ME and baggage

For me my carry-ons are already full with other things like cameras and video cameras. Also, the bad stories I've heard about ME were enough for me to want to get my own bags.

So if anyone here is at MCO on January 24th around 1:45pm or so...sorry in advance. I'm taking my own bags.

sorry to see this thread go south. but a lesson learned for us. We took a trip to Tucson for a family reunion. My husband took a later flight than I (couple days later) His flight was delayed in Chicago for weather. His bags went who knows where...we had to go out and purchase a comb, underwear, deodorant, socks, a shirt and a pair of shorts. His bag finally showed up the day before he was to leave to return- never even had to unpack. Those bad stories you hear about..hmmm.... maybe the blame is being put in the wrong place? I think so. Our lesson- we now pack for such an incident when we travel. It was a pain to have to go out an purchase this stuff- took time away from my family get together. So be prepared if when you are waiting for your bags at the carousel and they dont show you will loose lots of time dealing with the airline and shopping because you didnt prepare with your carry on. And one of the perks of ME is they track down your luggage not you. Believe me it is time consuming. I spent alot of time on the phone trying to track my husbands luggage

I truly hope you have a wonderful vacation- regardless of your choice - consider the lesson we learned;)

I agree about the two bus idea. That would be a neat idea but I doubt they'd ever do it.

In only takes a few to mess up a great system and Mrs. Bee and her attitude is an example of that type. She will be one who will slow everyone else down to satisfy her own desires. Personally I am glad she isn't taking the car service and most of you know why.

so true. It woeks for HER and HER husband so to heck with everyone else. Personally, I think the drivers should pull up and unlock and let anyone with their luggage crawl around and pull it out themselves.

If it were just you and just 10 minutes I would agree, however it isn't.

If I use ME as its intended, with all the features including (IMHO the best part) luggage delivery then why should I have to wait for you if you choose to modify ME to fit your needs?

No, I am not in a hurry but I do want to get to the resort, check in and begin my vacation. So while I would not mind an extra 10 minutes.. its often more than 10 minutes and if I happen to be the last stop it can take an extra 30 minutes or more due to unloading checked bags that could have gone via ME.

So while its not a big deal to you at least try and see both sides and why it does bother some.

Hmmm....this thread is sounding rather nasty. :confused3

Unless DME was set out to where they REQUIRED you to use their luggage delivery service (which, as far as know, it has not been required), then I don't think anyone should fault anyone else for wanting to claim their bags or not. Yes, it can slow the system down, but Disney left that option out there.

For me...I often do not check luggage at all, bringing a roller bag on the plane, which does not fit inside the DME bus, and the driver has to check it below....so are you going to get on my case for having an airline size (but not bus size) carry on? I often go on 2 day visits to WDW and it doesn't make sense to check a bag for those trips (in case the bag was lost or delayed--more often due to airline than DME, I know).

If I do check bags, I have also experienced long delays at MCO baggage claim, and in that case, I would gladly use the delivery service.

While you are asking people to consider both sides of the issue...do so yourself, please.

Wow...that was rude and uncalled for. But hey...whatever floats your boat!:thumbsup2

I think the bag retrieval is awesome. DH was worried about everything Magical Express (we'd be stranded at the airport, we'd have no luggage etc). I didn't worry about our bags at all. We got to the resort, checked in, went to our room to drop the carry-ons and freshen a bit. Then we were off to the parks. By the time we got back, our bags were there. This was in Feb. 06--I am sure the service has only gotten better, you know...worked the kinks out. We loved it and will use it again.

Magical Express has been in existence for just a tad over two and a half years.
Magical Express transports between 5,000 and 10,000 passengers per day - so, let's take the average, 7,500.
7,500 passengers times 920 days (yes, I counted it out) = 6,900,000 passengers.
Of that number, HOW many "bad" stories have you heard?

As for one's carry-on luggage already being full with other things, keep in mind there's no guarantee the AIRLINE will get your luggage to your airport on your flight. Airlines misdirect over three million pieces of luggage a year, and permanently lose more than 250,000. Imagine if one or two of those are yours - and you didn't have enough room in your carry-on luggage for a quart-size bag of toiletries, a swimsuit, and PJs or a change of clothes?
Don't say it won't happen to you. It happened to my travel-experienced sibling - who SHOULD have known better.

Wow, first time I have been accused of being nasty.

I do see both sides, I said so in my post. I said 10 minutes dosen't bother me either but when 10 turns into 30 or more I think it would bother anyone.

I do realize there are situations when folks are going to want/need to bring luggage on DME rather than using the delivery feature. Late night arrivals with small kids come to mind.

What is so nasty about pointing out that by doing so you are missing out on one of the best features and also slowing the process down?

First, I said the THREAD was sounding nasty, not you. though, yes, I was using your quote to start my reply, so sorry about that.

But it is not right of the various posters who say that people who bring luggage on the DME bus, for whatever reason, are ruining the system. Like I said, they have never required anyone to use the delivery system.

If someone can tell me a better way to pack for a 2 day trip without having to use a roller bag that has to go under the bus, I would love to hear it....I just don't think that's enough time to risk misplaced luggage (thanks to the airlines, not DME). Even my "overnight" carryon with handles I think is too large for the bus overhead compartments, though I will certainly consider it next quick trip and try it out.

I do love the delivery service, and use it when I can...but it's just not always practical for all people, and I don't think it's right for people on this board to imply that other people are wrong in their choice not to use it, since it is not in the DME rules.

thanks!

If you carry on your luggage on your flight, you are left with one option, carry on your bag or as in your instance because of size it must go in the cargo hold of the bus. no argument there.

Since I have been on the Disboards this subject gets pounded regularly. Sometimes people type things that sound harsh and the walls go up. It will continue to be this way.

Some people learn the hard way ( aka - our trip to Tuscon) I would hope that someone could learn by our mistake and not have to spend alot of time shopping etc because their luggage has been delayed. I am glad that happened on my Tuscon trip and not our trip to the world. I also trully believe ME gets blamed if someones luggage is delayed regardless if it was the airline or ME.

I meant it to be rude. In my world if I want to to be the best for me, I make sure I don't hurt anyone else. In your case if you want it to be the best for you and your husband you should either rent a car or take a taxi. The bus involves 45 other people so it can't be what is best for you and your husband. It should be what is best for everyone involved. I guess you have never played any team sports. I think you have a lot of growing up to do.

and we were not the only ones.....we did this as well...I have on 75% of my flights had our luggage lost to or from a vacation and get tired of it..SO we decided that once we hit MCO, we would grab our own bags, take them with us....no, i wasnt worried about others..This was our vactaion and I needed / wanted all my items with me right away.....We were not the only ones..the under of the bus was FILLED with suitcases and My hubby LOADED and UNLOADED ours! did not ask for help /wouldnt let the driver get them....

This PAST trip we took 2 wks ago, we skipped the ME all together and used a limo as I couldnt deal with the ME last time( they waited to FILL the bus with as many people as they could...umm 1 hr later we were FINALLY pulling out to head to disney, lordy ) Then stopping at 5 resorts....forget it...so we likely wont use the ME Express again anyway, BUT if we do, we will have all 8+ bags and the stroller with us :thumbsup2

I dont understand if your bags get lost 75% of the time how that makes it ME's fault?

As my husband says there are people who will only think of themselves. But that doesnt make it wrong for wanting to get your own bags.

As another poster has pointed out, ME obviously has not kept anyone from getting their bags themselves. I myself liked using ME. I dont read a lot of bad reports about ME and I believe ME is quite successful. I for one appreciate the program.

Oh. I didn't realize that personal attacks on a Disney message board were things grown ups did. I'll be sure to make a note of it.

Anyway...I still plan on bringing my own bags on the bus. And I'm sure many others will do the same so what I do won't make much of a difference.

Let's bring up the fact that we all have a right to express our thoughts and feelings openly, and offer it as a thanks on Nov. 22! Obviously, there are two ways to ride the bus, and there are more than two outcomes from this process. I'm just thankful Disney doesn't charge anything for the service yet!

I had no idea that my tiny thread would cause three pages of replies! Wow for me!! Usually, I get a dozen replies and that's that. This has been good discussion, just keep it civil, guys, huh? Wonder what Walt would think about this...

Wow! You're quite possibly the friendliest person I've ever seen on a message board. You want your world to be the best for you and you make sure you don't hurt anyone else by... hurting somebody else!

I'll bet you wish people wouldn't shop at your grocery store so you wouldn't have to endure them writing checks to pay for food but I'll go out on a limb here and guess you're a check writer. Even if you're not I still think you would if you felt that it enriched your life in some insignificant way.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this message board is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Okay, so, I'm curious. How does picking up your own luggage at MCO prevent it from being lost by the airline?
My hubby LOADED and UNLOADED ours! did not ask for help /wouldnt let the driver get them....
Oh, now that's interesting. Did he at least accept direction from the driver, or did he just put your luggage in the compartment of his choice - even if it wasn't the one the driver was loading for your resort?

Oh, boy. I think you need to read Edd's response again:
In my world if I want to to be the best for me, I make sure I don't hurt anyone else.
IOW, while Edd is Edd's most important concern, he does his best NOT to hurt, i.e. inconvenience, others around him.

[a quote/paraphrase from the movie Billy Madison]

Well, that is YOUR opinion. I don't think they'll ever have a policy like that. People should be allowed to do as they choose with their own bags. Personally, I'm taking my own bags on the bus with me. And I am still using the bus. I don't want to pay an extra $100 or more to take a taxi. Big deal if it takes an extra few minutes for the driver to get my bags. I don't understand how everyone is in such a huge hurry than an extra 10 minutes is going to make a difference.
The thing is...you don't mind waiting a bit while others don't like hanging around. Sending their bags with DME and getting to their resort in a timely manner is what works for their family. Your needs are impacting their needs.

For me my carry-ons are already full with other things like cameras and video cameras. Also, the bad stories I've heard about ME were enough for me to want to get my own bags.

THere have not been very many 'bad stories' about DME...some yes, but a lot? I don't think so. No system is perfect, and DME is no different. The average time from deplaning to resort is 70 mins..unless there are a lot of people lugging their checked bags with them.

No, I understand that my ten minutes combined with other peoples can take time. But in the end...I am going to do what is best for myself and my husband. If it makes other people angry...so be it.
Now that is rude!! Why are your needs more important than the needs of others? You are relatively new to the DIS. For the most part, we tend to be a pretty considerate, compassionate bunch of people. We tend to not understand the whole 'it's all about me' attitude. So, you can expect to get somewhat feisty replys here.

and we were not the only ones.....we did this as well...I have on 75% of my flights had our luggage lost to or from a vacation and get tired of it..SO we decided that once we hit MCO, we would grab our own bags, take them with us....no, i wasnt worried about others..This was our vactaion and I needed / wanted all my items with me right away.....We were not the only ones..the under of the bus was FILLED with suitcases and My hubby LOADED and UNLOADED ours! did not ask for help /wouldnt let the driver get them....

Sorry to see that you have had misdirected luggage so often. But, that just isn't the case with DME. Their record for misdirecting things is actually very good. And as for waiting around to fill up the bus...you must have had an extremely rare situation. The 'norm' is no more that 25 mins...from first passenger to pulling away. And 5 stops?? Could you possibly stopped at the Swan or Dolphin then gone on to YC, then BC, then BW and lastly CBR? That's about the only time you'll have more than 3 stops...it's usually 4 on the rare instances that CBR is included, with S/D seldom included.

Oh. I didn't realize that personal attacks on a Disney message board were things grown ups did. I'll be sure to make a note of it.

There have been no personal attacks. Criticisms yes, attacks no. As I said before, those of us that have been here awhile do not like to hear of others with that 'all about me' attitude. And if you have 25 people, all thinking like you, then you have all added over 20 mins to my DME experience. And I have used it the way it was intended...sent my bags by themselves.

Wow! You're quite possibly the friendliest person I've ever seen on a message board. You want your world to be the best for you and you make sure you don't hurt anyone else by... hurting somebody else!

Ah, you may want to reread Edd's post. He didn't say anything about best for him at the expense of others. While Edd may have some views here that others don't always agree with, he seldom does anything that will adversly impact others.

People......do what you wish to do as far as DME is concerned. But, realize that when your actions impact others negatively, you are going to get some pretty passionate responses here. This is one of the nicest, most helpful, friendly boards on the DIS (without getting all pixie dust filled and magical!!!). Our members are incredibly knowledgable people. They have traveled extensively, both to WDW as well as many other areas. They know what they are talkiing about. If those who are new here want to disagree, fine. There is plenty of room for disagreement. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But be prepared for the comebacks. If you get rude or nasty, or entitled in your post, you are going to get some pretty interesting responses. We've been there, done that. And as an aside....we (myself and the other moderators) will not allow any name calling, meaness, rudeness or other 'less than magical' behaviour here. Please keep it civil or don't post!!!!
