LOS ANGELES -- Remember Meat Loaf's performance Wednesday on "American Idol"? He doesn't.

Meat Loaf has absolutely gripping television stage fright, yet he still performed with Katharine McPhee on the finale.

He said the only thing he remembers is the television people telling him that he had less than two minutes before he went on, and then he was walking off the stage and thought he was going to pass out.

He has no memory of what happened in the middle. He admits he sat down and began to "cry like a baby" afterwards.

Meat Loaf said that he's surprised he didn't die of a heart attack.

Meanwhile, McPhee had told him during rehearsals she wasn't nervous at all, and Meat Loaf said he wishes he could be her for five seconds.

He said he had never sung that song live before, and as he puts it, it felt like he had "an alien busting out my chest."

Taylor Hicks won the title over McPhee, capping off the show's fifth season.

Funny, because I thought he looked kinda "off".

Actually, that performance creeped me out. I mean, old dude singing a love song with young girl - just sorta yucky for me.

You could tell that he was quite nervous (or that something was going on) I thought his performance with Katherine was GREAT!

Personally I think it is an excuse for a horrid performance.

My friend who was there said he avoided reporters like the plague.

I've heard that many recording artists have terrible stage fright. They are okay in the recording studio, but get them out there in front of thousands of people and they shake like a leaf!

Seriously? You're the first person I've heard of that thought that!

I don't watch AI, so I didn't see his performance, but I love his music and I'm sorry to hear he suffers from stage fright. It kinda reminds me of Carlie Simon.

I do remember watching him perform on Larry King Live one time though. Larry had no clue who the heck he was and was amazed that he was so popular. That is, till he heard him singing.

Cher too - at least back in the early years - I remember waiting and waitng for her and Sonny to take the stage one time. Word was she was nervous and they had to talk her into going out.....

I have heard that Meatoaf is a great guy in real life - once knew someone who did canvassing - he rang doorbell to find it was his home, and was invited in to sit down and chat - Meatloaf was very nice and down to earth...

How sad.

Now I feel bad, because we were sort of goofing on him. I actually wondered at the time if he were ill, he looked really shaky up there. Poor thing was probably on the brink of a panic attack! :(

Stage fright has plagued a lot of stars over the years. I have read that even Glenn Miller suffered from it. I think some settle down once they're on stage and in the swing of things, but some obviously don't. Some disguise it very well and some don't.

He has not been out in "public" for about 5 years that I know of, he has gained ALL his weight back, and is probably back on "the juice" so to speak which plagued him in the past..... :guilty:

I saw Meatloaf in person at an outdoor summer concert 3 years ago. He was absolutely awful. He did not appear nervous or to have stage fright. He actually was horrible rude and condisending to tht crowd that had paid to see him.Ever other word was &**#$$##, it was terrible. I have no respect for him. He probably felt sick because he is really not very good anymore. I used to love his songs now I cringe when I hear them because it drags up the memory of the live performance. He performs live all the time.

Not to hijack the thread, but I thought every one of the guest performers - other than Prince - stank horribly. Toni Braxton was repulsive. And not because she insisted on dirty dancing with my man ;) , but because she did so with a big horny smile on her face during a sad song about social injustice. It was sick.

How about next time actually rewarding the finalists by having them sing with real, talented, decent performers. Much classier would have been pairing Kat with Clay (instead of making a joke out of him) and Tay with Carrie (not to reveal the results or anything :rotfl: )

I think if I suffered from stage fright I would not have agreed to be on a show with thousands in the audience and millions watching on TV.

I, too, could see something was wrong with him. I was wondering if he was on drugs. :(
