We're going to a party for a friend's sons' medical school graduation. These are good friends who live 3-4 hours away, so we don't see them very often. When all our kids were little, we took several family vacations together. But, we don't know this young man as an adult. We'd like to bring an appropriate gift for him. I'm assuming cash would be preferred. We have the means to be generous, but don't want to overdo it, nor do we want to appear cheap.

Anyone know what a typical $ amount would be for this type of graduation?

I think cash woud be an approiate gift for medical school or law school graduations. My boyfriend's high school classmate graduated from med school a few years ago and my boyfriend mailed him $50. It's hard to say about the cash amounts.

Lets see when DH graduated from Med school, he got- a name plate for his office desk , I think maybe a business card holder monogramed, a nice pen set (I know that sounds weird but DR need to have a pen with them 24/7) a good bag (for papers, files, laptop) Of course money is always good those student loans will be rollin in soon! :scared1:we'll be paying that thing off when our girls are in school!

I hear ya! DH graduated in '91 and we still have one nagging Sallie Mae loan. I agree that cash would be good. We married right after match day in '91, which is in March. I moved to Augusta GA with him while he completed his last few weeks. I had paid off all bills and my car and had money saved. Our wedding cash helped sustain us, along with my savings until we moved, settled and he received his first paycheck, in JULY. If he's moving off some where for internship/residency, cash or the equivalent would be wonderful to help him get started. Honestly, all of the little "niceties" that he received are stored in boxes in our attic :).

When I graduated, I got books, and I still think books, the old-fashioned, non-Kindle kind are great.

I've been giving "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch as graduation gifts this year, usually with a $50 bill inside.

Other good books for medical school graduates are "On Doctoring" edited by Richard Reynolds and John Stone, "Complications" by Atul Gawande, "How Doctors Think" by Jermone Groopman, "In My Own Country" by Abraham Verghese, or even " House of God" by Samuel Shem.

Some schools give those books out for free when you start (well, free= $40,000). I know my school gave us "On Doctoring" during our orientation. A friend of mine got "How Doctor's Think" from his school. My boyriend gave me "House of G-d", telling me if I waited until graduation to read it, it would be too late.

I think cash is always much appreciated. I'm a bit of a pen nut, so I would love a nice pen, not some cheap pen from Staples, but I would never use it in the hospital since things in hospitals have a way of walking off.

DH had House of G-d when we married. I agree about the pen thing, anythng nice has a way of disappearing. I remember him paying over $300 on a stethascope and then having to literally chase down a cardiologist who walked off with it after remarking that it was better than his! :scared1:

I agree about the pens as well. When my DH graduated, I gave him a Mont Blanc pen. I had it engraved so that it would not "walk off" so easily.
