Medicaid related question with someone's estate

Just wanted to add that I'm sorry you are going through this. It's very hard when our parents need nursing..I've been there.

As an aside, so many people haven't really preplanned just what they would do if they went into a nursing home, and end up losing what little they had. Our neighbor had to buy his grandmother's Lake home, because it had to be sold as part of the pay down..she always assumed she would be well right up until she died, and as with many people had to go into a nursing home. Her family bought the camp, as well as the house next to us, but it could have been avoided. It's so hard on those left to figure it out, including the expenses of a lawyer.

Thanks everyone for their kind words and advice:flower3: This is unbelievably hard on us mentally and emotionally. Just getting the courage up to go visit her daily at the hospital is tough. She was sooooo out of it from the infections she was doing some really crazy things and seeing people that weren't there and having conversations with them too!

Today I am visiting a few nursing homes in the area. I live in south jersey so if anyone can weigh in on a good one...that would be great. Tomorrow is our appointment with the lawyer, so maybe he can clear some things up for us.

Keep in mind, you will probably NOT have a choice where to send her. Not all nursing homes accept Medicaid patients and even if they do, they may not have a bed available. Have you spoken with the Social Workers at the hospital yet? If not, you NEED to do that first, today.

Yes , I have spoken with the social worker three times now. The last time was yesterday. They said she was going to be transferred today as long as she stopped having soft stools. The c-diff hasn't cleared up yet but they tell me that they have private isolation rooms at the rehab for that. She will be on the medicine for three weeks. Will be speaking today with the doctor to make sure the pnuemo and UTI have cleared up. And I thought it was alot of work caring for her when she lived with us before this month...that was nothing!!!!

Her caseworker at the hospital SHOULD give you a list-this is VERY important to save you a lot of "running around"
Call her!
On the list it tells you which are SNF units-which will will take medicaid -how many beds- and even (on our list) which ones seldom have openings

We then had to give them a list of 3 that they conact a couple days before of discharge.

That is the facility I chose to have her placed in for rehab. I have heard from others that they liked this place too. They do take medicaid and I am going there today to tour the facility. They told me to apply for long term nursing care as soon as she is admitted for rehab. As long as a bed becomes available, she will be accepted.

Also, ask the nursing home about any state programs. In Florida, there was a program to have older folks who could still do partial care in Assisted Living Facilitaies, not nursing homes. ALFs are much, much less expensive -- and often less depressing -- than nursing homes.

And if your mom was by any chance in the military, the VA has a program, too, called Aid and Attendance.

She could use this if her husband qualified.
