made me feel awful, and I too am allergic to sulfa's.

I remember Macrobid, it was the one they put me on when I had a UTI while pregnant!:scared:

Macrobid and Cipro are both excellent drugs. Macrobid is the only one that is safe for pregnant women to take (from what I can remember from my days in a Urologist office) and Cipro is a broad spectrum antibiotic that can also be given for other types of infections.

AZO standard is great if you weren't given a prescription for Pyridium, they work on the same principle to give relief of symptoms. No matter what you are given, take all of the meds that are prescirbed so that the infection is completely cleared up.

Drink lots of water and Cranberry juice, which you can buy without sugar. My doctor recommended adding a little bit of Sprite to cut it and make it easier to drink, but in moderation. You can even buy Cranberry pills in the vitamin section and they are supposed to help prevent UTI's.

It's kind of an oxymoron.

The acid in the juice helps keep bacteria from forming in the bladder an kidneys. So it's a great preventer. But once the bacteria and yeast is there, the sugar feeds the yeast making it much much worse.

Unsweetened Cranberry juice is fine.
