Medical Issues With My Daughter

My daughter has a history of random medical issues that we've not been able to pinpoint and which may not be related at all. However, she will usually be in pretty severe pain for an hour or two and then just tired after that.

Earlier in the year, she was screaming from abominal pain. We took her to the ER, they said inflammed appendix, but her pain got better. One doctor said sometimes little kids will have a grumping appendix that will inflame but then go back down and maybe that is what is wrong with her.

Last weekend we were at Great Wolf Lodge and she had a fever. We would give her Tylenol, she would sleep or relax for a little bit, then seemingly feel find until the medicine wore off, at which time the fever woul return and she'd become listless again. No fever since Saturday night, but this morning my mom was watching her and she was playing happily showing no signs of feeling badly. All of a sudden, she stopped what she was doing, crying and screaming that her head hurt. There was no consoling her and she was almost hysterical. My mom put her on the bed, covered up her head and rubbed her back, and she calmed down enough to feel better. Then, when I got home she woke up yelling and screaming again that it hurts, her head hurts, owwww, etc. I rocked her and she fell asleep mid-scream. She appears to be resting peacefully now. She has a doctor's appointment at 3:00, so if she is still in pain I will take her then. I'm hoping that she will wake up and feel better, in which case I'm not sure I should take her to the doctor.

I just don't know how concerned I should be. I know kids get sick, but I don't know how common it is for them to be SCREAMING from pain (different types) every 4-5 months or so. Maybe she just has a low pain tolerance? Although when she has fever or a stomach bug she handles that okay. She doesn't cry or scream like she does in these cases.

I feel like total hypochondriac mom because by the time I take her to doctor she is feeling 100% better and I know he's wondering why in the world this healthy kid is in his office.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong with her? I hate seeing my kiddos sick. :(

how old is she?

I would take her to the doctor, even if she wakes up pain free. It might just be a virus, it might not. Hope your DD is feeling better soon.

Poor baby. :guilty: Something has to be wrong. Pursue this with her pediatrician and so on. Go with your gut feeling here. Moms know when something is wrong. It's not normal for anyone to scream in pain.

If it's been going on for awhile, it sounds like the doctor may need to order some testing. I don't know exactly what kind of tests, but something doesn't sound right. If it were me, I'd want to get to the bottom of it.

Good Luck!! Hope she feels better.

LuvOrlando has a good idea. My son screamed in pain from an ear infection. It wasn't constant - it was jabs of pain. Hopefully that's all it is. :goodvibes

I would keep looking for an explanation.

My daughter is now almost 22. For years, I questioned doctors about her low blood pressure. Also, when we would get back from a 3 day horse show (particularly if it was hot), she would take a week to recover. It was always dismissed.

When she was 19, she collapsed one day. When she came to, she started vomiting. Lots of tests run, and it was determined that her blood pressure was bottoming out from time to time (for no particular reason) which would cause her heart rate to increase (for example, it would "stick" at 180bpm in the middle of the night while she was asleep). When they questioned her about her heart racing so, she didn't even know what they meant (it was "normal" for her).

We had to see more than one doctor to get this issue resolved. One specialist put her on medication that is normally given to the elderly because long term use will damage your organs (and then he wanted to increase it when it stopped working well :headache:).

After seeing several doctors, we finally found the right one who sent us to a clinic at Vanderbilt back in March that specializes in her condition. They changed her medication (she now actually takes an old, "safe" medication and only takes a baby's dose - "less is more" with this medication and this condition). She'll never be cured and may never be able to have children, but she can manage the condition and won't be injured by the medication.

I say all of this to say, if you really see a problem (and it sounds like there is one), I would keep looking for a solution.

Take her to the doctor. They need to figure out what is wrong. Might be unrelated, but if she is developing migraines they can help her.

Did they remove her appendix? I think it is all related to her appendix.

I would be looking at chiropractic care. Lots of weird things happening that MDs can't put their finger on is a pretty common thing that gets people to the chiro. Nice gentle work if you can find them...I love Network Spinal Analysis and Atlas Orthogonal, especially for a kidlet.

If you really want to get "out there", find a traditional homeopath to find her constitutional remedy, see if that helps with the random pain and listelessness.

I'd try to stay away from dosing her with tylenol. It's a drug that causes me problems and as you can see from the news they are finding that it's not as benign as many people thought...

This sounds like Celiac disease or extreme lactose intolerance--I am dealing with the same symptoms she is having and those are two of the possibilities for me--Good luck!

I don't have an opinion about what the problem could be, but I wanted to tell you to follow your instincts! My DD who is now almost 8 had medical problems with her bowels and bladder that appeared at about 3 yrs old. The pediatrician we were seeing at the time finally reluctantly sentus to a urologist who in turn did nothing but tell us we were pushing potty training too hard. She had been completely trained- even through the night at 26 months, so I disagreed. Luckily my insurance plan changed and I was able to see a different ped who sent us to a children's hospital. In a matter of minutes, we had a diagnosis and a treament plan. My DD now is off all meds and is doing wonderfully! If you feel like you need more from your doctors, don't rest until you find one who will help!

I would have her tested for Celiac Disease. Atleast do a search online about celiac disease....

Did they say anything about her gallbladder? I had similar symptoms (the pain that would come and go, severe headaches, dizziness). My gallbladder was diseased and certain foods triggered an attack (lactose, high acidic juice, grease). Just a thought, I never would have thought my GB was having issues. I hope she feels better soon. DS had 2 hernias and everytime I told the doctor about the mysterious lump, it would go away. A photo finally solved the issue. Don't worry, you're not overreacting! I felt the same way. Trust your instincts.

It could be what my nephew (12) had last year. A stomach emptying problem. It requires special medicine from the government. The side effects of the med. are very serious.

whoa...huh?!!?? special medicine from the government?? like the agency of the special creepy guys?

Personally as a mother you are the advocate for your child. Please do not allow anyone to make you feel like "hypochondriac mom" for trying to help your child. The truth is it is what any of us would in the same case.
