If you receive a positive on your Pap Smear what does this mean.

I went to the Mayo Clinic web site and it sounds really scary.

Anyone every go through a positive result. The Mayo clinic says a positive result is usually never wrong.

I have never had one, but friends that have were told there were abnormal cells there that needed further investigation. No one has ever gotten cervical cancer in my circle, they just had to go to the doc every couple of months to be monitored until they come out normal again.

I had a false positive once - have your doctor do a repeat before you stress about it.

I had one that came back positive. They did a second a month later and it was fine.

My sister had a positive and her second one came back positive. She had a same day surgery to have her cervix cut! (they actually slice off a piece)

It really wasnt bad. It was uncomfortable she said but not painful. She has had no positive tests since.

I would try not to worry about it until your second test comes back.

I used to get positives everytime I had one done. Had to go every 6 months. They did a cone biopsy once and it was fine. After many many years of positves and being re-checked I finally got a neg. I asked them if they were sure it was negative becuase I've never had one before! LOL
I'm happy to report tho for several years now they have always been normal.
Don't worry about it, just get rechecked and it will probably be fine. :wave2:

Thanks, everyone for the replies. Going in for another test on Monday the 14, so hopefully it will be negative.

I've had ASCUS (?) as a result a few times. I think it stands for atypical squamous cells of an unknown source? In other words, the cells were a bit whacky. What they did was give me meds to take for a week to rule out any infections, and then come back in a month for another PAP.

Each time the second PAP came back normal--except once. That time I had to have a culposcopy (sp?). That's where they look at your cervix with a microscope and snip off samples of anything on there that may look suspect, then send it to the lab. Luckily there were no precancerous cells and everything came out fine.

I had the same thing, I went and got a second test and it still showed signs of abnormal cells that had a high risk turning into cancer cells so the doctor had to cut it out of my cervix. To me it was painful when they did it and 2 days afterwards, but they gave me prescription pain medicine to help. Don't worry, you will be good. I was so scared when it happened (I was 23) but now after going in every 2 months to get rechecked I am thankful that they caught it early and now am getting normal results again.

It's really quite common. I used to get them all the time.

Sometimes your cycle throws the results off, or sometimes you could have a minor (like yeast) infection.

I really wouldn't get upset until you've been re-tested.

You also might want to ask your doctor to use the "thin prep" test.
