Good morning!

Heading off on our Disney Cruise next month!

I'm just now getting around to buying travel insurance. Whoops. Anyway, we can't get pre-existing conditions covered because I'm buying it so late. Live and you learn. The main medical concern I have for my family is my daughter has chronic ear infections that usually require antibiotics.

My question is: Can they prescribe antibiotics on the cruise ship? I know they have medical staff on board and should be able to diagnose the ear infection.

I could ask our doctor to go ahead and give us a prescription for the antibiotic and only take it if she is diagnosed with an ear infection, but I'm afraid being prescribed something will mess up that pre-existing conditions clause on our travel insurance.

Thank you.

I’m sure that they have some antibiotics on board, but that would require taking time out of your vacation. Plus you don’t know what kinds they will have. I would just have your doctor prescribe you antibiotics for the trip, since your daughter has a history.

Yes, they have antibiotics etc. which they can prescribe for your daughter. The medical care is quite good. Hopefully, she will not have any problems. Happy sailing.

when my son was younger, he too had frequent ear infections. yes, we had to visit the clinic on board shortly after boarding on our first cruise. the care was relatively quick and efficient and they do have antibiotics on board to dispense, but we did miss sail away party. you will be required to pay them at the time of service since they are considered a "foreign" clinic and they will give you a copy of your bill to submit to your insurance company after you return home (we got full reimbursement but every company has different policies). I think it was around $250 in 2010. We learned to always take a week long supply of Amoxicillan with us on all family vacations after that...

Thank you for your first hand info! I think I will ask for the antibiotic just in case. If we question it we will get her checked before giving it to her.

I do not know where you are coming from but if you get your doctor to write a prescription before you leave, take it with you to Florida. Before going to the port, stop at Publix supermarket, you can get most antibiotics for free.

Thanks, we live in Florida! Love Publix!
