I still have a while to plan, but I want to get the ball rolling on this, because it might take a while. :)

We are taking my parents back to Disney World next fall. They love WDW and have been before, but this will be their first time in 14 years and their first with their grandchildren! We convinced them to do the dining plan. (My dad has always been the type to obsess over every nickel and dime of the food budget, although he loves a good meal, so just the freedom to choose whatever he wants and have it already taken care of is great for them. And I can't tell you how excited my mom is.)

We're going for six nights. Each of us is going to chose a table-service restaurant. My husband and I and my elder son have already selected ours. (Ohana, Cape May, Chef Mickey.) Younger kid is going back and forth between Sci-Fi Dine-In and Coral Reef. My mom is contemplating Be Our Guest and Grand Floridian Cafe.

And then there's my dad.

He's a real meat-and-potatoes kind of guy. (He also loves breakfast.) Not a huge fan of anything...exotic, which is very broad by his standards. (He did not care for Boma 14 years ago...) I'm trying to think of a few places to give him to look at because if I just turn him loose on the dining websites, he'll be overwhelmed.

The one place I have on the list right now is the Garden Grill breakfast. (We've never been there before, so that would be nice.) Any other suggestions for either a great table-service breakfast or a good but very...ordinary... table-service meal?

The Captain's Grill at the Yacht Club has a very good breakfast buffet. It's not a character meal so it is easy to get ADR's and is quiet. The buffet has a great selection!

If he likes barbeque, and is up for the antics... the skillet at Whispering Canyon might be a good choice!

for meat and potatoes he is probably going to very much enjoy BoG - they have a basic steak served with fries that gets great reviews. and I'd highly recommend booking that one at your 180+ day window, if you decide to drop it for GF cafe it should be very easy to make the switch but would be difficult the other way around.

I see that you don't have anything listed for AK - are you planning to go and if you do are you planning any TS there? yak and yeti is a little asianish but their kobe burger with fries gets rave reviews and is fairly accessible to plain eaters.

Garden Grill breakfast does look very good, I am doing it in December with my kiddo (he went there with his dad for a lunch adr and loved it, we are doing breakfast).

If you like italian food, Mama Melrose with F! package is a very good deal at 1TS on the DDP - it enables you to get appetizers as well so even if you don't even use the F! seating you are ahead of the game on the plan. They also have a well reviewed steak but also other italian comfort food items.

Had an awesome steak and potato at Rose and Crown Pub. Hadn't been in years (as we love Raglan Road) but will definitely be back there. Enjoy the planning.

MK; Liberty Tree for lunch
EPCOT; Le Cellier
Resorts for breakfast; Kona at the Poly is our fav, and also we like the cafe at the Grand Floridian.

You might even check out the menu at The Turf Club at Saratoga Springs Resort. Also, Olivia's at Old Key West has some nice comfort food. Their buttermilk southernmost fried chicken is pretty good.

Liberty tree tavern- traditional family style thanksgiving dinner at dinnertime and multiple choices at lunch- sandwiches- pot roast, etc.
50's Prime time café- fried chicken, meat loaf, pot roast, etc.
Sci Fi Café- burgers, sandwiches, steak
Garden Grill restaurant- beef, turkey, fish served family style, mash pototatoes, and its character dining
Le Cellier- for a higher priced option, but its definitely all about steak and potatoes here
Whispering Canyon or Hoop de doo revue over at Fort Wilderness if you eat "barbeque"

Honestly, a ton of places offer steak somewhere on the menu- of course that's a little pricier than other things, but its almost always there as a more "basic" choice at most places.

Unfortunately, Le Cellier is not all about steaks any more. They only have two on the menu. NY Strip and Filet. No Ribeye any more. They need to drop Steakhouse from their name.
Le Cellier Filet Mignon
AAA Canadian Tenderloin, Mushroom Risotto, Asparagus-Tomato Relish, Truffle-Butter Sauce
$52.00

Cheshire Pork Rib Chop
Crème Fraîche Antebellum Coarse Grits, Petite Summer Squash, Smoked Pulled Pork, Spiced Peach Marmalade
$44.00

Poulet Rouge
Pan-seared chicken Breast and Sausage-stuffed Leg, Summer Hash, Pea Purée, Brentwood Corn, Corn-Truffle Sauce
$35.00

Meyer Lemon-scented Tofu
Crispy Tofu, Asparagus Purée, Farro Wheat, Charred Pearl Onion, Lemon Purée, Marcona Almonds
$28.00

Spice-scented Alaskan Halibut
Fregola-Chickpea Pasta, Tahini Espuma, Summer Greens, Fragrant Fumé
$43.00

Angus New York Strip
Potato-Turnip Gratin, crispy Paprika Onions, Three Peppercorn Butter
$50.00

Hoop de Doo is more about the fried chicken than barbeque. But they do have ribs. The Strawberry Shortcake is more like cake with some mashed strawberries, not really shortcake.
In between skits and song standards, chow down on buckets of all-you-care-to-enjoy fried chicken and smoked BBQ pork ribs, as well as a tossed green salad, baked beans, fresh-baked cornbread and strawberry shortcake.

I'd suggest also looking at the Garden Grill dinner menu. I consider that meal standard meat and potatoes fare and it's very good. I also think the Liberty Tree Tavern suggestion is a good one. I don't think you mentioned where you are staying but I'd look at the menu for Captains Grille dinner as well if you are in the EPCOT area. I think Captains Grille, Trails End and the Wave have really good breakfast buffets but honestly, I wouldn't use a dining credit - I'd pay out of pocket and use a dining credit for dinner.

I think you could do well at 50's PT (fried chicken and/or pot roast), Sci Fi (strip steak is really good), or Liberty Tree Tavern. If you didn't have the dining plan or if you can figure out a way to save two credits each I would recommend the Yachtsman Steakhouse.

All personal advice.....

Ultimate Meat and Potatoes? Shula's - Dolphin Hotel.

Meat : - finest Steak available.
Potatoes - separate sides.... baked, killer au gratin.... you could just stop here - but there is more :).

You could also go for the best caesar salad at WDW. And you COULD go for a stunning Molten Lava Dessert :).

I agree with Liberty Tree Tavern. We've eaten there a few times and have never been disappointed by their family-style-Thanksgiving-type dinner.

If you don't choose Coral Reef (and go for Sci-Fi diner) you will not have an ADR for Epcot. I suggest Rose and Crown as they have lots of English dishes that have meat and potatoes. If not, how about Raglan Road at Disney Springs? Lots of Irish food that involves meat and potatoes.

The first place that came to mind for me is the '50s Prime Time Cafe. They have a lot of traditional, comfort food type choices. This would also work well if your son goes with Coral Reef as you would then not have an ADR for the Studios.

Trails End has carved meats, fried chicken, peel and eat shrimp, great desserts.
