Measles at Disneyland (combined threads)

I totally agree with what people are saying you can get it anywhere the question is if the virus is still lingering who is spreading it still in the park. As it doesn't just live on a handlebar of a swing etc.. It has to be from a person in the park that day etc. So the question is are people still being diagnosed as they travelled in december or is more the virus coming in day to day

Is there any chance of leaving your little one with Grandma or a sitter while you go? I certainly understand your wanting to go to DL, and if any part of it is non-refundable or can't be rescheduled, it would be a big sacrifice for you to cancel your trip. Still, you don't want the baby to get sick--trust me. My siblings and I had measles as children. My sister was an infant and cried for three weeks straight. She wouldn't take fluids and probably should have been in the hospital on an IV.

I'm not trying to frighten you. DL may be safe now, or at least, safer than it was. There's no guarantee that your youngster will catch the disease, or that he will be as sick as my sister was. Just trying to give you an idea of what it can be.

Of course, doctors are trying to stop the spread of the disease, so they are being very cautious. It's a tough choice to make.

Just my two cents here but 4 months is really young to fight of the measles if God forbid she was to catch it. Did you book through Disney's travel company? I'm thinking that even if you didn't have the insurance if you were to talk to them about booking 9 months ago and the risk to your child they would help out. :good vibes Good Luck.

DS7 and I are headed to DLR the first week of March, and while I know he's up to date on his MMR (had both shots on schedule), I was born in the early 70's and wasn't sure of my status. I emailed my Dr, and she put in the lab request so I popped over on Tuesday for the blood draw. I just got my lab results back, and I'm immune for Rubella, but not Measles or Mumps! I'm so glad that this prompted me to find out. With the rate of immunizations dropping, I don't want to be at risk for catching either one. DS is thrilled that this time I'm the one who has to go get the shot! He's just bummed that he'll be at school when I go in for my shot and can't come with to watch me get it!

I don't think it's a concern of it JUST being in the parks but it's a general concern in that area where large crowds can gather. I can almost guarantee other theme parks are saying the same thing. It just so happens that a few CMs caught it.

Echoing everyone else's response, it's not safe to bring an unvaccinated child into the parks whether that child is 4 months or 4 years. Unvaccinated is unvaccinated difference is a 4 yr old could get the shot. It's safer to keep your baby at home right now.

It's not still contagious from the initial infection. It's contagious because the disease is spreading to others in the area, any one of whom can come into the parks on any given day before they ever know they have it.

DLR is a place where large groups of people come together located in an area known to have an outbreak. That's the issue.

I did this last year and she had them back to me within 24 hours. I think my dad took 48 hours. Have you called your dr? You have a booster so you should be good to go either way.

I've called them twice this week and nothing. The office staff told me to call the lab myself. They are not the most helpful that's for sure. She had me get the titer without realizing I was leaving so soon. Glad I trusted my gut and just got it.

I had my results back the next day. I did the test on Tuesday morning, got the results today (Wednesday), and I'll go in tomorrow for the booster shot.

Hi! I got my blood test last Thursday and heard back this Monday that I'm still immune. (I'm 46, so I was surprised!) I was all ready to get vaccinated if I didn't hear back Monday morning. We will be in the parks February 6th-10th.

Since you got the booster, I wouldn't worry about it at this point. Have fun!

It can live on surfaces for a few hours actually.

The problem is that it spreads easily. People are contagious without knowing it. So they go to public places and spread it to who knows how many people and then they spread it and so forth. People don't know they are spreading it.

Personally, as much as I love Disneyland, it's not worth the risk to bring an unvaccinated child.

Was MMR a requirement to enroll at public schools in all 50 states back in the 80s? If so, my parents would have done this as they are not "anti-vaxx".

In addition, I became a US Citizen in the early 2000s, and there were some immunization requirements that specifically includes MMR. I remember going to the doctor to take care of a bunch of stuff at that time as well.

Also, I was born and spent my toddler years in a foreign country that (according to some Google searches) requires MMR between 9-15 months.

So basically, although I don't have records or recollection of specifically getting the MMR, seems like it's a good chance I've gotten AT LEAST one shot, and maybe as many as 3!

So does this sound good enough, or should I still visit my doctor and ask for a test or booster just to be super safe?

If you're 32 you would have had at least one to start school in the 80s and probably one more to continue on to midldle school in the early 90s. I'm a few years older than you and had 2 due to school requirements.

It's really up to you and what you're comfortable with. My husband knows he had 1 and is pretty sure he had a 2nd in the mid-90's. He's 36. He decided he's willing to take the risk because he's almost positive he had 2. I, on the other hand, am more paranoid and planned to get tested until my mom found my immunization records that show I had 2. I'm pretty comfortable with that so I am no longer being tested before our trip.

I agree. It definitely would be a good idea to have a titers test done, just in case your immunity is low or nonexistent.
Earlier this week I had blood drawn for the titers testing.
I don't know why some people are able to receive their results within 24 or 48 hours and then everybody else it take many days. Blah!

I'm in my 40's, and I wasn't sure about my immunity, so I had my titers done and got the results the next day. I found out that I am not immune to measles or mumps, but my rubella screen came back immune. I just got my MMR booster this morning, and it wasn't bad at all.

I think better safe than sorry. The blood draw was easy, and I feel much better knowing for sure that I'm taking care of my immunity.
