hi all........along with this is pixie dust...:wizard: but they are closing MCO at noon friday 9/3 cuz of Frances. be advised depending how hard they get hit, it may not reopen for a bit..... when we flew home aug. 21, they were still working on cleaning up and repairing from Charley. i wish all a safe, happy trip....whenever you go!! :wave2:

Have a flight scheduled for 9/9, Thursday...
Any idea how long MCO usually closes after a hurricane?

Thanks!

Depends on the damage, so no one knows how long it will be closed. They will make every effort (being the vacation mecca) to get it open as soon as possible. They are now saying on the local news that the storm has slowed AGAIN and is not supposed to make landfall until Saturday at 2pm and should be in the Central Florida area ALL day Sunday not exiting the state until Monday at 2am...

As soon as this is over I am moving... Anyone have any suggestions :) Just kidding, I am just so nerve racked over this storm, the course changes every update (as to be expected) but the fact that it slowed down AGAIN and now we have a whole nother day to anticipate is killing me :)

How I wish this storm would just make up its mind! We're sitting here in the "command center" playing the "do we open on Saturday or do we close on Saturday ; do we open on Sunday or close on Sunday" game.

It's frustrating!!

Hi LibertyBelle!
Thanks for the info. You're welcomed to Texas! Here in the southern tip 'o Texas, we always get hurricane warnings, but nothing yet! People get so excited it's stupid! They have never actually seen one. We had Camille before I can remember, Alan in '80 and Gilbert which didn't bring anything but rain to my city.
I know it's frustrating not knowing what's going to happen, but I keep hoping it'll just fizzle out. I have been looking forward to this trip for 2 years, first time at WDW; wouldn't even know where to start undoing all this planning. But who am I to whine when people are fearing the worst? Forgive me!
BTW, what is Command Central? A specific spot, park, resort? How cool is that? It's great to know that people on these boards are "in the know"!

My best friend is originally from Ennis, Texas (outside Dallas) maybe I will need to call her for more info on Texas :)

Anyway, the first feeder bands are showing up on the Melbourne weather radar.

Now if only my neighbors would take this seriously and start cleaning their yard of loose items... again... OYE!

I just found out that they canceled the 9pm Cirque show tonight (found out on the boards here...looks like I am getting to go home from work early...) I work full time at MK and part time at Cirque... Hopefully the weather won't be too bad when we are trying to leave there (and the traffic...it took and hour and 45 minutes to go 12 miles yesterday).

Is this the worst hurricane season Florida has seen in a while. I don't recall hearing of one like this in the past. One hurricane hits and another is hot on its heals before the first can be cleaned up.

Jeez....

Hey LibertyBelle 12 miles in 60 minutes is my average commute every work day ! ! ! On really bad days it can take an 1 ½ hours. 45 minutes is a good day. Thank goodness for library book tapes.

Sorry didn’t mean to belittle your situation. Glad to hear you can head home earlier. Pixie dust to all in Frances path……. (bling……)

Cirque just called :) Get to go home around 9 (instead of midnight)...

I am taking the situation as it comes...no offense taken...It was 1 hour and 45 minutes for 12 miles..I live behind the Magic Kingdom and it is all back roads, no traffic lights and only locals, so 1 hour and 45 minutes to go 12 miles is INSANE!!!

I have lived in Florida since 1982 and this is a first for me.

We were in Tampa for Hurricane Elena (in the late 80's early 90's) it skirted the coast just a lot of rain and some wind nothing major.

My family was in Miami for Andrew (1992)

I was here in Orlando for Hurricane Erin (1995) which was classified a Hurricane but we have afternoon storms that are worse than she was. The Disney parks stayed open the day prior to the storm (she came through overnight) and they opened the next day, just a little late.

We had Hurricane Flloyd bearing down on us, but he tooka turn to the north at the last minute.

And now we have Charley and Frances (with Ivan in the wings...hopefully to play somewhere else).

So yes, it is uncommon for this area to get so much action. That is all since 1982 that I can recall. The weather reports here say this is the first time since the 50's that Florida has had back to back hurricanes hit the same area.

CRAZY!

Jeez....

According to something I read yesterday, Florida hasn't had two big hurricanes hit in one year since 1950.
