McDonald's is now advertising menu hacks/secret menu

I guess there used to be special requests. I specifically remember maybe a couple of years ago there were oddball items like a McChicken Biscuit and Chicken McGriddle using a normal McChicken patty. I don't know about calling it Land, Air, and Sea since chickens don't exactly fly, but I guess it's a catchy name. They can only be ordered through the app though. A combination double cheeseburger with Chicken McNuggets sounds kind of gross, but I've had a Kiwi Burger (fried egg and sliced red beets) at a McDonald's in New Zealand before.

I got that e-mail too. I don't get it. It doesn't even sound like they "make" the hacked item for you. They just sell you a "kit" of items so you can make it yourself. You order the Surf & Turf, but you get a Filet-o-Fish and a Double Cheeseburger. You can assemble it into one sandwich if you want... or not. What's the point?

And ha-ha about "only being able to order it through the app." (You can get a Filet-o-Fish and a Cheeseburger by any ordering method. And if you *do* go through the drive thru and ask for a surf-and-turf, do you think they're going to say "we have no idea what that is?")

Kind of missed that. It's certainly not going to look very good if one has to assemble it, and possibly put unclean hands on it. Cheese will stick to everything.

My favorite was really just an unadvertised ability to order a certain lunch special any time of day. Or even McDonald's where one might be able to order a complete meal even though often the cashier didn't know about it. I'd order on the app if the cashier refused to do it. The employees assembling the order only saw what the items were an not how it was ordered.

I kind of like not having to wash my hands when it comes wrapped in paper and I can use the paper. A clamshell makes it a little bit harder unless one uses a napkin. But I'm not sure about pulling all that stuff apart, although McDonald's does typically have antimicrobial wipes and hand sanitizer now.

This describes many a Chinese-American restaurant, assuming you can speak Cantonese or Mandarin.

When I think McDonalds "Secret Menu", I think of making a McDouble "like a Mac" or something to that effect.

These "hacks" aren't a secret menu, and I suppose that they are hacks, but overall it just seems like a clever way to sell more stuff.

This is no different, IMO, than any of the "special meals" (e.g. BTS, etc.) where they just took what they were already selling and slapped them together with a marketing campaign.

While I'm on the subject, went to Burger King the other day to get a fish sandwich (I know strange but I like them) and when we went through the drive through the first thing they said was they had no hamburgers. Hunh? It's in their name. Then we asked if they had the fish and they said no. So what they did have is beyond me but we drove on to Zaxbys.

I don't get it either when they use frozen patties that are already prepared by a supplier. I'd understand fresh ground beef shortages. They used to advertise "fresh Quarter Pounders" around here, and it was actually quite noticeable.

This is lame. I'm not sure if this was Mayor McCheese's decision, but never trust a man with a hamburger for a head to come up with sound ideas.

Not to mention, you are getting two separate items instead of that item on the menu.

I know other places have real "secret" items, like In n Out Burger.

I kind of disagree here. Those special meals are just like an additional combo meal option (normal menu items combined for ordering convenience). You get the things that are advertised. If they advertised a surf+turf combo (with a filet-o-fish and a cheeseburger) then I think THAT would be the same.

McD's is advertising a new menu item (sure, it's a recombination of stuff they already use, but an assembly that's not on the regular menu). For example the "surf and turf burger." But they're just delivering 2 regular menu items and you have to build it yourself. If they assembled it and delivered it as a surf+turf burger, that'd be one thing... but this is just silly.

But, really, it's no skin off my nose. I wouldn't order any of these combinations anyway.
