Hi Everyone,

I'm Canadian and would like to travel to USA.

Any suggestions about where to get medical coverage for an underlying heart condition in order to travel to USA?

My husband had heart surgery in 2020 during Covid (2 valve replacements & 1 pacemaker).

We've been avoiding travel outside of Canada because didn't want to risk leaving the country with his heart condition. It's been a few years so we're ready to try and visit Disneyland. However, I don't know where to get medical coverage. I will check with our extended health provider but just in case they don't cover or have limited coverage, please advise what's best place to get medical insurance for an underlying heart condition. I'm assuming having heart surgery is considered an underlying heart condition.

Thanks for your help!

Note: Sorry. Please excuse my double posts on both the Canadian and regular Disneyland forum. Thanks.

I would look at Manulife and Pacific Blue Cross, iirc both of those have optional coverage for preexisting conditions. Make sure, however, that if the insurance has a stability clause in it that your husband's condition meets their stability criteria.

Reminder to everyone reading this to please ensure you have medical coverage. I'm glad we did on our previous trip. Son's emergency hospital visit cost USD$1,000. Luckily, we didn't need to pay because we had insurance.

BTW my son spent about 5 minutes with the ER doctor who could not diagnose what was wrong with him.
Prognosis: unexplained hives. Was given prescription for Benadryl (which we had to pay for also). So that 5 minutes in emergency was a very costly 5 minutes.

We missed a few days of Disneyland. My husband went with my daughter but they only had partial days because he had to return to help me hold down our son so we could dose him with the Benadryl. The Benadryl did not help. Our son looked terrible. Face and body swollen ... eyes swollen almost shut. Covered completely head to toe, back and front in hives. We took photos in case the insurance company wanted proof of reason for the emergency visit.

Luckily, the 3rd day into our trip, my husband recalled reading something about allergic reactions and gut flora. We were desperate as our son wasn't getting better. At 2:00 am we packed up both kids and headed to CVS. Pretty scary at 2:00 am. Don't recommend it.

I purchased probiotics and gave them to our son. It was like a miracle. The next morning, his hives decreased a lot. He was still "hivey" but much less swollen so we were finally able to take him to the parks. We continued with the probiotics until all his hives disappeared.

Therefore, to anyone who is experiencing "unexplained hives" and Bendadryl etc. is not working, perhaps you can try taking probiotics. We swear by it. We are not doctors or medical professionals. This advice is strictly based on our own experience but maybe it can help save you money and an unnecessary trip to the hospital.

We get our insurance through BCAA which is part of the CAA network. They have a pre-existing condition coverage with stability clause.
