Hi

A friend has just returned from Orlando and has told me about people sharing meals as they are very large portions

Is this correct and is it an acceptable practise.

I might find this embarassing, but if lots do it, why not especially with children

any views will be appreciated as we are going next year as there is 4 adults and 2 children, any saving on meals will be great

thanks ANNIE

I think it's acceptable anywhere except for the buffet type restaurants. My DD and I intend to share on our upcoming trip because she's a vegetarian and I'm watching the carbs. We can often share one meal and both have plenty to eat.

My mother and I very often split. We will each order a salad or a soup and split an entree. I usually order for both of us by saying "she'll have X and I'll have Y and we will be sharing the Z. The server will then either bring us two smaller plates and a serving spoon so that we can split it ourselves or they will split it before bringing it to us. I generally tip a bit extra, especially if they split it for us.

I think it is perfectly acceptable, and you server will be less likely to frown if all order a beverage, and either the salad/soup or maybe an appetiser. We do it all the time when traveling and don't want to deal with doggie bags, or waste a lot. Although, personally I think if they offer discounted kids'meals, you should order one for each child over toddler age. Smaller children, simply order them a beverage.

DH and I usually share entrees, or if we feel like eating a light meal, we'll order soup and salad.
This works especially well at the Coral Reef- their Lobster soup is fantastic, and their salad is great too!
We usually can get away from there with a total bill of about $28, including tip.

I've also heard that quite a few of the adults order off of the kids menu. And I've heard of some of the restaurants offering half-portion servings.

I hope that this will help to end the embarassment!!

DH and I share all the time with no embarrassment. It helps you get eat more different kinds of food, and you don't feel lethargic for the rest of the day. We usually share an appetizer or get our own soup or salad and then share an entree. They usually split it for us in the back (I think we get bigger portions of the sides when they do that), but once we just got two plates and a big knife because we were sharing a burger. Just tip well when you're done.

Thanks these are great ideas. We always like to get an appetizer but then we can't eat a meal. I am going to utilize these plans.

Splitting is fine EXCEPT at unlimited food type of restaurants (buffets, salad bars and meals that offer plate refills). Since the server is doing the same work as if you ordered a meal you should tip on the high side.

I'm a server and we serve such large portions that people often split entrees. Each of our entrees comes w/ salad for one so I always suggest adding an extra salad so both can enjoy their own salad and when people ask about sering sizes I'll sometimes suggest sharing so they can try one of our great appetizers or a piece our wonderful tiramasu b/c I know that there is no way I love desert and would never have room after eating one of our dinners. IMHO sharing is fine, just remember that the the server is still working just as hard for you as if you each had a seperate entree so if you get good service maybe tip a little extra.
