I was planning on checking it in like a piece of luggage, but I was not aware you could check it in the way you are saying.
Do I just tell them (the airline) that I want the stroller immediately after landing?
Sorry not a very experienced flyer.
The obvious advantage to gate-checking the stroller is you can actually use it in both airports.
You don't need to do anything in advance. All you have to do is notify a gate agent when you get to the gate your flight is leaving from. Simply tell them you are gate-checking the stroller. They'll have you fill out a little tag, and you'll then attach the tag to the stroller. THAT'S ALL!
When it's time to board, you wheel the stroller onto the jetway but you stop as soon as you get to the aircraft, in the part of the jetway where it gets wider and round. Fold it up and leave it there, then proceed onto the aircraft.
A ramper (ground crew/luggage handler) will get it and take it outside/downstairs to the aircraft's cargo hold.
When you leave the aircraft, step aside as soon as you get into the jetway, and wait for your stroller to be brought up there; the rampers will leave them there for people to get themselves. There's only one exterior door in the jetway, so you'll know where to look for someone coming in with your stroller. Don't worry, if you're flying into and out of MCO you won't be the only party with a gate-checked stroller, trust me!
I'm a very experienced flyer but in May was the first time we flew with our 2 pre-schoolers, so gate-checking was completely new to me, too. It's a breeze. Like I said, just tell them at the gate you want to gate-check the stroller and they'll guide you through the rest. No worries. HAVE FUN!
